  1. I just e-mailed the POI from my top school (that I was accepted to). I spelled his name wrong
  2. Hahaha! I once was adventurous on Lake Michigan... I ended up stranded in the lake in an inflatable dinghy for ~16 hours and the Coast Guard had to come save me. I stay away from lakes now
  3. Congratulations!!! Beer and popcorn though?!
  4. Yeah... maybe this will happen to one in every 100,000 roommates. Of all the things to worry about, this isn't one of them
  5. Wait... WHAT?!?! Please tell me you got the police involved. Also, the last one... are we roommates?
  6. I had three roommates that summer, and none of them had ever lived on their own before (summer internship = no roommate choices). This girl was from India, and her family had servants, so she didn't know how to do basic cleaning. It was an interesting summer...
  7. Hahaha! I mean, I can understand the battery part... I wouldn't know how. But that he's about to get his PhD in EE is just hilarious!! Also I'm a girl, so I'm not expected by society to know how to do pretty much anything I just wish that I had the patience to live with other people. And in graduate school, I'm going to need to preserve every bit of sanity that I can. I found a cheap apartment but housing goes fast there, so I may have to drive there some weekday (16 hours one way, yay) since the apartment place isn't open on weekends (grrrr!).
  8. I'm fortunate... some of my roommates were pretty clean, and quiet for the most part. Although I did have to teach a roommate once how to use the vacuum. Not that she ever did... but it's the thought that counts. Oh, and one left the gas for the stove on all day. Thanks, I didn't want to live anyway.
  9. It's like you summed up my life right there. Cheers. @nevermind I don't know what it is. In the past couple of years, I've had probably 8-9 different roommates. They weren't bad roommates or bad people, in fact some of them are still great friends. I just cannot unwind in a space that isn't my own (even when I've had my own bedroom); so I'd end up turning a corner of my room into a "kitchen" and holding my bladder until my roommate left. I wish I weren't this way, it'd save me a lot of money!
  10. I know, right? Checking your e-mail 30,000 times a day is so much less romantic than dramatically opening your mailbox after a day at school.
  11. Oh, it's not impossible. I'm just so picky... I would rather live in a box on the street than have a roommate. So it's personal preference, and therefore I probably should not complain.
  12. Agh... what a discouraging day. Today my parents came by and reminded me that living in Boulder will be nearly impossible. Tomorrow my professors will tell me the same thing. I went from Cloud 9 to ground zero
  13. Well, why wouldn't you mention it? My guess is they'll either ask what you're doing right now, or find out via some other method. Maybe don't use it as a bargaining chip though... unless they ask.
  14. @piglet33 A pre-interview Skype? What sort of things will they prep you on?
  15. Best of luck to you! Not that you need it...
  16. Can I just say that after joining this forum I've learned a lot about other programs, and I've definitely learned to be thankful! I can't believe two things: 1) Most programs have interviews? WTF?!?! 2) Some programs, after giving you an offer, apparently require an answer within a few weeks? Again... WTF?!?! In physics, all graduate schools agree that the deadline is April 15.
  17. Yes it is! Like johnny said, the department cannot grant admission, that's only up to the "official" graduate school. But they tell the graduate school who to send an offer letter to, more or less. And that's what they've done I've had this happen a couple times, where they said I've been recommended. A few days later, I got a letter. CONGRATS!!!
  18. My professors are that type. The type that, in the middle of doing a physics calculation, will shout out "Oh! By the way, do you want to see a video of me doing the ice bucket challenge?!"
  19. I think Trump is secretly in cahoots with Hillary... since they're personal friends. "I'll make the Republican party look like such a joke, that even if I'm not the nominee no one will vote for anyone in the party!" Then again, I don't really give a damn. I'll cast my vote for Bernie, sure, but I'm getting sick of this whole thing since 90% of every research meeting I attend is political banter.
  20. I'm sure that there are others in this situation... I have a very, very good offer from a school ranked about ~15 in the nation for what I want to do. I also have an "okay" offer from a place that is very expensive to live, but the school is #1 for what I do. I know who I'd be working with, and I like the professors and their research equally. Thoughts?
  21. What they will think: "Wow! This student is serious enough about his education to apply to many different schools (like everyone else), and is also mature enough that they won't accept the first offer they get." What they won't think: "Wow, he didn't accept our offer 0.00005 seconds after we gave it to him? Fine, we don't want him anyway!"
  22. Just think of it this way... in a few weeks, you'll be hearing back left and right, while the rest of us have no more hope
  23. That would make me terrified. Like others said though, it's possible that he just wants you to be familiar with his research so that the discussion can skip the "would you like my kind of research" and move on to "would you like working with me personality-wise". I'm so, so glad that physics doesn't have interviews, or I would need to bring a change of underwear after each one. Also, I think grad schools are talking. I got admitted to a great school several weeks ago (with no official offer letter) but after getting accepted to Boulder (top choice) yesterday, they've e-mailed me two times saying that I will get an offer this next week, and that it will be extremely attractive (increased stipend + fellowship). I've gone from crying because I don't think I'll get in anywhere, to crying because I can't decide where to go!
  24. @Lexie16 Thank you so much for all the info. I bookmarked that response in my browser I did some research on Wellman Creek... do those apartments tend to go pretty fast? I know I need to act now if I want to find a place, but I also want to hear back from more grad schools first... at what point in the semester is all the housing gone?
  25. Wow... an hour and a half? Sounds like he loves you!!
