Yes... I mean seriously, 5 months?!
-
Hell it was indeed... I've always loved driving long distances by myself, but that was my limit. For. Sure. I never knew HoS folk could apply for the GRFP. Best of luck! Only 2.5 more months
-
@Neist It sounds to me like what you and your adviser did was perfectly justified! But yes, the irrational fears... In October I was applying for the NSF GRFP fellowship and my letters were due the next day, and I hadn't heard from one of my LoR writers (at a uni 1200 miles away). They wouldn't respond to phone calls/emails/anything, so I did the only logical thing. That's right. I left at 6PM that night, and arrived there at 11am the following morning at their office door. All in all, I drove about 2500 miles in 2.5 days, BUT I GOT THE DAMN LETTER. Although, they had also neglected to pay me several thousand dollars that they owed me for working there over the summer, so I went to go get my paycheck as well... which, of course, was mailed to my home address the day I left

Every week or two does not seem unreasonable at all when her not sending it means that you would very likely be rejected everywhere. The exception to that would be if she emailed you back after every reminder to say she would do it within the next week, and then didn't.

Get into Boulder, and then we'll discuss the terms of our agreement further.
-
I'm holding Seattle hostage until I get into Boulder. Sorry!
-
As someone with a very generic name, thank you for giving me a whole new level of fear and anxiety.
-
Sounds like a classic case of "impostor syndrome". Though wouldn't you hate to be the guy that got the wrong interview invite?
-
Thanks! Today was a great day. Got my offer letter from Michigan. As a first-year grad student, I'd be making more than either of my parents
-
You guys keep depressing me about Cornell - it's my top choice (but I don't fit in there, so I'm expecting a rejection). Also... just got an offer from Seattle. Never even been in the area. I wonder if they fly prospective students out for a visit?

I seriously LOL'd. I also stress-eat as some of you have mentioned. However I got a FitBit for Christmas so I'm in a challenge with one of my friends on there to see who can take the most steps each day. It's been helpful to funnel all of my anxiety into pacing around the block instead of laying into a bag of chips. Plus I've lost 5 pounds since the first of the year Unfortunately I also have a sleeping problem, since labs and such haven't really started yet. I don't have class until 3PM, so I keep forcing myself to sleep in until 2PM just so that I wake up, the day will be mostly over so maybe I'll have an admissions offer!

Political Climates at Certain Universities

I've found the "city guide" here on this forum to be quite helpful. Otherwise, a Wikipedia page can tell a lot about cities! I'm from the Bible belt and spent the summer in Boulder, so I went the opposite direction; it's more important than you'd think. -
Not to mention that GPA is majorly affected by which school you go to. I go to a shoddy school and have a 4.0, but anywhere else and I think I'd be a 3.1-3.2 student. In engineering, my GPA would be <2.0 So it's just silly. Fortunately, looking at your signature, you seem to have made it through the first sifting (though I'm not sure how reliable your "assumed rejections" are).

I second this! Seriously though, 22! At least it'll be like a constant party once acceptances come rolling in!
-
I also applied to UIUC! Except I live right down the street, so I can send them Valentine's Day chocolates if they haven't accepted me by then

Hey @raaawr, welcome to the club! We're all in the same boat... If it helps, try to stay off these forums until you hear back, sometimes it can just stress you out. For us here, we're at our maximum stress level so checking the results page everyday can't hurt us

For some reason, my e-mail has ceased pushing to my phone, which means I need to wait until I have computer access during the day to check my e-mails.

I wish that there were some kind of standard to know when to expect an offer. For one of my schools, the application is not due until January 31. Yet I got invited for an interview/visit on December 17, and got an offer today (January 14). Yet I have not heard back from some "safety" schools whose applications were due back in November! Who knows?!
-
@gingin6789 I swear, every program in the world is right now in a conspiracy against us applicants. It seems like the subject of every email contains the word "admissions" or something of the sort. Gah!! And as a side note, I've gotten two offers. One came in at 11PM and one came in at 12:40AM (in their respective time zones). What is it with these people?!
-
Congrats!! That's really neat, and be sure to plaster posters of your talk (make them if they don't exist!) all over the department where you applied I echo this impostor syndrome. This is why I'm glad the places I applied don't do interviews, so I'm not uncovered. But on the other hand, I got an acceptance from the place I did a (horrible, HORRIBLE) interview last week (must've been for a scholarship which I clearly won't get). Woo!

I keep seeing people mentioning their views on LinkedIn and academia.edu... is this normal for a prospective graduate student to have? At least in my field, I've never heard of an undergrad having one... especially since we submit a CV as part of our grad apps.
-
I'll remember... I hope you say end up saying that
-
Also a valid point. I see a lot of people on these forums that only apply to one place... I wonder if that's why.
