Previous Cheating Infraction
Crimson Wife replied to GaGirl92's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I personally think you'd have a better shot if you worked for a few years in a related job like as a SLPA, special ed paraprofessional, Applied Behavioral Analysis interventionist, Lindamood-Bell tutor, etc. and then applied. It'd be more plausible for you to say as a 25 y.o. with a few years of successful work experience under your belt that you've matured than as a 22 y.o. new college grad. -
Wait for Fall grades or send before?
Crimson Wife replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I sent CSDCAS my transcripts already because I heard they could take a while to verify them. I will update after fall grades post. -
dependents on the app
Crimson Wife replied to OverCaffeinated's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
The reason I decided to pursue a career in SLP is because of my youngest child so that's definitely a big part of my application. Maintaining good grades in my 2nd BA courses should show that I'm capable of handling the grad school workload. -
What else do you have on your plate for the next few months? If you're still taking classes I would concentrate more on maintaining or improving your GPA than studying for the GRE. That's why I decided against retaking the GRE at this point. If I don't get in this cycle I'll prep more on the quant (I'd focused on the verbal) and retake it later. Right now I feel maintaining a 4.0 in my CSD courses is a higher priority.

Audiology and PhD. programs in CSD/Hearing & Speech Science both skew a bit less heavily female than SLP so it makes sense that there are more male CSD undergrads than SLP students. It would be interesting to see stats on career aspirations for male vs. female CSD undergrads.

I did a hybrid resume where I highlighted the relevant recent volunteer experiences but did briefly list my older employment (my last paid job ended in '05 when my 2nd child was born) just so there wouldn't be any gaps between when I finished my 1st bachelor's and today.

Frankly, I would advise doing the training to become an Academic Language Therapist first as it's much shorter and cheaper than SLP. Certified ones in my neck of the woods charge $100/hr., and even though that is gross rather than net, you'd still be making decent take-home pay. https://www.altaread.org/membership.asp If you decide that you really want to do SLP, you could presumably finance the post-bac coursework through working as a CALT.

I repeated Organic Chemistry 1. This was the course my 1st alma mater used as "weed-out" for pre-meds and they set the median grade to a C+ (ouch!) So pretty much everyone who continued on as a science major and/or pre-med wound up repeating the course. My transcript lists the 1st grade as RP with 0 credits and then the 2nd grade I kept with the credits earned. I had to flag it in CSDCAS as a repeated course and I don't believe that it factors into their calculations. I can't imagine that a SLP program is going to base their acceptance/rejection of me on the fact that almost 20 years ago I had to take orgo twice, KWIM?

Questions for SLP Grad students from a HS mom
Crimson Wife replied to slpmom's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Some grad schools definitely favor their own undergrads (the Cal States are notorious for this) while others actually have much better acceptance rates for out-of-field applicants than in-field ones. I'm taking classes towards a 2nd BA and was told by the head of one of my target schools that their acceptance rate for non-CSD is quadruple that of CSD majors so I should apply with only a few CSD credits rather than waiting until I finish. The one thing about majoring in a non-CSD field like psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, etc. is that it will add a year to the master's. So there's a definite financial benefit to doing the CSD major undergrad. But the tradeoff is that she'd be competing in a much bigger applicant pool and it's that much harder to stand out from the crowd. -
USU course registration
Crimson Wife replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Some classes you won't be able to register for unless you're in the 2nd BA program. I forget exactly ones which have the restriction but I started in non-degree status and wasn't able to register for my 2nd term courses until the department formally admitted me to the 2nd BA. -
USU course registration
Crimson Wife replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
USU splits the required A&P of Speech & Hearing course over 3100 (A&P of speech) and 3400 (A&P of hearing) so you will need to take both in order to satisfy grad school pre-reqs. At least that is what I was told by the head of one of my target schools. It's kind of annoying that USU does it that way, but better to know ahead of time that grad schools will expect you to have both on your transcript. -
Worth retaking GRE for AW???
Crimson Wife replied to Jolie717's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I've been told that many schools don't even consider the AW score if the verbal is strong. It remains TBD how true that will prove, but I decided to save the $200 unless I don't get in this year. -
East Coast Schools for Deaf Studies
Crimson Wife replied to slptobe92's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
There aren't that many SLP programs that have a dhh track and of those that do, the ones I know of aside from Gallaudet and Fresno State tend to focus on Listening & Spoken Language rather than ASL. I could give you a list of those schools if you're interested. -
CSDCAS Transcript Entry & Grad Prerequisites
Crimson Wife replied to Crimson Wife's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
This was the issue and I was able to get it figured out eventually. -
I'd like to know this as well. I'm not sure how much of my OOF stuff to even include in my application since they were from my 1st degree.

Oh boy...I think I've been too interdisciplinary
Crimson Wife replied to skatering's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Developmental Psychology might have some researchers working on that topic. -
Academic Language Therapy was actually my original Plan A before my daughter's hearing loss was discovered in February and I decided that SLP was a better plan. You don't need a graduate degree to become certified, only completion of a training program in multisensory structured literacy: https://www.altaread.org/membership.asp To become a certified Educational Therapist and earn a higher rate, you would need a master's degree. This is the program I was originally going to apply to: https://www.hnu.edu/academics/graduate-programs/master-arts-educational-therapy No requirement for the GRE and I believe the minimum GPA is 3.0.

Is it going to be a big red flag for grad schools if I scored a 169V but only a 154Q? I focused my prep on the verbal since I knew it was more important for SLP and I'm trying to maintain a 4.0 in my post-bacc coursework. I could re-take the GRE before applications are due, but I'm not sure whether it's a good use of money and study time. I scored 700 on the SAT-M back in high school so I know that I *COULD* do better with a lot more practice. The question is how important an improved quant score would be to my applications vs. focusing on other areas like post-bacc GPA and volunteering.

Other online prereq schools
Crimson Wife replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
If you do the full 2nd BA through USU you won't need a separate language disorders course. Neuro is offered through Eastern NM if you need that (I studied psychology and human bio during my 1st degree so I've already had that). -
How are you noting your observation hours?
Crimson Wife replied to esopha's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
There is a "shadowing" section on CSDCAS, which is where those observation hours go.
