  1. Well, if this is in reference to me then you're a little off base but that's ok. The PM was sent because I'm a former Latin Americanist/ current transnationalist; my grandfather was a somewhat important figure in Guatemalan history, so I just let the poster know. No feathers ruffled!! You couldn't have known that, and given how crazy I've been I wouldn't put such a move past me either. If that post wasn't in reference to me, well, then there goes my ego again. It's all good! I do take your point and if that had been my motive, yes, it would have been incredibly callous.
  2. hehe, even better. check your PM!
  3. Congrats!!!!! Are you going to be doing Brazilian history?
  4. You guys are the best. I was literally on my porch today angrily crumpling up a handful of Target and Rite Aid circulars, wailing "why, why whyyyyyyyyyy???" I must remember to laugh at myself.
  5. Would anyone like to claim the Umass admit? Please? I'm starting to get progressively more freaked out as the programs I applied to begin to notify and all I get from my email is a cold, blank stare.......
  6. This is a Baxendale:
  7. It's just really unsettling how racist rhetoric has transmuted into this passive-aggressive, supposedly "neutral" language. I know that the self-conception of white people as "oppressors-now-oppressed" dates back at least as far as Reconstruction and the idea of "negro rule," but the fact that this educated lady was able to couch what is indisputably racist sentiment in what she would consider to be thoroughly innocuous language really makes me pessimistic about the future of this country - especially as we get closer to the point where whites are a minority. Thank god I don't live in Arizona. Now, to try to bring this back to apps: I was meandering around PHDS.org last night looking at job outcomes for various departments, and it was really striking how many of them have a 55-45 split between people employed within the US and people employed without. Maybe the job market isn't as bad if we are willing to live abroad? After that woman, I'm totally enthusiastic about such a possibility. Addendum: I should say that she was a very nice lady. She probably doesn't have any conscious hatred of the racial Other and I think that my story says more about the culture we live in than it does about the character of that woman.
  8. Guys, I don't want to start a race war, and maybe this belongs in the "Shit people say when you're applying to grad school thread," but this is just too infuriating: I'm at the hospital, my mom just had surgery, and I'm making small talk with a post-doc researcher (an educated woman) outside her room. And she says: "of course you didn't get into Yale. You're a white male!" I didn't get into Yale because I wrote a piece of shit book review, not because of affirmative action, which, if people actually took the time to think about these things, they would realize is not a zero-sum-game. It has actually expanded access for everybody, not taken away white people's cake in order to give it to minorities. Not to mention that on the Harvard app there is literally that box where you are supposed to check if you are a Baxendale or a Thayer. Clearly, white privilege is extant. Maybe this woman was just so wowed with my dashingly good looks that she just said something really stupid. I'm sorry. I'm stressed for many, many reasons and I didn't need to get hit in the brain with a big wave of stupidity.
  9. I practically lunged at my mailman yesterday. Alas, there was nothing but credit card offers.
  10. Something! Anything!! Most of my programs have only just begun to trickle out decisions, and some haven't even done that. The silence has left me numb - aaaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhhh PS: If that W&M admit wants to remain incognito he/she can PM me......probably wouldn't have much to tell me anyway.
  11. Congrats to the first William and Mary admit!!! Does someone want to claim it?
  12. Congrats!!!!!!!!! Now I want to run home and check my mailbox..... Can I ask who your POI is?
  13. Hehe.. Now I have an image of somebody poking their head out of a pile of carnage and screaming "does anyone here study the antebellum south?!". (it actually is germane to dealing with carnage, but that's another matter entirely) Anyway, I'm just gonna ask people straight up what I should call them. Can I please not have another anticlimactic week?????
  14. Edmund Morgan's The Genuine Article, Alan Lomax's The Land Where The Blues Began, and I just finished Huck Finn (again). I'm an Americanist.......
  15. It seems to me like most offices are open and classes are being held...... I think it's totally reasonable to expect to hear something today.
  16. Can you be more specific?
  17. Congrats Sandy!!!
  18. Sex Machine
  19. Congrats Goldie!!!!!
  20. That's a noble dream.....
  21. This is so well-said and so true. Sorry about my UVa freakout and thanks for talking me down. You all rule.
  22. Oh, AFB...... We have so many similarities. I'm mentally composing my letter to you. It's all gonna work out!
  23. Pugsley, you just made me cry!! This whole process is so nuts.Thank you, they were good tears. I didn't hear no fat lady sing.
  24. Maybe it's a hasty assumption. Sorry!! I'm completely losing it.... It just seems like all the Americanists have been notified. Maybe not.
  25. I so didn't get into UVa This is a huge tragedy and I'm being super melodramatic about it. Now I have to go to a family function where everyone will be asking me about my apps. This blows.
