Seems like I'm not the only one who's been completely pummelled this week. The only glimpse of a silver lining happened just this afternoon, when a classmate told me about a PhD friend of hers who had gotten rejected from a bunch of English jobs. She said, and I quote, that there had been "800 applicants for a single job opening". I laughed and laughed and laughed. Hey, if I don't get in to a PhD program, then I'll never have to worry about the phenomenonally crappy academic job market, am I right??? So what's your "glass half full"? Let's cheer ourselves up, people!

Hahaha, thank you for this thread. I needed it! My contribution: Luckily, I'm not applying for graphic design programs.

I saw this on the results board from yesterday re: English PhD: So, we have no reason to hold out a sliver of hope, right? Adding another notch in my "implicit rejections" belt. :\

Thanks for asking about this. I wonder when this means we'll hear about PhD results. Maybe they'll get delivered by the Easter Bunny? ; ) -

I hope you do too, lolopixie! And I hope I find out I'm going anywhere but in this hellhole of rejection (official and implicit) that I've been living in. I want to feel the sun of hope on my face and the wind of future scholarly greatness in my hair! But, really, I'd just settle for a single (funded) acceptance and a new bottle of Makers. It's been a supercraptastic week. Glug glug. -

Dear self: Drunk posting to grad cafe? Really?? The things this process drives us to... How are my other 0%'s holding up today? This. It's like vinegar in the wound. (I forked over three months' rent to feel like this?) -
Bless you for your results board research and optimism, joega. : ) Trying to not to let myself cling to a sliver of hope and just let this one go as a wash. We'll see. Congrats again to you and the others accepted. I hope the funding situation works out for you all. I know that was one of the things I was worried about re: Berkeley.

I'm currently postponing my cryfest in lieu of drinking lots of bourbon with new acquaintances (and people who've survived this process and gotten their PhDs) at a conference. They've been consoling me with their own eventual success stories. Rejection, schmection. Bourbon cures all! \O/ -
Thanks for sharing the details, bigrelief, and congrats on your acceptance. : ) Seeing 10 acceptances just on the results board here makes me believe that they're done accepting. Ah, well. Reality is that, although it was my dream school, there are other schools that are a better fit for my specific interests. Hopefully I'll be over that (10 year) dream by the time I have several strong drinks tonight wake up tomorrow!

Wait, does this mean they're still notifying? Joega1111, did they mention number of admits in your email? Would love for my my California dreamin' to not TOTALLY be obliterated by UCLA and Stanford this week. : )

Ditto, lolo. And I'm at a big conference so that would be...embarrassing. :| Congrats, @TripWillis and @marlowe! Glad you got good news. -
At this point I'm hoping we DON'T hear from USC this week. My cup of (assumed) rejections runneth over already. For what it's worth, I have Michigan's American Culture program also notifying this week last year. Anyone else apply there?

Hello, my home for the rest of forever. This week I'm 0/3 (apparently) and, oh, look at that -- they were my top three choices. Anyone else regretting even applying? I feel like it was a stupid, foolish dream that I'm only waking up from now. -
Congrats to those of you who got in. Did your letters say anything about the cohort size? And was it an email to check the website or an email from DGS/POI?

Way to go, Timshel, bdon, and the other recent admits!! Fingers crossed that this trend continues and this week/month brings good news to all of us. How are my other limbo applicants coping right now? I'm off to a conference today, hoping that nerding out on pop culture and scifi stuff will take my mind off of this torturous process. I'll be trying not to check the boards too much while I'm there, but my "smart" phone may lead to some dumb obsessive results stalking. ; ) -
Mainly American lit, 19th & 20th cent -- especially California and Western lit. You? Hahaha, that was me. I totally forgot I'd learned that when I called the dept about something else. : )

Congrats, @bdon and @vordhos!! Agreed! Now let's just hope it trickles down to the rest of us still in purgatory... : ) -
Awesome!!! Congrats, cquin! You did it!

Yay! Congrats, bdon! HAHAHAHAHA. This is my favorite (and the most accurate!) grad cafe comment ever. -

Haha, that's a nice oblique way to seque into the 100% Confidence club. Congrats on your acceptance to Buffalo! Did I write this in my sleep? Because seriously. Exactly my thought process (and I also applied to 12). What country would you want to go to if you had your choice? I've already been investigating quarantine requirements for my pup in case we have to flee... -
Congrats, @royo0210! That's awesome. I'm hoping they're not done with the admits yet since it seems like last year it dragged out for at least a few days. I know, I know, hope springs eternal. :|

I'm also waiting to hear from UCLA. Top choice! Although this week seems to be off to a terrible start for my California schools, so maybe I'm okay waiting for UCLA... Are you applying for English PhD or a MFA?
-
Still no word from USC, huh?
-
One is enough to burst that teeny tiny bubble of hope for me.

Cue the "wah wah wahhhhh"... Yup. I can tell this week's gonna be a doozy already. Berkeley AND Stanford in one day???
