  1. @‌manutdftw I got 158q/154v...I tried studying for a GRE retake but I just couldn't find the time due to work, other commitments. I figured I hit my peak. But I am going to apply and see what happens! I just do not feel like taking them again for any reason whatsoever. I am going to solely concentrate on my essays and see if that helps! Considering we have work experience, we are able to speak more to that in the essays. Not everyone is going to perform well at standardized tests. I plan to address my GRE scores in the optional essays...on there we can mention our lower GRE scores. I, for example, have to do a lot of writing and documenting at my work. So I can mention those things to address my lower GRE verbal score. p.s. Good luck to us on Sunday against City!
  2. Does anyone have some experience with the University of Maryland MPP program? Is there a quant focus to it? How does it compare to George Washington or Georgetown? It seems like a lot of the students who join the program are pretty fresh out of undergrad with very limited work experience.
  3. Before applying, and if you are sure you want to attend the program, is it important to attend the fall visitation events that the school hosts? Trying to free up my schedule in Nov/Dec for these events.
  4. I am now thinking of applying to about ~5 schools at the most. I am considering taking out Columbia SIPA and NYU Wagner from my list because I am from the southeast and the thought of living in NYC is terrifying as hell
  5. Hi Kaneisha, I am considering volunteering abroad next year (after I send applications). Is this something I can mention in my applications that I will be doing?
  6. Wow thanks Kaneisha, you are a big help. I forgot about these threads I made so thanks for bumping them! I beat you to it and helping a non-profit out right now!
  7. I don't mean to be rude. You sort of lost me at your undergrad coursework. Accounting and Finance and then Philosophy and then Mathematics and Physics? What? and Why? Can you elaborate?
  8. Why are there so few quality MPP/MPA programs in the southeast? Are there any programs similar to an MPP/MPA that I could take a look at in the southeast?
  9. Got a 158Q/154V. Performed under what I expected and want to know how much the GRE score is taken into consideration. I was considering retaking but I have a lot of things going on and things would just be hectic for me.
  10. Thanks Westy! Hope it goes well for you too. When do you plan on retaking it? I definitely wasn't too sure about the schools I wanted to send my score too and I figured it would be too pre-mature of me to send scores before I make a firm list. I will definitely be able to do that before my second retake. I have been looking at available dates and it seems the 3rd-4th week of September is the best time I will be able to take it (which falls on a Saturday).
  11. I scored a bit under what I expected. 158Q/154V. Should I retake this given my stats (below)? I am looking at MPP programs for Fall 2016 admit. If you have any suggestions for programs for me, feel free to shout them out. My goal would be to work in economic development for an organization such as the World Bank, UN, etc. leveraging my private sector work experience to the public/ngo sector. My GPA is 3.47 in finance and accounting and I have 3 years of work experience in the private sector (consulting and auditing), 4 years by the time I admit next year. I will hopefully have 3 good LORs (1 professor, 2 managers). And I will try to formulate a good statement of purpose. I have some community service involvement (tutoring). Also I didn't use the "score select" feature to pick my universities on this exam. Should I have done this? Can I send these scores (I guess for a certain fee) to the schools I choose? I used the following GRE material: Magoosh (did all the questions) Manhattan 5lb book (did most of the questions) 2 Manhattan strategy guides (number properties and text completion) Took 5 manhattan practice tests to really get familiar with the test and 1 powerprep test
  12. Hey there, I took my 3rd manhattan prep test. It was interesting in that I got 160Q/154V. I had to pause it a few times because of external distractions (noise, ugh). Around question 16 or so, I looked at the timer and it said I only have 4 minutes and this is where I started getting nervous, so nervous that when I was looking at the medium passage, I couldn't absorb anything from it out of sheer nervousness of not being able to finish so I just guessed on my last 3-4. I think if I do a better job of pacing myself in Verbal, I should be better off. One thing that definitely helps me is to write a few of the points from the passages down. I will use a lot of abbreviation if I have to. Ex. "George Washington was the first president of the United States" - I will write on my notes: GW -> 1st Pres. of US. I feel I do better if I write some brief notes out and it helps me absorb things better. Quantitative, I had the same situation as you. I looked at the questions I missed afterwards and I was able to solve a lot of them with more time and less time stress. They are superficially tough when you got the timer going there. But I did manage to get those 4 or so additional questions right which led me up to 160, part of that has to do with pacing correctly so I have enough time to accurately work out questions about 75% of the way in.. I'll take another practice test later today and see what happens.
  13. I guess my best option is to take a online course in principles in economics, thanks I took 3 other economics courses (Econ Policy course, Intermediate Macro, Labor Economics) and I got 2 A's and 1 B. I am also currently enrolled as a non-degree graduate student at my local university where I am taking an international economics graduate course. Some additional info - I graduated in 2011 with a 3.47 GPA but with over 164 credit hours of coursework.. my undergrad is in Finance and Accounting. I have a basic calc, stats, class covered.
  14. Chocolatecheesecake, by Micreconomics, do you mean principles in microeconomics? Should I have that course done before I send in applications? I took an AP course in microeconomics which I received a 3 in, so I got credit for it. But I took intermediate micro in college and I got a C+. This is one of the parts of my application I am most concerned with.
  15. We are doing exactly the same on the Quantitative section. Getting those 4 questions right on the second section is what I need to concentrate on this week. I am going to take my 3rd Manhattan Prep test (4th overall including ETS Powerprep Test 1) in the afternoon today. Will update. I think the practice itself is great and will help a lot for the real thing Btw did you take the ETS powerprep tests? I got a 160 on the Quantitative section on it. But It went down to 155-157 on the Manhattan prep tests.
  16. Hi Westy, do we choose the schools to send our GRE scores too on the day of the test? What if we haven't decided completely on that yet? I still need to research and narrow down 5-6 schools in my program and I figured I would do it after I take the GREs.
  17. Thanks for your message - At the moment, I just wanted to get the GREs over with so I can concentrate on other things. I still want to take the GRE on August 1st but if my score happens to be unsatisfactory, I would need to take it again in September. Can you recommend a study approach for a bump up into the 160s if you can?
  18. I am on the same boat too. I don't know what else I can do.
  19. Hi, manhattan prep has 6 tests. To access those tests, you need a code which can be found in the back of any of the 8 strategy guides they have . they cost less than 20 bucks so just buy a book or two in an area that you are in weak in, and you will be able to get the code to access the free tests.
  20. 1) I have been on this since May. 2) I was hoping for 155+ but of course I want the highest score possible. Reach for the stars, land on the moon? 3) Should I consider this?
  21. ETS Powerprep Test 1 -> 160Q/152V Manhattan Prep Test 1 -> 157Q/158V Manhattan Prep Test 2 -> 155Q/158V I have pretty much finished the Manhattan 5lb book, Magoosh, and bought 2 Manhattan Prep strategy guides. I am not sure what to do now and I need to remain motivated! The second quant section in the Manhattan Prep tests were ridiculously tough, a lot of "devilish" questions showed up and this is where I got a lot more wrong and my score started suffering. Any strategies to do better on these? Is the manhattan prep Quant accurate to what I will see on the GRE? I am also worried regarding my verbal on what I saw on the ETS powerprep test.
  22. Appreciate the advice Kaneisha. Regarding the time frame for when I should take the course, would I need to complete it before I send in my applications? Or if I state that I am committed to doing it on my application, I would be fine? I also took a powerprep test and made a 160Q/152V. I have a 3.47 GPA. I don't know how to feel about that. Thanks again
  23. Thanks for your response. All of the above classes are B and up except intermediate micro. I was worried about a few things 1) Principles in Microeconomics class was AP credit in high school and I made a 3. I am not sure if that's high enough. And I was worried it might not be accepted by these schools. 2) Intermediate Micro...I made a C+ in this class. 3) It's been more than 5 years since I have taken all these classes. Hence why I wanted to know if I might have to retake any of these classes *before* applying to schools as they might affect my chances of getting into the schools (?).
  24. I attended undergrad between 2007-2011. Here are the pre-reqs I have taken: Business Calculus (2007) Statistics (2008) Principles in Microeconomics (AP credit in high school) Principles in Macroeconomics (2008) Intermediate Micro (2008...C+ Grade unfortunately :/ ) Intermediate Macro (2008) Which would I have to re-take before applying for MPP programs this fall? And which should I take?
