  1. I think those are very fair points. At the same time, I think that perhaps the viewer is potentially more discerning than we give them credit for. Maybe he/she would recognize that those are pictures of Native Americans, hence they are not fully accurate depictions of them in the 17th century. I don't know that it's necessarily an inaccuracy if an artist relies on a subjective interpretation to place the image in its proper context. Maybe it is. Still, it might behoove him to put some sort of disclaimer at the beginning or end. But that's difficult to do with film. That's why I'm happy I'll write books - that almost nobody will read..........
  2. Ok, my girlfriend is getting her MLS and apparently elements within the archival community criticize Ken Burns for precisely this. It's been a hot topic in our house, and it really sticks in my craw, so it's cool to see it brought up here. I really don't think the criticism is fair. First of all, he's doing public history and he's trying to relate history to a mass audience - he's not writing a dissertation. Anything that makes history more accessible, I'm all for. Secondly, he's a filmmaker, and images aren't always available. Last night I was watching his Mark Twain documentary and he was treating Twain's travels in the Mid-East. He didn't have an image of Twain at the Pyramids so he used some random image of a mustachioed, late 19th century man. Would archivists prefer that he just leave the screen blank? I don't see what the problem is. Again, he's not writing a dissertation. I think it's nitpicking and I really don't think it's right to criticize the one person trying to inject some history into an intellectually neutered and de-historicized popular culture because he doesn't live up to the rigorous standards of the archival community. Again, he's an artist not a scientist. I don't think it's fair to import scientific standards into his craft. That was cathartic. I will now step down off my soapbox.
  3. Pupusas!!!!! Well, they arent really baked but i suck at precise measurements. Seriously, guys, I need to hear something..........

  6. For me, the deafening silence is torturous!!!!
  7. I don't know if I can deal with another week of anticlimactic boredom.
  8. I love Norton and Penguin.

  10. Thomas Jefferson's chef (whom he "owned," it should be noted), James Hemings, brought the recipe for Mac n Cheese back from France. It was known as Macaroni Pudding.
  11. Just to kind of jump on the bandwagon: It's totally reasonable to ask a prof if he/she is tenured in order to be certain that they will actually be in the department for 6-8 years, right? I know it's not good to go to a program based on one POI, but in this case he tips the balance.
  12. I wholeheartedly second this.

  14. Well, I think that there is definitely pride - much of it well-earned and eminently deserved. This has been a grueling process which has taken up a lot of time for many people and they are understandably euphoric seeing their toil pay off. I don't think that there is any intentional "rubbing it in," people just want to celebrate and be recognized. Obviously, it stings for those of us who are still on the edge of our seats and seeing people savor their victories could strike us as an affront. But chill, let them have their moment in the sun. We will all be there, either this year or the next. My $.02..... Now, can I please get a decision????
  15. Yeah, I knew something was afoot when my posts per day went from .12 to like .3 in the span of a month.......... I've been going crazy!!!!! I'm with applicant12 in wondering about NYU's weekend. Anyone? Oh, and congrats to the georgetown admit and condolences to the Wisconsin rejects (that sounds really sad).
  16. That doesn't seem silly at all People can be too stuffy about things like this. There are other ways to learn beyond a traditional four-year college.
  17. Starting Max Edelson's Plantation Enterprise in Colonial South Carolina. I'm thinking it might be kinda Stuart Schwartzy. God, I wish I had gotten into Yale Scratch that - this book is way cooler.
  18. Yeah, I think a community college would be just as helpful, especially if you're going to showcase yer new language skills in a writing sample. I don't think they care so much about how you got your language.. But wait, it's still early February! Don't fold up your tents just yet. And..... we have a Georgetown acceptance! Anybody care to claim it?
  19. I think there was talk of an unofficial Stanford acceptance yesterday. Maybe like 8 pages back or something. I could be wrong..... We just need to get through the 'teens of February. Then it will actually start happening.
  20. Thanks It wasn't my intention to give you what could turn out to be false hope about Yale..... Only time will tell.
  21. GloFish, RuPaul and Roxelana: Congrats!!!!!! I would be very, very happy with any of those outcomes. Especially 48 hours in Manhattan, no matter what I was doing Volta, definitely don't give up on Yale. If there is a wait list, and this is pure conjecture, I would imagine that the interviewees that didn't get accepted would be the first to be put on it. I can't take anymore of these anti-climactic days!!! Yale is the only school I applied to that has even admitted anybody. Blah. PS: It's nice seeing you guys unlurk. Big, welcoming, good vibes being sent yer way.
  22. Hey Always Sunny, I don't want to make you regret your decision to join us (it's a lovely place, really) but can you give me any info on Stony Brook?? You can PM me if you like, we might both prefer that. I'm actually really excited about that program. I hope my enthusiasm is well founded.... Congratulations and a very warm welcome to the maniacal camaraderie that is this magnificent thread!
  23. Yeah, that's what I figured.
  24. How DOES "extra money" work? Would we basically have the freedom to get whatever external funding we can get our hands on? Or are there certain fellowships tht we can't have in conjunction with a university fellowship/TAship? Is this too difficult/vague of a question to answer? Lotsa question marks; I wanted one sentence to end with a period.
  25. It's agonizing. There was that rejection yesterday so I would imagine they are close to notifying people. But their website is just absurdly slow to update. Their program has really grown on me lately, too...
