  1. Hi, I'm a PhD1 student at Queen's. Hopefully you will hear soon!

  2. Even though I know results won't be out for a few more days, I'm starting to get twitchy. Anyone else?

    SSHRC 2010

NSERC results are typically released about a month before SSHRC results. I would think we still have some waiting to do, sadly... On the plus side, OGS results are supposed to be out later this week!
  4. ^^ once you make it to the A level for SSHRC, your chances are about 50-50. If you're an A level Master's student, your chances are about 90%.
  5. It's 30-40 minutes by bus (although if I miss a bus I might have to wait over an hour for the next one), then 2 hours by train, then 10-15 minutes by cab. I go down and come back on Mondays (leave the house just before 8AM, get home around 11PM). I also go down on Wednesdays, stay overnight at a B&B and come home Thursday night. It's tiring, but doable. Next year I'll be studying for my comps and am hoping to work mostly from home, though I'll still need to go in for my TAship.
  6. I would pay them off as soon as possible. I hate being in debt!
  7. It really depends on how serious your relationship is, and how much you value being together (in a literal sense - because of course you can be emotionally together many miles from each other!). For me, the most important thing was that I'd be living with my husband (who is currently working). This means I commute upwards of 6 hours a day (which sounds worse than it is, I think), but for me it's worth it. And thankfully, my final course is Thursday and my commuting will be mostly over!
  8. I highly doubt they would sue you. People drop out of grad school all the time.

    I admire your optimism.

Scholarships are not taxed, but you do need to report them.
  11. I'm expecting the results to be out sometime around the 18th - they typically seem to come out a few days late.

From the SSHRC website (though perhaps this only applies to MA students?): Multidisciplinary committees evaluate applicants based on: Academic Excellence Weighting: 60% Academic excellence—as demonstrated by academic transcripts, awards and distinctions.Research Potential Weighting: 30% Quality of analytical skills, ability to think critically, ability to apply skills and knowledge, judgement, originality, initiative and autonomy, determination, and ability to complete projects within an appropriate period of time—as demonstrated in the description of the degree program and by work experience, research contributions, letters of appraisal and, if applicable, the departmental appraisal. Communication Skills Weighting: 10% As demonstrated in the description of the degree program and, if relevant, by work experience, community involvement and other extracurricular activities, as well as by letters of appraisal, the quality of presentation of the application and, if applicable, the departmental appraisal.

I'm going to say April 30.
  14. McGill is a great school and you really can't go wrong living in Montreal. Better brush up on your French, though!

About 7 more weeks of waiting to go...

I'm on the A list as well - waiting really is torture!
  17. In my department, anything lower than a B+ will result in you being kicked out of the program... grades can also affect your ability to apply for various fellowships/grants.
  18. I won't have any debt upon completion of my degree. I wouldn't have gone to grad school if my funding didn't cover tuition, commuting costs, living expenses, etc.
  19. I have a BA and MA in Interdisciplinary Studies and am currently a PhD1 student in Sociology. I had never taken a Soc course before September - it's been a steep learning curve, but if you're smart and hardworking it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
