  1. Yeah she had told me that there was a very slim chance of her taking students but still told me to apply in case she changed her mind. So I applied knowing it was a long shot, but such is life .
  2. I only took the GRE once, I got a 1280 which I think is a decent score (though now that I read this thread I feel otherwise). My plan was to take it again if I got under a 1300, but it was 20 points and I just don't have the money. I also knew that other aspects of my application were really compelling so it would hopefully make my scores not as important. I have not taken the Psych GRE, though one school requires it so I might take it in April even though they have already invited me out to interview. My undergrad does require the Major Field Test and I scored in the 97th percentile for that so I sent that off to schools in hopes of avoiding the subject test haha.
  3. I would suggest trying to call the secretary to sort out the issue and explaining the situation to try and clear any confusion. This happened to me, not the same situation but a missing transcript was involved, and they didn't update my status to having the transcript for about a month and a half after I had verified they had finally received it. I feel like if it was going to hurt your chances they would be asking you where your transcript was, so I suggest just staying calm and remembering to breathe. It will all work out for you
  4. Personally, I didn't plan on posting any grad school updates...until my number 1 program, that I applied to for the sake of applying and never thought I would even get a second glance from, wanted an interview and then suddenly it was on facebook. My excitement just got the best of me. But none of my friends are applying to the same schools as me and I have only actually mentioned the name of one school on there. I don't think it is bragging unless done intentionally to try and rub it in. Instead, I like to view it as simply sharing my excitement with my friends
  5. No, I have only heard from Bette. But I only applied to work with her because our interests overlap so much since I have been working under a former grad student of hers and I have been an author on a few things with her. Unfortunately she did not give any indication on when their decisions will be made.
  6. Not sure who else applied to UIC, but Dr. Bottoms told my advisor that since she is moving into administration she, sadly, has just decided that she will not be able to take on a grad student this year. So not a technical rejection yet, but at least I know to not obsess over finding out anymore and can focus on the other schools!
  7. Yeah I have one pants suit that I jokingly refer to as my "power suit" which I will wear in NYC, then I have a skirt suit that is my favorite, and then I have a pair of pants I can put with the skirt jacket as well. I also have quite a few nice shirts that I can wear with any of my suits. I had not even thought about bringing flats...now I might have to go and look for some. I am pretty short so I either have to wear heels or hem my pants everytime I buy them, so my selection of flatss = 0 haha.
  8. For the actual interviews I have a couple of suits that I use for conference presentations, so I figured I would pull those out. And then if the suit is too much, I can just take off the jacket and have a nice shirt with dress pants/skirt. But I am in a bit of a bind because I will, literally, be going from school to school for a week straight so I have to strategically pack enough clothes in a small carry on and hope they don't wrinkle. What are you planning on wearing for the actual interviews?
  9. I have not gone on any interviews yet, though I have three coming up, so I completely understand your worries. What LaurenA said is exactly what my research advisor told me to do. So I would take her advice
  10. My only true phone interview (the other calls were them just inviting me to interview) lasted about 30 minutes. First I was asked about my research, who I thought I was a good fit for (luckily I did not answer the first time they called because it ended up being a professor I had not done much research on beforehand). Then I asked a couple of questions about her research. Then, and this one caught me off guard so be prepared, she asked me how I would expand upon her research and my other poi options' research (new directions, additional variables, etc.). After that awkward five minutes she asked if I had any further questions about the program or the process. The next time I heard from her I was accepted and invited to visit. So basic advice: keep a note sheet or something around that has information about the research at the university, ideas of where you will fit, and most importantly, the names of the faculty. If you have that information and stay calm you should do just fine! Good luck!!
  11. Too bad, I burn easily anyway haha. But it is probably good because I have three interviews that weekend already.
  12. Did anyone else apply to work with Spellman at UVA? I applied knowing it was a long shot but might as well try. Also, anyone heard from Tufts, UIC, or UCI?
  13. Congrats!! It is a great feeling! I got my first admittance a week or so ago and I like knowing that if nothing else I have that one school. As for what I am doing other than obsessing over the results list...baking cookies, listening to music, and grading statistics homework...Oh boy! haha
  14. If I end up not liking anything or not receiving enough money, I would probably stay in Indiana (yeah midwesterners are like that, though none of the schools I applied to are in the midwest haha) and either apply for jobs as a victim advocate for the county courts or work on my push ups and join the police as they have been nagging me to do since my internship. But I would much rather have grad school...though having a taser would be fun
  15. There are a couple schools that I have applied to and have interviews with that are not really bustling cities, so if I do end up at either of those we have had to face the realization that he would have to compute a couple hours or we would have to live separately and just see each other on weekends or something, which would not be fun. Luckily if I get accepted to either of my top schools, they are in cities. Call me an optimistic, but I am a firm believer that it will all work out in the end!
  16. So this got me curious to google my name (my first name is different spelling so nothing has ever shown up before) and I am happy to say that the first three pages just contained my publications, academic announcements, awards, presentations, and research. I also found out that I was thanked in a publication that I was not an author on or anything. My facebook is on the most private setting so that didn't even show up. Then after page three I guess there is some softball player in Michigan that is awesome, so I guess that wouldn't be too bad either haha. Essentially, please Google me schools
  17. Originally my fiance and I were going to both apply for schools, or at least he was going to apply to the same schools I am, as my field is smaller and more specialized. But now he has decided to enter the work force and is being amazing and just planning on moving wherever I get accepted. We knew the last thing we wanted was to be separated, especially since we are getting married in July and we have done the whole long distance thing before. Luckily he is in engineering and hopefully should have some good job opportunities.
  18. I think if I found out that that happend at one of the schools I applied to...well I would be very angry, upset, and jealous to say the least. Do I believe it happens? Absolutely, it is, as socog3 put it, like a job you can get by knowing the right people. I know that some people in my undergrad program started trying to scout potential schools and advisors awhile ago in hopes of impressing them so much their desicion would be made before even applying. Granted, not sure it happened for those people. But really it is also like if you try to get a summer research position at a favored university in hopes that if they know who you are you have a better chance. Either way I guess it is all part of the game.
  19. I actually have followed the rule that unless I am at my computer or near my notes, if some unknown number calls me, I let it go directly to voicemail. This has happened to me 4 times and each time the professor just asked that I call them back. None of them seemed to mind at all and it gave me a chance to get my head on straight and pull out my information for the program
  20. Well man, after reading all of these I am now worried for myself because I have seen the other applicants. All of you are amazing! Okay, so after discovering this site, especially the results list, I think this is a good thread haha. I am applying to 8 PhD programs for Psychology and Law. Here it goes... -3.83 overall GPA, 3.96 Major GPA -Have been conducting research with two different labs for about 2 years. -I have 2 publications in peer reviewed journals -I have 7 manuscripts in preparation, including my senior thesis which I received a $5000 grant to conduct the research -I was just recently invited to be an author on an Encyclopedia article because of my thesis -One line of research that I am involved with has been in the national news -My lab won a Research award last year for our poster presentation -This year I am an author on 5 studies at AP-LS, 3 of which I am the presenter, and one of those is a talk on my thesis -Three great LORs (I hope, I got to read one which made me cry so here is to hoping the other two were good) -I have been the lab manager for one of the professors for a year and a half now -I had an incredibly eye opening internship with the local police department -My GRE scores were decent haha -I am the TA for the statistics course this year -That is it haha, essentially I am gunning on shoving my massive amounts of research down their throats So that was hard, but it felt kind of nice. Now I just have to stop checking the results page.
  21. I have applied to several social psychology programs, though I am not in the same boat as everyone else it seems haha. My interests are in the intersection of law and psychology, particularly in juror decision making and extra-legal factors within the court system, with some interrogation thrown in there . I have applied to UTEP (accepted), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Interview coming up!), John Jay (interview the day before UNL), Wyoming (interview the day after UNL), UC-Irvine, WUSTL, UVA, and UIC (I have slowly started to lose hope in those last four from looking at the results page though). Also, even though most of you talked about attending/wanting to attend the SPSP conference, is anyone going to the AP-LS conference in Vancouver??
  22. Hey! I just commented on your other thread, I am new here (this sight might be the death of me haha) so working my way around So for UTEP I was accepted about a week ago and they are having me come out March 5th (roughly they are not certain). I want to work with (in no particular order) Hosch, Meissner, and Eno Louden. I guess if I go there Eno Louden will be my advisor for the first year. As for Wyoming, they have just invited me out for an interview that is Feb. 21-23. As for who I would like to work with there (again in no particular order), it would be either (or both!) Culhane and Nunez. Who do you want to work with at those schools?
  23. I applied to 8 programs for a Ph.D. in Psychology and Law (title changes depending on the program). So far I have been accepted to University of Texas El Paso's legal psych program and I have interviews in two weeks (yes they are in a row and I will be gone for a week straight!) at John Jay, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and University of Wyoming. I also applied to University of California-Irvine, WUSTL, University of Illinois-Chicago, and University of Virginia. I am really hoping that I get accepted to the schools I am interviewing with as UTEP was my safety school and I would really love to go to John Jay or UNL. We shall see.
