  1. Yeah... I thought I would regret not applying to lower-tier ones, but instead I'm regretting not applying to the Princetons and the Harvards. Oh well, that's a good problem
  2. I have my mind set on Cornell <3
  3. Lol, right? Look at us pretending that we'll have time to spend outdoors
  4. And to San Diego nonetheless! I mean if that isn't the definition of a paid vacation, I don't know what is
  5. Today I set out to decline the offers from 10 schools... I could only figure out how to decline the offers from 2 of them. I can't believe they thought I was good enough to offer me a position
  6. How would it be too late? It would've been strange to email them as soon as you got put on the waitlist... now you have something meaningful to say/ask.
  7. Wow! Congrats!!
  8. Congratulations!!!
  9. I second this thought. For some reason, knowing that grad school will be hell for me just gets me kind of depressed, and I also have hundreds of papers (well... lab reports) to grade. Sunday night I went clothes shopping, last night I made pizza... tonight I'm watching "How I Met Your Mother" before I go to bed. Strange how something so small can increase your happiness so much. One thing that also works is buying stuff online to have something to look forward to. Seriously, buy a fancy pen, a pack of stickers, some chocolate-covered cherries... something. On that note, don't forget to use up your free 6-month Amazon Prime trial before your current .edu address expires
  10. Oh really? I didn't know that. You just saved my butt But now I'll feel bad if I don't get it! Bah!
  11. I actually kind of screwed up by applying for the GRFP as an undergrad... I'm hoping I don't get it. I got a fellowship at Cornell which I can only use my first year, and if I get the GRFP that fellowship money will be wasted. I'd much rather get it during my first year of grad school.. Fortunately, I screwed up that GRFP application so badly, the judges will be laughing all the way until June
  12. I'm going to echo the earlier post... how the hell did you not get into at least one of those schools? Ah, well... you may just have to scope out http://www.gradschoolshopper.com/gradschool/browseby.jsp?q=1&cid=3 It's a list of universities sorted by admissions deadline. Some of them such as IUPUI (Indiana University, Purdue University Indianapolis), University of Texas - San Antonio, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, U Illinois Chicago, U Central Florida, etc. are actually pretty good schools that don't have their deadline until March or later.
  13. Unfortunately, offers from other schools do play a role in the admissions process. I have had a school ask me not only where I have offers from, but how much they were for (I later got a better offer from them). At this point, you obviously won't lie (since universities talk... more than we think), just be honest.
  14. I'm kind of jealous. I really wish I could rock a hairstyle like that. You really pull it off! Not so much on the UMich visit. Sorry!
  15. That sounds super neat!! I'm curious... how long does it take to make that kind of analysis?
  16. Oh, naw... we do theory. So just lots of writing equations on the whiteboard and programming. And awwww... thanks <3
  17. Well, right now we're doing a pretty cool project. You know how if you have a positive charge (say, a proton) and a negative charge (say, an electron), they'll attract each other? That happens because the two particles exchange photons (which are basically particles of light), so they can "feel" each other. So we're studying how that happens if we limit them to exchanging only one or two photons, and looking at how their energies and such change. It's purdy neat if I may say so myself Dang... I wish that we could all share the cool research stuff we're working on. I've always loved learning stuff from other fields. Also @FoxAndChicken WHY ARE YOU SO BEAUTIFUL?! I LOVE the hair!!
  18. I wish They do theoretical astrophysics, I do atomic physics sadly. BUT all of the physics they do on the show is based off recent discoveries. For instance, the whole "viscosity of the universe" thought was based off research done at the University of Nebraska, and the stuff they wrote on their white board was from the recently-published paper. Can confirm I have the social skills of Sheldon though
  19. hahaha!! Yes I love that show so much!! You too? As far as prestige, I'm not sure. That's me I do highly recommend being a female. I'd rate it 10/10 everyday except for about 3-4 days a month, where it's only a 5/10. Also... today I was nominated for the "Idiot of the Year" award. I left my car window down overnight, and someone stole a bunch of stuff. Fortunately it came out to only be a bit over $30 value which is good. Good thing they didn't think to open the trunk, where all of my telescope accessories (hundreds of dollars worth) were.
  20. Oh, I wouldn't be working with him I'm quite sure. I don't know who I'd be working with... I think he is somewhere on the admissions committee which is why he's the one that e-mailed me. We'll see I sort of decided on Cornell because Boulder is #1 in atomic/optical physics (which is what I applied for) but I really also like the idea of condensed matter pphysics at Cornell. I don't know...
  21. Guys... I know this is the biggest "first world problem" that the world has ever seen, but... I really have my mind set on Cornell, but a professor e-mailed me from Boulder offering me more money via fellowship. But that's not even the good part. He gave me his personal cell number and said he'll be calling me in a few days. The name sounded familiar.... because he won the NOBEL F*CKING PRIZE. And so, for the fourth time this month, I'm going to look over my application materials and see if I accidentally lied somewhere!
  22. Sorry for not responding!! I'm not a wine person, so I must place this beautiful duty in the hands of someone more qualified.
  23. I regret that I only have but one positive reputation point to give to this post.
  24. Yeah, for me it was UIUC. Didn't hear anything, not accepted or rejected or waitlisted when I saw plenty of results on the board for all 3. Then I got an acceptance like a month later
