  1. Your "About Me" section is heartening, lily. Wonderful! Go you!

  2. She got into the MA with no funding (no thanks). I agree with you about the money. And thank you for the good wishes.

  3. So I'm wondering how you faired? I didn't get in anywhere, but I learned a lot about the process. I'll be trying again next year (and of all the schools I applied to only IUB is back on the list). You?

  4. Hey, hey. I just wanted to let you know that a colleague from my UG institution got into Brandeis, too. Have you decided where you'll attend yet? I'll be trying again next year.

  5. Yes, I did. When I spoke with her in the fall, she mentioned that she's been unwell. Such a super nice lady. I also spent some time with John Lincoln Schilb, also a very nice man, and a professor from the Religious Studies dept (that would be one of my subfoci). I'm still praying (and I'm agnostic! Snort!).

  6. That's super nice of you to offer. I visited campus last fall and met some folks, just drove down from my dad's. All around this would be the best place for me and my family. I am still holding out my teeny, tiny, raging flame of hope :D

  7. Hey there. I'm 0-2 formally, but thinking it's probably more like 0-5. I was ill-prepared for this process, had no clue what my SoP was supposed to accomplish. So if I do go straight 0-6, then I know better next year. Like you, I refuse to give up. Is this your first try? I have a friend who is on her 5th year of trying. She has stellar grades, scores, and is published. So...

  8. Do you know who's on the adcomm at IU? I'm wondering if any of the professors I met are on it. I am dying tiny deaths by the second ova he-ah!

  9. Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, UNC Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins, IU Bloomington.

  10. Me too, but it ain't lookin' good, hon ;) I'm OK. Met with a sage counselor last night and got my head screwed on straight. I know what I have to do and I will try again next year. As Samuel Beckett said, "Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." Or even fail beautifully. At least I tried!

  11. Saw your good news! Where'd you get in?

  12. Hello. I read your post about having to reapply, and I noticed that your application season says Spring 2010. Is that for entry this spring or for deadlines? I haven't seen programs yet that allow applications after the typical Dec-Jan cut off, so I'm curious.

  13. I graduated May 2009. I never got my degree when I was young because I got pregnant (and then pregnant again). So I started in Fall 2006 and finished last May. It was quite the whirlwind. And I totally get the department darling thing.

  14. Nice. I posted but they were all pretty boring, old lady good things. Exceedingly practical with the exception of the trip to Italy.

  15. LOL! It cut me off. The world will not come to an end if we don't get in this year (and this from a woman who might have to wait another 5 years to try again if she doesn't).

  16. I can understand the feeling. There are so many reasons that these decisions are made though. I was totally the department darling at my school, and it never even occurred to me to expect a rejection, which was ridiculous of no one to point out to me. So I totally get that it hurts, but don't give up hope yet. There's still two weeks of maybe out there, and even then the world will not ...

  17. Hm. I had the same thought about digging out of snow storms. Really though cooling your jets is a good way to go. One way or another, you'll start getting answers soon. March is the usual time for the flurry of English department decisions. You'll know everything you need to know in the next two weeks.

  18. Ho boy. Huge bummer. You still have a bunch of schools to hear from though. I've only got 3 left. I should have applied to a dozen like you did.

  19. English, critical theory. My list of places applied is in my signature line.

  20. Ooh, what's the thread idea? Reasons to be GLAD we got rejected? Seems counterintuitive but maybe more realistic ;)

  21. So, so sorry to hear this, hopefulJ. Where did you hear from? Remind me where you've applied. I've gotten 3 rejects so far. So I'm feeling the burn also.

  22. Just thought I'd say hello. What's your discipline? Where have you applied?

  23. Thanks. You're very kind. I've been talking with a fellow from Cornell via PM. Our portfolios are almost identical with the exception that he did his UG there and his MA at Penn. So he knows people in the program and already has an MA. I really think it has to do with my esoteric research interests at this point, since I know it's not my grades or scores.

  24. Thanks hon. I know you were. I'll be interested to see what you hear from the DGS. I'm waiting on Bloomington, Harvard, and Columbia (so basically just Bloomington). Haven't had the official reject from Cornell, but can assume. Losing hope today. Totally bummed and sad.

  25. I hate to tell you this. I just got my rejection letter from Chapel Hill :s
