Thank you Sandy! The thing is that the potential for the funded MA changes everything. Now I'm thinking that if I get rejected from all my top schools I might consider doing the MA and repeating this glorious escapade in a year or two...... It's just that it would suck to go that route and then be rejected again from my top choices, and this process is wacky enough to do that to me. I've decided to just hold off on all weighing-of-contingencies until I have at least a few more decisions. Until then, I'm just gonna play lots of Bananagrams. I highly recommend it for getting to April the Fifteenth.

Check your PM.

Congratulations!

Thanks Monster and I'm sorry about everything that happened today - that's truly terrible. Thank god this rotten #€&@ing month will soon be behind us. I can't take this ambiguity anymore!!!!!

Ok, so I just got offered an MA at UMass........ I doubt I'll take it if there isn't any funding and I get a funded offer elsewhere, but it's nice to know that I will have that option if I go down in flames everywhere else. Still, no concrete offer for a fully funded phd has materialized. Sigh........

Condolences all around..... The day is young indeed

Random Thought: If I'm dedicated to the fact that I am going to be Americanist then I could theoretically already be reading my comps list, right? If I've gleaned a reading list from bibliographies, syllabi and personal recommendations then can't I include a good deal of these works in my eventual master list? Maybe what I'm really getting at is the question of how the list is built.... Talk about putting the cart before the horse!

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school

"how could you be rejected? You're the smartest person I know!" Perhaps, but that says more about you than it does about me....... -

Guys, I too am going to Florida a week from today and that means that I'm gonna be away from my mailbox for six whole days. This coming week NEEDS to bring good news or else I will be an absolute wreck. Sigh......

Hello AlleyKat, welcome and congratulations!!! I think that somebody on here said that Temple is sorting out their funding after they make their offers, which is very difficult for me to understand the reasoning behind (maybe they are waiting to see how fellowship nominations turn out?). Either way, it's difficult to imagine them extending you an offer without being able to offer you funding, so congrats!!! I quoted the wrong half of your post so if people are confused they'll just have to do a little research or give up entirely on contexualizing my inconsequential ramblings....I'm on my phone.

Yeah, just enough Hebrew to put it on my resume and get myself in trouble with bands of roving/raving Zionists......... Did you get an invite to NYU's thingamajig?
-
I'm fuming with jealousy. Please NYU, please, pretty please with a fucking cherry on top. In fact, I might officially hate you with your updates about taking the F train. Of course, i'm joking. You're one of my favorite chaverim. I just really love NY

Hey, that's great! Be happy, it's something.

Yeah, I totally second this. I'm hoping that my non-History master's will improve my competitiveness on the job market. Especially as the field becomes more transnational in its approach. So, as Telemaque said, if you want to be a legal historian that JD is another arrow in your quiver.

I think we can safely assume that that was someone who called or emailed to check and got the "don't-ruffle-feathers-rejection."

Based on last year, UIC should be notifying right about now. They're driving me nuts.

Ok, so I just got an email from the DGS at Rochester letting me know that I'm on the waitlist. It was a really kind and somewhat flattering note. He actually enumerated the specific strengths of my app. I guess this is something! Now I have to figure out how to respond.......... Addendum: I really like the idea of a History Dept housed within a library building. It's a pretty library too! I'm very sensitive to environment/ambience and I'm afraid that may hurt me because I loathe brutalist architecture with the same ferocity that Oseirus loathes the History Channel. Anyway.......

Yup, it's been yet another anticlimactic slog.....

Now I'm worried that I didn't emphasize my foreign adventures enough in my apps..... Maybe it's time to dust off the SOPs.

Swirled, Did you just get accepted to Temple as well?

I'd just like to second what everyone has said. If you don't get in anywhere or if you aren't particularly excited about your options I would definitely advise you to get to The Golden Horn (that's like almost too amazing to imagine. simone, it seems like you've been there. i am so jealous. my aegean yacht fantasy-cruise ends at the bosphorous, but i digress). Not only is it probably a ridiculously sweet and interesting place, the experience will change the way you view the world in ways that will make you an infinitely better academic. Although we don't know that you aren't already the consummate cosmopolite, the point is that these sorts of experiences are almost always beneficial and that you should seize the opportunity if it's there. Especially if you are young. See what happens with your last doctoral app and whether or not you get a funded MA. I would definitely say that you should go to Turkey if the alternative is getting into debt. It would suck to pay for an MA with the knowledge that if you had waited a year you would have had a shot at a fully-funded doctorate.

Jesus. I am hopelessly egocentric. Yes, back to our regularly scheduled programming of semi-humorous griping and invaluable support and advice.
