  1. And when you have job offers well before graduation you'll be glad you got started right away. You can hike anytime.
  2. Hmmm well prepare as if it is that way if you're right you'll be at your best. If it turns out it isn't a date then perhaps you'll catch someone else's eye while out and will soon have one.
  3. Since it is a holiday weekend for those of us in the US does it count as doing something for the holiday if I went out last night? I'm trying to force myself to be more social and spending holiday weekends solely in my new home would be counter productive. And I don't mean I went and got takeout or ran errands lol. I actually went to a social event in an unfamiliar part of town.
  4. A year ago I was begging for LORs, and redoing my SOP for the millionth time after some great advice from a grad school fair. I also developed a back up plan in case I didn't get in again. It is still very weird to actually be in a program and all the hassles that have popped up since have been frustrating.
  5. And now that I've burnt a hole in my wallet online shopping I am way too amped to sleep. The good news is my place should be half furnished by next week. I've finished watching Doogie Howser and am now on to Wings. That'll make me tired right?
  6. In most cases I would agree with this, but this guy was telling me how this had been his career for many years and he'd soon retire. Perhaps he's been slowing down a bit. Perhaps it is not, but it was definitely a factor in my delivery experience. His being overweight certainly doesn't make him a bad person, just more of an indication that his line of work may no longer be suitable.
  7. My stuff finally arrived and the delivery guy was so overweight and in poor shape he was struggling to lift them out of his van all while in danger of losing his pants. I was afraid he'd keel over, flash me, or both so I brought them into the house myself. And how heavy were these boxes? The heaviest was 15lbs. Seriously. *sigh*
  8. @Neist We're all stumbling about I think. The other day I nearly had a meltdown in my lab class because the structure is "work in groups and talk as loud as you want while doing so" instead of shut up and listen to the instructor teach you things. I got absolutely nothing done and will now have to work harder to complete my assignment before class so I can use class time for follow up questions. And apparently I was the weirdo because everyone else was happily working loudly in groups or farting around loudly in groups.
  9. I second fuzzy's suggestions. I just started my program, am in a completely new place, have no friends here, and am a decade older than most of my classmates. So far I volunteered for a food festival which was fun and I met some interesting people. Next I'll be volunteering at an art show and a film festival. I have signed up for several meetup groups and look forward to attending events as soon as something fits my schedule and budget. I opted for groups aimed at people 30+ and/or singles since they seemed less cliqueish.
  10. Then I'd have to purchase a smartphone and a piece of my soul would die. The expense, all of the information that is stored in them, how stupid I think people look walking around glued to them, their inability to fit into any of my date night clutches...... Just when I think I've seen everything something new and amazing appears. This thing is perfect! I'd just need to figure out where to put it so its a bit more discreet and I doubt the landlord would even care. Hmmmm my list of things that require a drill or hammer is getting long and I still haven't found a hunky handyman. Don't men realize the value of such a service? All that lemonade in my fridge isn't going to drink itself you know. Come on men! Exploit yourselves for my viewing pleasure!
  11. I think my new car has one built in or its one of those add on things I can get. This could work, but then if I were a criminal wouldn't I search the car for a hide-a-key hoping to find one for the car, but still be happy to see one for the house instead? Drink some tea, being sick is awful.
  12. I thought about this, but most likely my office keys would be locked in wherever I locked my house key. At that point I'd have to bother campus police to get into the office and if I've also locked my student ID with my house key and office keys they won't help me lol. My landlord lives/works a half hour away so that isn't ideal. I'm not seeing friends or a significant other in the near future so I guess I'll just keep carrying both sets of keys around.
  13. First week of classes over, thank heavens. The pros: My stuff arrives on Monday! Yippy! I didn't ship anything fragile, but I still hope nothing is broken. I've decided on a bed, bedding, and towels I just need to hit submit on the payment page and I'll be able to finally get off the floor. I found an eco friendly carpet cleaner. I only dislike one of my classes, when I expected to dislike at least 2. I pitched a few ideas to my adviser in order to move my research training forward sooner rather than later and while there wasn't a ton of enthusiasm, none were vetoed either. The cons: My cohortmates are more annoying now. I've gotten a rash and can't figure out from what. I've started to supplement the absurd number of hours spent talking to myself by watching old tv shows instead. Currently I'm watching Doogie Howser and have no idea what to watch next. My head is spinning over all of the washer and dryer options available and I'm sick of the laundromat. And I have no one to give a spare key to and refuse to just "hide" it outside somewhere. That's kind of sad right?
  14. I find with Craigslist its always something weird with the buying experience.....pervy seller, items that are really broken or dirty, etc. Even renting apartments or job hunting on there has been hit or miss. LOL! I usually just find some paper towels so I can take something to go. Now that I'm eating healthier I've learned to be pickier about what I take to go.
  15. So I'm finally furniture shopping and am I the only one who didn't know mattresses and bedframes had weight limits?! Some of them are kind of low its a wonder 2 people don't regularly collapse mid sleep. Hell I've put on weight, even I could collapse by myself. I found a bedframe that holds 1200 lbs so that should be plenty. Or paid for gas with nothing but change.....or gone to any relatives home for a free meal with tupperware in hand......or buying anything off craigslist and realizing what a bad idea that was.
  16. The undergrads seriously crack me up. The swarms on the bus, the inability to read a campus map and find the building they need, and not realizing they need to leave early and allow extra time to get lost or deal with the swarm. I am far from perfect, but I was much more prepared as an undergrad.
  17. This is exactly why I didn't subscribe to Prime. It doesn't take absurdly long to get what I ordered without it and knowing there is an extra delay or two makes me think twice before hitting submit payment. It wouldn't surprise me if the workers there were unhappy. Companies that large tend to set up in areas where jobs are needed so the people who work there feel like they have to suck it up or go back to being unemployed.
  18. Anyone else completely amazed by all of the stuff you can find on Amazon? I mean really....how can they stock so many things?! I've found textbooks, bedding, towels.....and what else do I need? Oh I wanted a scale. And I need some tupperware. Hmmm I could order more bakeware....there must be Amazon support groups lol.
  19. Hehehe I'm glad you had a better experience. Yes you should, it would be the right thing to do. Something is going on with the world of ordering things because I had a frustrating time with Barnes and Noble. They took my money and then said they didn't have the book I ordered in stock and yet it was listed as in stock on their website. I demanded a refund and surprise surprise the book showed up the next day. I know right? Shouldn't it be more amazing? Hmmm maybe I took the flat route and there is also a hilly one? I'll have to study the map some more.
  20. Soooo.....I just drove across the country and you know what? It's pretty flat. And now I'm slightly disappointed.
  21. Having toolboxes and knowing how to use all kinds of tools is something I require of my future husband lol. Oh! And I was thinking more about my lighting issue and I realized part of what bugs me is I now have a back door. Who knew rentals could have those? So my paranoid self is thinking what if someone came in that way and I didn't hear them and couldn't see them?! Now I need a bell, like one of those loud cowbells, to hang on the doorknob lol. I think I'm just spending too much time in my new home and it's making me crazy lol.
  22. And after a sucky week I've decided the best remedy would be a shower with my new rainfall shower head that I convinced myself I must have and could totally self install. After 20 minutes in my shower I've discovered that the old shower head requires a wrench to be fully unscrewed. Since when does a girls guide to modern life require a wrench? Screwdrivers sure. Do I have a wrench? Nope. Am I going to the store right now? Nope. Am I getting my rainfall shower? Double nope. *sigh* there's ice cream in the freezer.....
  23. Yikes that is a lot of triggers. Hopefully you're feeling a little better now and the cat is happily napping somewhere. Could it be something you're wearing....laundry detergent, soap, lotion, etc? Regardless if there is a natural foods store nearby they usually stock several options for dealing with bugs and bug bites. Trial and error
  24. @sjoh197 Good lord how can a cat sleep that deeply?! And you'll be ok soon right? I'm guess there are things you do to normalize after a panic attack.
