  1. Thanks! And yes, they actually *still* don't have all of the financial aid info up yet. I'm expecting to get federal work study as well which I am hoping to put towards a research assistant position. I'm estimating that ~2/3 of my program costs should be covered which makes me REALLY happy. The cost of living in NYC is more than enough to worry about. I had heard that TC was not generous with funding MA students so this was better than expected.
  2. Congrats to everyone who got in! I received admission to the Philosophy and Education MA program on Feb 3 (applied a little early) but didn't get my scholarship package until today. ~19K/year. I'm so happy! This was my top choice program and I wasn't sure how much of a scholarship to expect. I will probably be attending. Anyone else get into this program?
  3. Just to follow up on my previous post. I got into my top choice program at Columbia TC with 19K funding for the first year. Very pleased and the answer is yes: it is possible to get into a competitive grad. program with only narrative grades.
  4. Gre question: Which score should I report??? Most of my programs allow you to report two scores but the UCSB M.ED asks you to report only one score! The problem is I don't know which score would be considered "better" for this program. 1) V: 167 (97%) Q 151 (45%) AW 5 (93%) 2) V: 167 (97%) Q 155 (60%) AW 4 (56%) The first time I took the test I scored above 90th percentile in both writing and verbal, but below the 50th percentile in math. The 2nd time I improved my quant score significantly but messed up the essay so my scores in both are middling. My program is not really a math heavy program (social and cultural studies in education) but I'm worried that a below 50% could look really bad, on the other hand the first set of scores might make more of an impression because of the two sections above 90th percentile. What do folks think? Which score should I report? Thanks!

  6. Something more like this: We blame mentally ill individuals for their lack of strength or their lack of resilience but forget that those who live with mental distress are some of the strongest people in our society. Through my [professional/scholarly/volunteer] work doing ____, _____, and _____ as well as my own personal mental health struggles I have learned to be less judgmental and more empathetic. My interest in counseling grows out of my desire to look for causes rather than labels and my belief that those who are struggling with mental disorders are often those with most to teach others. I find great satisfaction in knowing that I might be able to help someone when they are hurting and help them see their own strength and power.
  7. I have read that it is a huge red flag to admissions committees (kiss of death) to say that your interest in the field of psychology comes from your own psychological traumas. If you do choose to mention it be aware that it is a very tricky line to walk—mention it in passing but don't go into it in detail as you have here.
  8. Hi folks, I tried to start this on another thread but didn't get much of a response so I'll try here. I'm applying to the Philosophy and Education MA program at Columbia's Teachers College this round. I am curious who else is applying to this program and to other programs in the humanities department (History and Education, Anthropology and Education, Applied Linguistics, etc) at TC. What are your stats (GPA, GRE, undergrad major, work experience, etc)? Where else are you applying?
