    Okay I don't want to be morbid or anything, but I really need help. Anyone have any advice for addressing that nagging thought in the back of your mind that tells you you aren't good enough to be a sociologist? I honestly believe right now I'm going to look back on my Wisconsin rejection and always feel that everything I do academically will have that shadow cast on it; even if it's not visible to anyone else,, it's a heavy heavy shadow. I need help, advice, or general good vibes. I don't want to feel this way, but I'm so scared of regretting my choice in attending a program like I regret going to my undergrad institution.

    I feel like this question becomes more complicated depending on the field people are entering. Sure sociology programs are known for their work on inequality, demography, and (insert other concentration of your choice), but some fields of the discipline don't enjoy as much institutional support. Environmental sociology, which is one of my primary interests, is a good example of this. There are very few top 20 programs that have an environmental speciality (Wisconsin is the only program in the top 10 that has environmental sociology as a core research area, and Arizona, Maryland, and Brown are now situated outside of the top 20) and most other programs only have a smattering of faculty that do environmental soc research. So in a field like that, it's more necessary to choose a superstar advisor that can help to overcome the lack of degree prestige that often comes with a PhD in one of those concentrations. I am probably biased, as I could enjoy the possibility of working with Tom Shriver (a well respected and renowned environmental sociologist) at a more midrange program (NCSU), and I'm still waiting to hear back from Oregon about any movements on the wait list, but some of us don't have the opportunity to choose a program that can be separated from the professors identified in their SOP. Any advice for folks like me?

    I know I asked this earlier and it seems that the thread is dying down as people contemplate their offers and what not, but if you're going into environmental soc, environmental justice, inequality, community sociology, sociology of agriculture, or rural sociology, feel free to PM me so we can connect! I wanna make sure that I can help support the folks who have supported me through these tumultuous times!

    Working in North Carolina on finishing up data collection for my thesis. 17 interviews down, 8 to go. Got notified I got accepted and funded at Penn State, but it's in rural sociology and not the soc & crim department proper so I'll have to do a lot of thinking.

    As if it wasn't already obvious, I got not one but two emails today from Wisconsin informing me I've been rejected. But we've been knew about that rejection!

    Story time - tonight I finally got to attend a meeting for an organization that I’ve been trying to get in with for months for my thesis. And I managed to sit next to a PhD student from UCSB who was also at the same meeting taking ethnographic notes! What a small world!

    Updating folks since I’ve been gone for what feels like forever - still no word for me from Penn State or Utah. Hoping that I’ll advance off the Oregon waitlist but I’m excited about the prospect of NCSU because Tom Shriver offered to be my advisor, and he’s one of the greats in EJ, so that’s just really really exciting. Currently in North Carolina collecting thesis data - good vibes appreciated!

    Just got anxious and called Oregon. The person I spoke with said that the committee should be communicating their admissions decisions either early this week or early next week. Specifically, they mentioned that the committee has made their decisions, so be on the lookout for emails if you applied! Updating to say that I just got an email informing me I’m waitlisted at Oregon, so if you got accepted and know that you won’t be accepting their offer, please let them know ASAP! They sent out about 12 offers, and have 9 on the waitlist, just as an FYI for everyone else! Good luck!

    Anyone want to claim the Oregon acceptance? Haven’t heard anything from the program so that makes me nervous, but there’s also only one acceptance on the board so far, so it makes me wonder if they’re doing waves like the other programs.

    I had a super long response typed out, and then my wifi cut out when trying to post it and now my entire message is gone. I honestly don't have the spoons to retype the whole thing, but it was pretty much that "we have to focus on the prestige of a degree because it is a real factor that can determine our chances of employment after graduation; moreover, I haven't decided anything yet, and I know NCSU is a good program. I'm just worried about their overall placement of graduates, but these are questions that will get addressed when I attend their open house in March. During the application process and during my thesis research, I seem to have more clearly discovered exactly what my interests are concerning the interactions between industry, the environment and the law, so I owe it to myself to consider how those interests may or may not be supported by any programs I get into this cycle."

    Congrats on the Madison acceptance! Know that if you don't get in anywhere else, that you got into a great program with a great reputation.

    LOL thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Right now I'm just watching RuPaul's Drag Race and trying to figure out my options for thesis research. My advisor wants me to have 25 interviews, and I have 2 right now. Was gonna go up to my research site this month and get the rest, but that may not happen now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated though. Let this be a lesson for future research projects - try to predict how controversial the issue is that you're researching before you begin the project. It could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

    On top of my Madison rejection, my Utah application may not be considered for funding because they're showing that they haven't gotten my GRE scores yet, and my gatekeeper in the field for my thesis work just recused themselves from being a gatekeeper, and i'm supposed to defend my thesis in 2 months. It's been a day.

    As someone who’s cried twice in two days about my UW-M decision, it’s important to remember we are worth so much more than our rejections. So, so much more.

    I called earlier today requesting info about my application, and the DGS just called me back and said he takes no pleasure in informing people that they've been rejected. Said that there were a ton of applicants and they're very financially strained.
