Latin American Studies MA- Fall 2015
twentysix replied to twentysix's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
Cool. What is your focus and what is your background? -
Added my offers.

I too am interested in this. I need to read 1500-1600s Spanish documents. The school I am likely going to attend offers 1000-1500 Latin paleography, but I do not read Latin... Is this (Colonial Spanish paleography) the type of thing that is offered as a summer workshop?

Wow, your profile photo is offensive.

I see 2 people were accepted to UNM and 2 to tulane and 2 to stanford. Where are those people at? -
Yeah its like a 2,000 mile drive for me and I will only be living there for sure for 4 quarters, 7 quarters tops. Furnished is better for me... and at the university I am at currently the furnished units can have furniture removed upon request, hopefully UCSD is the same way.

Even the university housing is 5 miles from campus, lol. I wouldn't expect to live very close to UCLA. I'm likely going to be living in Playa del Rey if I accept which is a 20 minute drive or a 1hr 20 minute bus ride.

I already asked, there isn't one. I made my own visitation day, the day after UCLA's open house. -

Ok. I didn't get a follow up email either. At my university, spring break is only for students. All university offices continue to function. -
I think the issue is we have different application needs. I am applying with a non-student partner and we will consume the entire apartment, there will not be any roommates. I don't care about the community in the building so much as I care about being able to walk to class. My department even awarded me priority housing (for a 2br) as part of my negotiation. I'm looking at a ridiculous commute at UCLA, so being on campus at UCSD could be a big selling point for me. Ofc depending on how the open houses go at both schools.

I will possibly be attending UCLA. I'm deciding between UCLA and UCSD for Latin American Studies (history track). Congrats on all your acceptances!

Did the program director call you today Randomgal? He did not contact me, even though I scheduled today for him to call. -

Thanks for the heads up, the email went to my junk mail. Did you receive the fellowship? I did not get it out of the first 2 rounds, 1 round remains. However, they are keen on offering me a research assistantship (tuition/fees/salary) if I do not get it in the final round (which I probably won't). -

I was never made aware of this while talking to UCSD housing and I have already submitted housing applications. That will suck if it turns out to be true.

Is there private parking around UCLA which I can buy monthly?

Anyone doing anything interesting for Spring Break? I'm on my way to Panamá for about a week. I hope to get in some good snorkeling and kayaking time in the ocean and lake Gatun and I also plan on visiting the canal and exploring the city and its ruins. I'm excited to get to use my Spanish a little more in another real world setting. -

I'm deciding between UCSD and UCLA. I'd like to live in Rita-Atkinson if I can get in.

26. I went part time for a big portion of my undergrad and I am graduating with 2 degrees (BA and BS). I'd like to take a year off between MA and PhD, so I will be 28-29 going into my PhD.

Hey everyone, I'm seriously considering UCLA. If I take UCLA's offer I will be living on the beach in Playa del Rey, which will be awesome! How realistic is it to take the bus from Playa to UCLA? I know there is a bus stop on Trolley Way about 600 feet from the place I would live. Does anyone know about how long it would take to make that trip twice a day? I will have a car, but I have been told that without a TA position (I will be on fellowship) getting a parking pass is nearly impossible.

What surprised you the most going through this whole process?
twentysix replied to budgie's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I was surprised most that I received acceptances. I was told that I wouldn't get in to any of the schools I chose to apply too by faculty at my current school (though one faculty member was supportive). I guess they didn't realize the amount of time I put into hand selecting the programs, revising my statement of purpose, etc... -

Awesome! I love Texas, Tex-Mex and Texas BBQ; I just hate Texas politics. I Would have loved to live in Austin. -

How did it go? On an unrelated note, I was just rejected from Tulane. So my application period is complete!
