I work on campus and so does my partner. Neither of us even consider driving, it's just way too expensive. I don't know a single graduate student that has a permit- it's less expensive to just live close enough to campus or a busline. I live too far to walk, but I can take the bus, bike path, or get a ride from my partner. It's just far less of a hassle than parking, because it's also hard to find spots I've heard unless you get there at 6 am. It's urban, so there are few spots and things are expensive. I'd suggest taking the bus. Sorry I don't have specific numbers- no one I know has a permit!

Ohio State acceptances

Sorry if I've offended, I just really did not like my three years time here. Again, that might be because of the neighborhood, and not Columbus as a whole, as well as my personal preferences. It's important for me to be able to walk SOMEWHERE once in a while and this is a very suburban yet urban town. Worst of both worlds in my opinion. I am from Indiana and Columbus is really not that different from where I've grown up, so maybe that's why I'm ready to go. Take my opinion with a grain of salt; people are very different in what they like and are used to. -

No, I don't think you can count on summer work. It's available but I would not count on it. The stipend last year was 14,500 exactly. Honestly it is very cheap to live in Columbus because it is not a nice city to live in, in my opinion. I would advise against living in Clintonville/North campus; I absolutely do not like it. Live in Victorian Village or the Short North, which, of course, is going to be more expensive because it's a nice place to live. -
No, I have been wondering the same thing. He mentioned that they would pay for everything and I thought the details would be in the letter. But they weren't and yeah, I don't know how to make travel plans. I was thinking of emailing him in a week or so.

Who has heard? Also, is there a way to check admissions status through their system? Does anyone know how they notify?
-
Yes, I am taking this to be an implicit rejection. Not too surprised though.
-
Yeah, that's where I click, but I can't find any place where the status is. All I see it other business, like addresses, applicant data, etc. Congrats on the waitlist, hope you make it in!

How walking friendly is the city, especially near the university? Are there places where mostly undergraduates live? Is it possible to live in walking distance from campus but also avoid undergraduate noisy party neighborhoods?
-
There's a result that says waitlisted at Michigan, which I'm assuming in University of Michigan, yet no accepts yet. Anyone else heard anything? Also, is there a place on wolverine access to see admissions status? I can do all the student center stuff, but I don't see a place to check on the status.
-
Hey thanks! That's exactly what I wanted to know.

What's going on with Rutgers? Any insider information? Since getting rejected from Wisconsin, they've been bumped up to my top choice. I'm assuming though that the competition is probably very stiff this year, like all the other schools.

Some friends on facebook were saying they got waitlisted. I don't think they posted their results here. This with the acceptances on the board is leading me to believe it's not good news for me. -
No I didn't, I just got an email randomly. BUT. I want to stress that I'm positive that if you didn't get it, it doesn't mean anything, assuming your application was complete and everything. If you'll see in the Wisconsin thread, some people were kind of freaking out because they didn't recieve an anagalous email about knowing by Feb. 14. I got the email and others didn't and I got rejected. It means nothing; it's random.

I got an email saying we should know by the 1st of March. Which is way too far away.

Any word on UNC at Chapel Hill?
woolfie replied to Hermione's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I haven't seen anything or heard anything from them. I think that they recently got rid of an MA program, or cut down their program like a lot of schools, and I'm assuming its the old 12-15 admits. But this is just my speculation. -

Aw man, I thought I had a chance. This was my top choice, I've been on the edge of my keyboard all week. Oh well, at least it's not the first school I heard from; I've got some good news to rest on. The stipend of 10K was very low and I was worried about it, so I guess it solves that problem. Congrats to those who got in! -

Oo, there's another one. Looks like they are notifying fellowship recipients. Hopefully all the other admits are on their way... -

What's your area of specialization? -
Do you mean for the PhD program? Cause there are multiple ones from this year for the MA. Looking at their graduate students, it looks like they have very very few phd students. I personally think Delaware seems like a good program, but I've been told that they are ranked "too low." Not saying it's right, but that's what a prof told me. Though, I'm an colonial Americanist and I found this recently: http://www.english.ucsb.edu/undergrad/aftermajor/gradrankings.asp Scroll down to colonial American lit.

This is just a rumor, absolutely nothing is decided. I just know they are having budget problems and with the switch to semester, if they keep the teaching load one course per term, which is quarters now so 3 courses per year, it will switch to 2 per year on the semester. So that's less work for the same stipend so they are going to have to change it. I've just heard people say there is no way they can, with the budget, keep the stipend where it is for 2 courses per year, 1 per semester. I would think they should keep it three courses per year, have 2 courses in the second semester, but who knows. Again, this is just what I've heard through hearsay. I think 2012 is the year for semester conversion. -

They used to have a terminal master's program, and now they only have PhD track. I think it was last year that they got rid of the master's program. Like all universities these days, they have having a lot of problems. Plus they are switching from quarters to semesters and that is causing problems with teaching loads, and the word round town is that they are going to double up the load. -
Ways to Combat the Crazy
woolfie replied to Lemonade's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
One thing that I've encountered is that, when tying up loose ends, just taking care of things while waiting, people, not graduate students, hear that I'm moving and they ask where. And i have to say, well I don't know yet. And people who aren't involved in graduate study or academia just look at you like you're crazy. Getting ready to move to a place you don't know where it will be is the hardest part about this for me..
