  1. LadyL-im so glad to see this thread! i had the same worries when i went on interviews. i particularly agree with what you said about us being at the entry-level of academia. i would prob care less when im more established i wouldnt say im particularly dressy but i do like adding a little creativity into my everyday wardrobe. i'd never wear a boring suit. i love vintage and this tends to be the norm at my current school so im very used to it. it was fine at one of my interviews. however, i was just totally blown off by what people were wearing at a few other interviews. it made me feel very out of place, indeed. i know it doesnt matter so much, but i tend to get very conscious of whether the way im dressed makes me out of place...
  2. are you interested in working with primates at all? you said you're interested in studying Alzheimer's but I'm not sure if you're interested in primate models. If so, I'd say Emory would definitley be a good place since they have such a wonderful resource for that. However, I don't know much about the neuroscience program at UCLA. But congrats on having such wonderful options to choose from:)
  3. having a bit more motivation for this last semester of college... and then of course, grad school
  4. its so great to see so many people are interested in social neuroscience:) I AM TOO
  5. so excited about making a decision soon:)

    Evanston, IL

im also trying to compare chicago vs. nyc, and it would be great if people who know these cities better could convince me one way or the other. i personally know nyc pretty well but have never been to chicago...
  7. i saw a northwestern acceptance in social psych on the results page. does that mean i should scratch northwestern off of my list?
  8. im pretty sure Rutgers is having their interview weekend on Feb.27th. i heard from them early jan. im in social psych btw.
  9. im just really hesitant about asking explicitly whether im accepted or not, esp. considering the email that a lot of people received this morning about how official acceptances wont be out until early march. that being said, it is a little frustrating not knowing what the status is on my application.
  10. hmmmm the one i've been invited to is Feb 27-Mar 1. guess it sounds more like an interview.
  11. i got the same email...and at the same time invited to their prospective students weekend. dont know what it means, does it mean its still completely diagnostic at this point?
  12. so it turn out to be a lot less severe than the weather forecast said (in my area) so i should have no problem making my way out to the airport and flying to my first interview weekend. good luck to the rest of you!
  13. i got invited to their "prospective students weekend". is it an interview or a visit after acceptance? so confused...
  14. i got accepted into their social program. but i dont know whether that means anything about the development program.
  15. i went shopping last weekend and got my interview outfit too, since i didnt have a suit and thought i'd need one sooner or later. i have appropriate flats to wear since i never wear heels, but im worried considering where im going for interviews its probably too cold to wear flats. i think i may still have to wear boots even though they look sort of weird with the suit. oh well.
  16. congrats!! since they're starting to send out official acceptances, social psych decisions should be somewhere in sight...
  17. I have heard from the faculty at UChicago but I'm in social psych so I don't know if that helps at all...
  18. Now that i've heard back from most of the schools, regardless of what the status is, i've started exploring their websites a bite more and comparing their course requirements and curriculum. I was somewhat surprised to find out how much schools/programs differed from each other in terms of their course curriculum design. Specifically, I've found UChicago to have not only the largest number of requirements (but we should also take into account the fact that they're on a quarter system unlike the other schools i've compared it to), BUT also the most rigid curriculum. by rigid i mean there doesn't seem to be as much flexibility in the sequence of courses or room for other courses. well i've always heard about how UChicago has the most demanding courseload, but i had always thought that only applied to undergrad. Now compare UChicago to NYU. NYU is a totally different story. Not only do they have fewer course requirements, but they also seem to be (at least judging from what they say on the website) more flexible and relaxed about the curriculum design, and allow more freedom to the students and their advisors to design their own sequence of courses. And UMich tends to fall somewhere in between. Now does anybody feel the same way? To me, coming from an extremely small liberal arts college, I am actually looking for a school where I can take more classes, so I'm not saying this is a bad thing. I just wanted to throw this out there and see what other people think. Have you heard anything about the course loads at any schools (def not limited to UChicago and NYU)? What do you tend to lean towards?
  19. thats good to know thanks! and it was exactly what im most worried about-being the only (or one of the few) overdressed interviewees and feel totally out of place and uncomfortable. and i've also been struggling with whether i can wear boots since im interviewing in the cold northeast..
  20. i woke up this morning to no snow whatsoever (it was supposed to start around midnight) so im slightly getting my hopes up for my flight (and my interviews of course).
  21. im in a similar situation:( im dont know the status of my flight yet but im very very worried about it. and the worst thing is this is not just a visiting weekend, but an interview weekend. its one of my favorite schools and i'd really hate to miss the interviews...
  22. Hey all, seems like nobody here has heard back from UChicago in any way yet. It seems really late for the school to not have done ANYTHING (i.e. interview invites, etc.) yet. Has anybody heard anything?
  23. i think social psych at UChicago has pretty much made their picks, and have passed them on to the graduate school for the final call
  24. thanks for the advice juror#1! thats really great that all three of your interviews worked out and didn't overlap with each other. i actually figured out that mine didn't overlap too much either so it should work out for me. im still waiting for the specific schedule of the weekend from one of the schools, but i think i could do thur-sat morning at one school and sat-afternoon-monday at the other. good luck with your interviews!!
  25. im visiting a school in about two weeks too. i haven't thought too much about what i'll ask, but i suppose questions about opportunities for collaboration in research, course load, TA/RA load, lectures/talks/colloquium, etc. would be appropriate to ask both faculty and students. would appreciate other input on this as well !
