Film Studies is basically what Zizek does best, isn't it? I vote to allow him into Kallipolis.

Excellent! I hope it means all the good things.

ohgodohgod. EEEEEEEEEE. Fingers crossed.

Dude, sounds awesome. I'm just floored that someone even decided to read my writing sample without me having to pay them (although, I suppose I did, in a way). It sounds like they're into you. It's the adcom version of "hook me up with your friend."

About 30 mins ago. I hope you get in, too!

I'm claiming it. Like the other person said before, hesitatingly. It's a little bittersweet. I was looking through your blog, and I absolutely see that you deserve it too. I think it was personalized, so there's a chance that they're still sending out emails. Please don't be filled with dread.

I'm not even committed to the argument. I have no idea where it came from even. I surprised myself.

Ugh. He's the best. Glory be to God for dappled things. For skies of couple colored as a brinded cow. And for Hopkins, too. Who makes my life better every day. :') Work on the paper. I'll work on one too. We'll reignite the fire.

They asked me why I like continental philosophy. Well, I didn't prep for the interview at all. So I said something like, because I grew up Catholic, and I think that Continental philosophy took it's place. And then one guy was like, "What does that even mean?" And I said, "Because continental philosophy has the whole spectacle of the mass, and is built on faith and doubt. The catholics only give lip service to doubt, but the continental philosophers really do it." Or something like that, and then something about how continental philosophers are better catholics than catholics are. eeeeeee. And then, because I just had to fit the pretentious continental stereotype, quoting my friend (Sartre's godson) quoting Sartre saying "There is no god, but our job in life is to find him." So, let's hope there are no theists in the adcom.... Of a Catholic institution...

All the people in this thread talking about their long-term relationships... Keep rubbing it in, guys. For me, location and fit are more important than ranking, at this point. My whole life, I've heard how important prestige is to getting ahead, etc. etc. But I got this far going to a public university that's just half a step "up" from a community college, and I feel great about it. Plus, it's all about what you publish, and I want to be around people who aren't gonna be like, "Ew, that's not rigorous enough." or something if I decide to use The Cloud of Unknowing and Gerard Manley Hopkins in a paper. Location is really important because I'm all on that Socrates thing. You know, in the Phaedrus when Phaedrus is like, Socrates, come to the babbling brook with me (or whatever), and Socrates says something like, "I really prefer doing my philosophizing in Athens. Trees can't teach me what people can." Or something. I feel that way about big cities (NYC in particular). It's not like I haven't been abroad for large chunks of time, but I feed off of this city in an unhealthy way. Plus, 24/7 public transportation and $$ reasons are making me want to stay.

Who is your favorite philosopher? What was your favorite reading?

To those answering "Plato": -

Plato, for sure. And then Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger. Besides these, my favorite text to read has been Buber's I and Thou. My favorite Plato is the seventh letter (if it's taken to be Plato's), and if not the seventh letter, a tie between the Republic and the Phaedrus. -
I'll believe any theory at this point which allows room for me to still have a chance.

I wouldn't bank on outright rejections just yet. Someone a few days ago said that those who hadn't heard back from Fordham were probably rejected, and I didn't really believe it. Today I got the waitlist letter. I read some stuff on the blog you have in your profile. Is that yours?
-
Thanks, bro. It's good to know there are thoughtful men in our discipline, although I never doubted it.
-
I saw that someone put a Toronto rejection up. I'm wondering if anyone else has heard. My app still says it's under review.

I hope we have the same magic powers. The silence after you answer a question and you wonder whether skype lags. And it's probably the normal amount of time one waits until one begins talking, but in these circumstances it feels like a million hours. Congratulations, though. You deserve it!

Oh god. I don't even know if I said words and I may have insulted the entire Catholic Church. Oh god.

Yes! It's happening in 4 minutes

Guys. I have an interview in a few minutes and I'm about to pass out from anxiety. First of all, I hate interviews. Secondly, I hate Skype. So a Skype interview has me about to die. What are they gonna ask me, even? Idk idk help pls. Someone pretend to be me.

I would REALLY love to stay in NYC. I have a lot of financial reasons to want to stay, and a lot of personal reasons. Mostly, the fact that NYC is the greatest place ever.
