  1. The great Jewish comedian Sid Caesar got his name because his father was a tailor in the old country. When he arrived at Ellis Island he related this to the customs official by saying the only words he knew in English: "scissor, scissor," and the family name became Caesar.
  2. Kelkel!!!!! Congrats!!!!!! I'm now high-tailing it to the SUNY Stony Brook page with the delusion that perhaps the two are related.....
  3. Wow! Congrats jsolo!!
  4. A mid-eighteenth century mariner was able to smell the fragrance of fresh pine from 180 nautical miles off the coast of N America.
  5. Congrats! WashU seems like a great program. I don't know why I didn't apply there. I would have loved to work with Bernstein, we are like a perfect match. Come on UVA, you will totally be amazed and wowed by me and you'll never regret it!
  6. What is with Virginia?? My app web page is the same as its been for months. I suppose that's a good sign..... Tomorrow... Florida.... Deep Sea Fishing...... Rum......
  7. Hooray Monster!
  8. No, I was being melodramatic as I'm wont to do. I have to keep things in perspective. I may have some very sweet offers coming - no Harvard, Yale, or UVA but stepping stones nonetheless. So I'm gonna keep that and mind and quit being a baby. I just scurried to the UVA website and I have nothing there! Nor did I get an email. Looks like they're gonna torture me. Oh, the heartache and thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to! Seriously, I'm gonna try. No more melodrama!
  9. Yeah, we shall see what tomorrow brings. Now, back to Melville.
  10. I wonder if William and Mary has already sent out its acceptances. Sigh......
  11. Congrats qblue!!!!
  12. This is totally possible. At least it better be because this is pretty much where I was a year and a half ago. You should be able to glean a good number of historical works from the bibliographies of policy books and with creative use of google - especially google scholar which will become your best friend. Ask yourself what kind of historical questions appeal to you in a thematic sense and follow that line of inquiry and see where that takes you. In my case, I come from the world of int'l development, so I was very much interested in the development of capitalism, class formation, and the growth of 'civil society' (broadly construed), and that led me to my current interests. Just a little creative research, and many many, hours on faculty webpages alongside months exploring the scholarship and you will have a good idea of what you want to do and with whom. Once you are there, there will be the all-important nitty gritty of putting together a competitive application and we will be here to help! Do feel free to PM me if you have questions or are in need of further advice. Our situations are somewhat similar. I fled the policy-world and I'm so darned glad I did. That's a whole other rant. Hope this helps! Addendum: Look up Elizabeth Thompson at UVa. You could even just read her book, see whose work she builds upon and then take it from there. Discovering new fields of scholarship is a blast!
  13. And it seems like the former is more likely to fund MAs than the latter.
  14. Congrats Twist of Fate!!!!!!
  15. Congrats to the latest Harvard Am Civ acceptance! My chances there are increasingly bleak if not non-existent, and the prospect of a funded MA is becoming ever more alluring........
  16. Congrats Monster!
  17. This has been the longest month of my life.
  18. I dunno, I think that one can flow without rhyming. More broadly, I have serious doubts that anything has been recorded since 1980 that comes close to 56 seconds. Moby ruined it, perhaps more of a slaughter than what Puffy&Page did to Kashmir, but they just don't make 'em like this anymore. Or like this. See? I'm already old and crotchety? (Or I'm just a cultural Luddite. But ) @ Goldie, That really sucks. I was scared of flying like the first 30 times, and I'm still kinda scared, but your fear will diminish with time. I second the recommendations for a $12 Bloody Mary........
  19. Drain You. (favorite Nirvana song. This topic is beautifully out of control). And I don't know that Led Zep can be held responsible for what Puffy and Page did. They did cease to exist when Bonham died so I feel like talking about what "they" did post 1980 is a bit of an anachronism. And I think Hopin' n Prayin's master-narrative is excellent but I would disagree with the suggestion that rapping necessitates rhyming. Rap nowadays has much bigger artistic problems, in my opinion.
  20. Since we're doing this: You guys remember UFOs?
  21. Congrats!! May I ask how you found out? You can PM me if you wish.
  22. Dear lord, it's a bloodbath. Condolences to all the Penn rejectees......
  23. That's what I figured. I need some 'effin sleep.
  24. Well, it's potentially funded..... And I know that I can undergo this process again, no matter how much the notion makes me sick at the moment. I very well may do it. I have a protocol question: In the email from the DGS she said that they were very impressed/enthusiastic about my app but because I only had 3[sic] History courses they wanted to admit me for the MA. The error is that I have 5 history courses, 2 of which are grad seminars. I'm scared that they were only looking at my undergrad transcript and that they didn't see my 2 grad seminars. She even said that (paraphrase) they didn't have evidence that I could do History at the grad level (my writing sample! I may cry). Should I risk emailing back and trying to correct her if she is in fact mistaken? I'm currently very much against the idea but if anyone thinks otherwise I'd love to hear it. @Sandy, Did you get invited to the NYU soiree?
  25. I would like a Molson
