  1. Just got an acceptance to SUNY Binghamton! It was a basic letter from the Graduate School. I emailed the DGS to inquire about funding.
  2. Thank you so much for the info! And best of luck to you wherever you are accepting!
  3. I don't know anything about funding yet. The only thing I do know is I'm number 2 on the waitlist of 7 and that I found out by randomly checking the gradmit website. Good luck! No news is good news, as they say!
  4. I'm waitlisted at SUNY Buffalo and would LOVE to get in off the waitlist, though I am still waiting to hear from a few (amazing) programs.
  5. Finally, something other than a rejection! I'm waitlisted at Buffalo. Mine's the post that got the GRE Verbal and Quantitative mixed up so it looks like I'm super unqualified Good luck to everyone! Don't know whether I should call or not and find out where I am on the list? Thoughts?
  6. I'm currently in an MA program that requires teaching for both years (if you are funded) and I honestly wouldn't trade it for time for my own research. Mostly because if you are planning to stay in Academia, teaching will always be a big part of that and the sooner you get that experience A. the sooner you know if it's for you or not and B. the more you have to put on CV when you apply to PhD programs (at MSU your TA pay rate is determined by your teaching experience; two years of experience bumps you up a rank in pay). In terms of prestige, I really don't have an answer. Being at an R1 all of my PhD friends have said that I will have a better shot with my applications because of the R1 clout, but so far I'm 2/7 with rejections-so who knows!
  7. I also am still waiting for Duke (literature). At this point I'm expecting a rejection, but would love to just get that out of the way.
  8. The Palisades are lovely- I used to dog sit for someone over there, but definitely pricey. It's a good and quiet area though--definitely an older crowd, so if that's something that would make working easier for you it would be a good place to be. I would say the general cost of running errands and entertainment over there is a lot higher though. For example, going to a movie in the Palisades or even in the city (LA proper) would run $15 for just a ticket, whereas in North Hollywood it's $8-$10.There are other expenses that, when informed, you can cut down by hundreds of dollars, making it easier to live in the city or somewhere like the Palisades: namely, groceries; Gelson's, Erewhon, Whole Foods, and Pavilions are some of the MOST expensive grocery stores out there, whereas Ralph's, Von's, Alberton's, and even Trader Joe's are much more reasonable.
  9. Having lived in Los Angeles for three years, if you do choose UCLA, I would recommend living in the Valley. The commute won't be fun, but it is well worth it price-wise and in terms of space and not being surrounded by so many people. I loved living in North Hollywood and it was way way cheaper than the alternatives of the living close to UCLA. Alternatively, Culver City (West Side) wouldn't be a terrible commute, is nice, and more affordable as well. Good luck and congrats!
  10. Me too: My implied rejections thus far are Pitt (film studies), Duke, and possibly Buffalo. Real hard to focus/stay positive with all this hanging over my head :-/
  11. Has anyone been waitlisted in SUNY Buffalo's English program yet? Is there still hope? Also- @pbnwhey, was your acceptance to CU Boulder's English dept? If so, congratulations! And when did you hear from them?
  12. This is my first year going, but I'm really excited. Hoping to get a chance to explore Seattle a bit too!
  13. My department, my college, and the Graduate School all have funding opportunities (totaling about $1000), but I also work for the Journal of Popular Culture which will fund whatever I don't get covered from the other sources since I'll be working some at the conference.
  14. I'm off to the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association National Conference in March. I'll be presenting in the Gender area at the peak time of 8am
  15. Though I applied to the film studies track (English), I still haven't heard a thing, with the exception of a secretary from the wrong track accidentally asking me to fill out a language placement exam over a month ago and then letting me know that the form was accidentally sent to me and others....
  16. I still haven't heard anything from Pitt :-/
  17. Nope- radio silence. I'm going crazy waiting.
  18. I'm pretty much in the same boat with all of my apps. Hang in there! The long wait will end eventually
  19. I, too, haven't heard a single thing from Brown. @cikkatikkaskwarr, for Pittsburgh did you apply through the English department? Brown and Pitt are the only film programs I've applied to- the rest of my apps are in English departments.
  20. I'm wondering the same thing! Thanks!
