Hi Hemmelig, congrats on your UofC offer! It's good to know that you will definitely be going somewhere for your PhD in September. I have only applied to two and haven't heard back from either of them. Like you I am really hoping to hear back from UBC asap (I also applied to UVic but their official deadline isn't until the 15th!), just so I know...this drawn-out waiting game is driving me mental... I am applying to Educational Studies rather than Language and Literacy Studies at UBC, and did contact one of the profs before I submitted my application. In fact I only submitted my applications to schools where I managed to secure faculty support. I hope I have made a good enough impression during our Skype session prior to my application... Judging from the results of the past years UBC Education seems to release their results the first two weeks of March, so I guess it is quite likely that you will be informed of their decisions before your UofC deadline. Will you consider mentioning that to the POI during the interview? Sure at this point if they wanna talk to you it will be because they have decided you are a competitive candidate, and the interview is the last step for the POI to decide if she would like to work with you? Funding will be my main consideration as well (if I got an offers at all ). Do you mind if I ask what your area of interest is? It may sound very strange but I applied to Language and Literarcy at UVic. They don't divide the areas quite the same way as UBC and my research interest is a mix of policy and curriculum, so I just go with the profs that I would like to work with. I wish I was as certain as you are when it comes to which school is my first choice. I really have no idea which one I prefer. I would like to the reputation of UBC but I would also quite like to study in a smaller department where it's easier to get to know people. Sounds silly though, as UBC is ranked so much more highly world wide (first 50) while UVic is in the 200-250 range... Anyways good luck with the interview!!! If you don't mind me being cheeky, please keep me posted on how things go. Sending you good vibes!

Hi, Just saw an update on the result page re. an interview with the language and literacy studies (phd) at UBC. Just wanna see if interviews are common. I am applying to EDST and needless to say...no news yet... Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for your post!! It's good to meet other people who are in similar circumstance. I'm actually not sure about state assistance--I'm not a Canadian and am applying as an international student. My final decision would have to base on the funding packages the unis (hopefully) would offer, if I got admitted at all. But like many profs that I have spoken to, both old profs that have taught me and profs that I spoke to in the schools that I am applying to, I am always gonna lose money by enrolling into a PhD programme. It would be a gamble for us all really--there is no way i can tell if my husband will be able to get a job. But he is very encouraging and is willing to take the risk...we would just have to see how things turn out, once again, if I got admitted... How old is your little one? When you apply is there anything in particular that you ask the unis of your choice about? I realise I probably should be asking questions regarding family support but I am not sure what to ask yet...

Hi, Just wanna see if there are anyone out there who are applying for/have gotten into grad school with family/children in tow? I am a mother of one and decided to give grad school a go. I haven't heard back from any schools yet (I have only applied to Canadian schools), but would like to have a chat with people who are in similar situation, and hopefully we could gather a group of people here who can swap info and thoughts here? Cheers.

Hey thanks for your reply, Cayella! I didn't really look carefully at the number of years of experience required when I checked out the programmes, but I remember seeing mostly 2-3 years of experience? Hope it works out for you! I do understand your quandary over the references--I ended up having only professional references for my applications because I had graduated for over a decade, and the profs that I stayed in close touch with have either retired or passed away. I emailed the departments concerned and they all said they understood it was hard for students who had graduated for a long time to secure academic references, and they all said professional references would work just fine. I guess for education the nature of application is slightly different? Not that it matters now as you have already submitted your application. But just in case in a few years time you would like to go for a PhD programme

Thanks for the reply and the info, Counterpointer! Yea that's what everybody told me :(. My best friend applied to 8 or 9 PhD programmes last year and only heard back from the Canadian University in April--way after she had heard back from other US schools. And in all fairness UVic deadline isn't until Feb 15. I would be surprised they made any offers in Feb... I was very much aware of the OISE policy as well. When I was making contact with different faculty members regarding my application the OISE profs made it very clear that international students are rarely accepted, which was slightly disheartening for me but I can understand where they are coming from. That was why I completely gave up on applying to schools in Ontario and focussed on getting in touch with faculty members on the west coast. Good luck on doing your teacher's cert! In what area is your expertise???

Hi Cayella, Congrats on your offer from the UK!!! I toyed with the idea of applying to the UK as well but I gave up on that in the end, mainly out of concerns on funding. It's good to have at least one offer lined up--at least you know you will be enrolled into a programme by September. I can totally feel your anxiety--I have become quite obsessed with checking the result page of grad cafe, but it seems to me that very few offers have been made by the faculties of education both in the US and Canada? At the moment I guess no news is good news--at least I haven't been rejected?!?!?!?! I submitted my application back in November, and my references should have reached them by Dec 15. I applied to Educational Studies at UBC, and Curriculum and Instruction at UVic. I personally am not sure which programme I prefer, so I can't really say which programme is my first choice. What made you think UBC is your first choice? Did you make any contact with any faculty members before you submitted your application? You are right--the deadline was Dec 1. Even with the delay due to the winter break I still kinda hope that they would have made up their mind by now. But of course they won't work around my timeline so I can only wait and hope and despair at the same time... It's so good to finally have somebody who are on the same boat to chat with--there are very few threads on applicants of ed programmes, and even fewer on Canadian programmes. Are you applying to Masters of PhD? Anyways so nice to get in touch with you. Best of luck to you (and me)!

Fall 2016 PhD/EdD Literacy and Language Decisions
litzzie replied to travelingfiend's topic in Education Forums
Hey travelingfiend, do you mean UMass? Whatever it is, I am sorry. It sucks to be rejected. I hope there are more good news to follow from other schools. I am becoming increasingly nervous--I have only applied to two Canadian universities. I have been checking the forum and haven't seen a lot of activities of the Canadian schools yet, but then this site is primarily for US schools... Good luck! -
While I am in this agonising, drawn-out waiting game, I thought I would start a post for people who have applied to graduate programmes in Educational Studies. I have applied to two schools in Canada (UBC and UVic, but none in the US). UBC's deadline was on Dec 1 so I am really hoping to hear from them soon. UVic's domestic deadline is not until Feb 15 so it will be a while. Are any of you also waiting for the admission results? Let's get this thread going!

Fall 2016 PhD/EdD Literacy and Language Decisions
litzzie replied to travelingfiend's topic in Education Forums
Hi travelingfiend, I have applied to PhD in Educational Studies (Language and Literacy) as well, but not to the US schools. Just thought I'd say hi and congratulations to your offer! Hope you will hear good news from the rest of them soon! -
Hi, all, Any applicants or grad students of UVic out there (or people from other unis if you also happen to know) who knows what 'Confirmation of Sponsorship' means? I was checking my application status (first thing I do every morning) and saw this new item listed under my required documents. It's listed as a miscellaneous item and the full description is (Let: Confirmation of sponsorship). Any thoughts? I haven't applied for any funding or any kind of sponsor, but I did make contact with a faculty member who agreed to support my app. Thanks, everyone!!! I hope it's a good sign. Argh...so nerve wrecking....

Thanks for starting this thread! I was an English major and got an MPhil in English as well. I have submitted only two applications to universities in Canada, both in Educational Studies. I have been a teacher for over a decade and my work experience has led me to the new discipline where literature, pedagogy and cultural theories come together. Hopefully I will hear some good news by...March??!?! Such a long wait...

Hi guys!!! I realised this thread was from a while ago, but if I may pick up on this thread again and go off on a tangent for a little bit--when did you guys hear back from Uvic? I have submitted my application for PhD in Educational Studies. Would really like to have an idea when I will hear back from them as I will have to coordinate with my husband's job offer...thanks so much!!

Hi, everyone, UBC PhD application deadline is Dec 1 (Educational Studies). When do you think I can expect to hear from them??? Just wanna have an idea...Will it be end of Jan????

How strict are schools about the minimum admission requirement?

Ah that's a very good tip, sjoh197!!! I should hope they won't have an answer for me so soon then @@ Thanks again! -

Thanks, rising_star, for your reply!!! They will accept local applications until Jan 15. Do you think I should email them, say, on Jan 30? Thank you so much! -

Thanks, TakeruK, for your answer once again. Yes the deadline is not until Jan 15 but because I am applying as an international student I had to meet an earlier deadline and I submitted both of my applications before Dec 1. But yes when you put it this way end of Jan is definitely much too early. I will take your advice and email them again to ask them about my chance. Thank you so much!!! -

Thanks, for your reply, Takeruk. The job that my husband is applying to requires him to commit by the end of January. Do you think I should at least try and ask by the end of January? Or it would be quite pointless anyway because if the decision isn't made it isn't made and no point asking? Thanks again! -
Hi, everyone, I have applied to two PhD programmes in universities in BC, both in the Faculty of Education. I have found a prof in each programme who enthusiastically agreed to supervise me if I got admitted. Problem is my Masters grades weren't exactly great--their faculty's minimum is a B+, and I got a B due to chronic health issues. My undergraduate grades, however, were B+, but it's irrelevant now as I am not applying to a Masters programme. I have 13 years of teaching experience. My question is, should I assume that I wouldn't get in because I don't meet the minimum requirements, or should I not rule it out as the profs were so supportive and encouraging? I have to ask because a job came up for my husband and he is very eager to apply, and the time to decide whether to apply is now. The job is in Europe and if he took it I wouldn't be able to start my PhD. He said he would prioritise my PhD so he kinda want an idea on how likely I would get in. On a different but related note, when will I know the results? Thanks in advance, everyone!
