  1. The University of Alabama has a good biomedical anthropology program, and they fund almost all of their MA & PhD students!
  2. i actually just heard from them today that there's a spot open if i wanted it, but i already accepted somewhere else. so there's still hope!! if you haven't heard back yet you might be on the waitlist
  3. I'm on the top of their MA waitlist apparently. I heard on the 14th I think
  4. It's offical! I haven't even heard back from NYU and Oxford yet, but I've just decided to accept my offer from Alabama anyway. There was only a very small chance any other institution would be able to match the amount of funding they gave for an MA, and I get along really well with the faculty and my research interests work really well with them as well. Yay!!
  5. well i've almost officially made my decision! Unless Oxford suddenly accepts me or NYU gives me a whole bunch of funding, I'm most likely staying at Alabama for another two years!! It's hard to turn down the amazing funding offer they gave me, and I love the department and faculty so much. yippee!! can't wait to officially make my choice once NYU gets back to me next weekend
  6. I might be a little biased (current undergrad student at Alabama who's probably staying for a MA), but Alabama's department is incredible. The faculty are all really wonderful and supportive, and they are definitely interested in publishing a ton with their students. The grad students I know (which at this point is most of them) all really love the department and the cohorts are all very close. If you have any questions about specific faculty members or the department or school in general, feel free to PM me!!
  7. is anyone from the UK and knows anything about how strong Edinburgh's MSc program in Forensic Anthro is? I've been accepted but I'm wary to put down the 500 pound deposit to be considered for funding without knowing much about how good the program is. I'm relatively clueless about UK schools. I like what I know about the program so far, but I want to make sure I'm not going to waste the 500 pound deposity
  8. I was walking out my door, heading to class, when I checked my email one last time. Saw an email saying "decision available to view". I immediately ran back inside, leaving the door wide open, dumped my backpack out onto my bed, grabbed my laptop, and checked the portal. My hands were shaking so bad I almost couldn't type my password! And I saw "accepted" on my letter and I started sobbing and called my mom, who thought something terrible must have happened. It was an emotional moment for me, if you couldn't tell. My dreams were validated!!!
  9. Thanks!!!! I'll be celebrating tonight at an early Galentine's day party with all my friends. Perfect timing basically!!
  10. I GOT INTO MY FIRST PHD PROGRAM!!! I only applied to two PhD versus eight MA's because I wasn't sure if I was competitive enough yet BUT APPARENTLY I AM. holy crap going to class today is going to be hard when I just want to CELEBRATE
  11. I've gotten my first PhD acceptance!!!!! Oh my gosh! I only applied to two PhD programs and eight MA's because I wasn't sure if I would be competitive enough for PhD programs yet but I guess I am!! Ahhhh this is a great day
  12. welp my university is officially under tornado watch for the night. I'm torn between hoping the power goes out so I am forced to stop obsessively checking my email and hoping the power doesn't go out because I think i'd die of anxiety. Ugh!!
  13. Thanks!! You make a really good point, both about funding and leaving with a master's if it's too much. I didn't even think about that!
  14. something about that rejection quote just reminded me oh Holes with the "old, psychic woman" i just jump straight to madame zeroni
  15. so the chair of the graduate admissions committee for a school i applied to for an MA just emailed me encouraging me to try to change my application to a PhD instead even though it's past the application deadline.... I don't know whether to be flattered or scared. He said he was reading over my app and thinks I should try for the PhD. It's nice that he thinks I should try to be admitted for the PhD instead but a PhD is so much commitment!! idk it feels a little scary. none the less, I changed my application to PhD! (for that particular program at least). It's something I know I want to achieve at some point, but I'm not sure if I'm totally prepared yet.
  16. Ignore me, sorry, I'm dying. Crushed by an avalanche of rejection notifications. . .Oh my God, just like that old, psychic woman said. Ohio State Creative Writing MFA rejection anyone remember the book/movie Holes?
  17. So I got accepted to one program with an awesome funding package, merit award, and a PI who is really awesome and does a lot of cool stuff. It sucks waiting to hear back from everywhere else now, because all of my friends/family don't understand that just because I got accepted, I haven't already made my decision. Everyone has just assumed I'll be going to the school I've been accepted to, and that I should just forget about the 9 other schools I'm waiting to hear from. And while I LOVE the school I've been accepted to and the funding for a Master's is amazing and I would be able to do so much interesting research there... I still want to see what happens!! ugh. waiting sucks.
  18. I'm going crazy waiting. All of my applications are in, and I'm just waiting on my last professor to submit recs. I had two due on December 15th that are still waiting on his rec (well actually, he just submitted a rec for one of them this morning). I've been freaking out about his rec because he wasn't responding to my emails and the letters were almost a month late, but I'm just assuming he misread my emails and thought the due date was January 15th and not December 15th. I'm just waiting for him to submit the rest so I can breathe easy and be slightly less nervous. Can't wait until it's all over though
  19. I'm not 100% sure really but I really enjoy working with human remains (I've worked with Native American remains for the past two semesters that come from a nearby site) and it's just so much find re-articulating skeletons and identifying pathologies. I want to possibly work somewhere in South America and do some sort of analysis of remains across geographic areas using ArcGIS. I don't have any concrete ideas of what I want to do, which is why I'm applying mainly to Master's programs right now. I know I don't want to stay in academia forever though, so I'm trying to find programs that are more applied and can give me a better chance of finding a "real" job as opposed to just becoming a professor or researcher.
  20. I'm applying to Penn State, NYU, SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton, Oxford, Edinburgh, American, USF, Mercyhurst, and Alabama!
  21. oooooh cool! environmental anthropology sounds really interesting... I interned at an environmental consulting company over the summer, but I mainly just messed around on ArcGIS and made project maps, so I didn't really get to do any real "environmental" stuff
  22. Hey! I think we talked on /r/gradadmission too! I totally get how it feels to be terrified of rejection and convincing yourself that you aren't worthy and won't get accepted anywhere. Take some time to really relax (especially because you've already finished most of your apps!) and reflect on how far you've come and all the great things you've done so far and how passionate you are about anthropology. I have confidence in you I'm sure in the next couple months you'll be posting here about your acceptances! What type of anthropology programs are you applying to? (bio, cultural, etc)
