  1. Thorongil I understand your approach for questions coming from a philosophy background myself. The difference is the approach: the idea or the history. If your interest is more in the development and evolution as it relates to specific events then history is your gig and btpp explained the necessity of refining your interest area. On the other hand if you really just want to focus on the ideas, you may be able to move into a Comp. Lit program, though the "history of ideas" has essentially become a subfield of intellectual history as a whole. I recommend McMahon & Moyn's Rethinking Modern European Intellectual History. Its focus is Modern Europe but its themes can be applied to the field as a whole. @histrybuff Harvard has a pretty stacked transatlantic dept, I would just start with a list of solid departments (search on google) and read bios. Or look at the papers that you have been reading on the topics and see if their department matches your interests.

    History Blogs

I know this is about blogs, but I would also check out some of the university podcasts and follow their twitter feeds. Most post links to stuff. On a side note (maybe this should be in a different feed?) I am looking to have access to databases/periodicals, but my library privileges have ended...and I don't really want to buy access. Advice?

    Program Insight

Hi, So my undergrad was a double major in philosophy and French with a modern French/ German History concentration. My interests fall into cultural & intellectual history, but I have not settled on Europe as my area of focus. I am interested in Japan and Korea post-WWII, specifically the exchange between East and West political/social ideologies but I don't have the academic foundation in the east. So I am looking at some masters programs with the intention to find this grounding. At the same time I don't know if I should focus on Europe now and build my concentration in the east as I go through the PhD program, or if I really need this foundation before applying to the PhD track. So I have some questions. 1. Is a Master's program worth it in light of costs and time? 2. If not, how do I explain these interests to POIs sans the academic foundation and at the same time avoid sounding "wishy-washy" ? Also I am looking for some more information on the Intellectual History MLitt program at St. Andrews and the History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz. I have looked on both of the websites, but I was wondering how these programs are viewed upon completion.
  4. Hi everyone, I am applying to programs with strong intellectual history support. My background is in philosophy with a Modern French/German history concentration, but I am actually trying to expand further east (which is proving difficult with a lack of academic foundation in these areas) I am still narrowing down schools, so if you have suggestions...HELP...is always appreciated. Perhaps pursuing an MA to get a stronger footing. That being said I should probably list the programs I have interest in (in no particular order and some tentatively as I talk with professors): Harvard, Yale, UNC, Johns Hopkins, UChicago, UMich Ann Arbor, UCLA, Berkely, ENS Lyon I have also found the Int. History MLitt program at St. Andrews and the History of Consciousness program at UCSC interesting...any thoughts on these programs?
