  4. haha yeah that would be easier. in total, from school X i received 2 email rejections and 3 letter rejections. i guess they REALLY didn't want me to go there ha

  6. I think it is okay to email master's program profs as well. You would still be working in their lab right? I think emails should be pretty brief to potential professors. Something like: Dr. X, hi my name is blank and i'm interested in school Y's psychology program. I am interested in your blank research and was wondering if you were taking any students next fall. thank you, neuropsych76 Most of the time they'll give you a brief yes or no reply. but sometimes they'll ask for a cv or even want to talk on the phone. note: how the respond seems to have very little predictive value on if they will accept you though.
  7. i graduated college today but it doesn't really feel like i accomplished much since i have so much more school left

Graduating college is a huge accomplishment, way to go!

  8. How much longer do you have? If you really hate your program and still have a decent amount of time to finish, then yes I would consider transfering. Where is a much harder question. Since money is no object for you, that makes things much easier. Was your current program very expensive? Normally, online or working adult programs that are very expensive, have large class sizes, and poor quality, are not good schools to attend. I would try to attend a university based program, not a professional program.

  11. So I've decided to apply for a 1st year graduate fellowship application in my area. Basically, I send in a research proposal for my 1st year project. I need the proposal, a CV , and one LOR. The LOR can be from my graduate advisor or undergrad advisor. I've only met my graduate advisor once but have corresponded a decent amount through email discussing project ideas. I feel like having a graduate advisor write me a letter might have more weight compared to an undergrad advisor even though the undergrad advisors know me much better. But, I'm not sure... What do you guys think? Does a LOR for a graduate fellowship application contain more weight if its from the actual graduate advisor? Or does it not matter who its from, as long as the letter writer writes a good letter. thank you!
  12. I hear python is a very easy first programming language to learn. (and its free) you can find tons of stuff searching online
  13. i think stargazing is going to be my new hobby when i start grad school.

it'd be nice to go stargazing.. are you also implying that your campus is secluded? :P

you'll have no time for anything remotely close to that!

my campus is not that secluded (which is a nice change from undergrad) but i'd like to do some amateur astronomy if i can find time :)

  14. A section on schools would be great but probably wouldn't be too popular because of confidentiality issues. If it was anonymous or everyone created new user names then maybe.
  15. So basically the only thing the UC Davis has going for them is a slightly higher GPA? Considering how important research experience, good LOR's and a good personal statement are i would have to say the LAC student has better chances. The grad school app process with so convoluted with some many idiosyncrasies its really impossible to accurately chance anyone though.

  17. my girlfriend of 4 years and I will both be attending doctorate programs this fall...but 700 miles apart. sadly, we decided it would be best to end it since neither of us wants a relationship where we maybe see each other once a year. plus, it gives us a chance to grow individually instead of relying on each other like we did in undergrad. those are the positives, but it still really sucks.
  18. Update: Received my 3rd rejection letter from this school in the mail today. lol
  19. I think you are being too hard on yourself. You can still get into top schools with an average quant score if the rest of your application is outstanding. Yes, it will help your chances to have a higher score. But it is short sighted to say you have no chance getting into any top school with a 630 Q
  20. I've only seen quant psych programs in psychology departments but I would assume if the training is the same then the demand would be the same. However, quant psych in education departments might be more geared towards assessment whereas quant psych in psych departments is more geared towards research.

  22. I think you would be fine with the courses you have taken.
  23. i had an interview in march and i have still not heard anything from the school after multiple emails. good thing i didn't want to go there that much.
  24. It's great to see how many inspiring stories there are on here Mine isn't quite as inspirational but I'm also a first generation grad student. Mom only had high school, dad worked during day and went to school at night to support the family. So, just me wanting to go to grad school got some resistance from my parents ( i was focused on getting a phd since I was a freshman) because they were worried about money and if it was worth it. I guess the part of my story that makes me somewhat unique is that I was an awful student in high school. I almost failed out of school, was a trouble maker, and did not care about academics one bit. (no one believes me now that i'm a super nerd ) I was actually determined that I would be a pro athlete (lol) until I broke my ankle and could not play baseball my junior year. My senior year I decided to be more serious about school and stop getting involved in mischeif. I was lucky enough to be accepted into a solid liberal arts school and then I took off academically. It still hasn't sunk in that I was accepted into a cognitive neuroscience PhD program right out of undergrad considering how different of a person I was just a few years ago. If you're determined enough, you can accomplish anything, I'm proof.
