  1. Looks like NELC emails for Chicago went out yesterday/today. None for me. Congrats to those who got in!
  2. One of my classmates last year had a non-competitive interview at Hopkins last year. I think it's mainly just to make sure you're not a freak that they don't want to be around for 5+ years. I mean it's "competitive" in the sense that you could throw a stick in your own bike spokes and they could not extend an offer, but much less so than the method used by Notre Dame or Emory.
  3. Some HC peoplw have gotten letters, but I can’t imagine they all have. There are a couple of internal applicants who I would bet anything are getting interviews who haven’t gotten them. I haven’t talked to any Liturgy or MT people who have heard.
  4. Congrats! What specialty?
  5. Red alert, mofos. Notre Dame is sending out letters. If you don't get one immediately, don't necessarily stress. They do it by concentration. I've heard people say they've gotten it 24ish hours later than others.
  6. YO! I just got an email (at 10 PM on a Friday) from Brown to interview for Assyriology and Egyptology. Huzzah!
  7. Two things: 1) I spoke with a PhD student over beers tonight and apparently the professor who will be sending out interview emails for ND has the list of approved applicants in hand. I have no idea when the emails will go out, but things are apparently decided. 2) I got an interview for Brown in Assyriology/Hebrew Bible. Stoked!
  8. It would appear that my professor has made a liar out of me. My sincere apologies for getting anyone's hopes up. However, I would certainly expect them very soon. Several other students have heard likewise.
  9. Totally understandable. I've had to work a second job in addition to TA'ing through both of my (thankfully, funded) Master's programs. Certainly not always fun.
  10. If you don't mind me saying, this is an awesome option. I applied to Notre Dame a couple years ago and was selected for an interview. I went, did well, and was rejected. However, they offered me an MTS spot and I took it. It's a nice spring board into staying at the same school if you can make a good impression.
  11. I applied to Harvard, Hopkins, Brown, Chicago, and UCLA for NELC. I'm so damn nervous.
  12. Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity. They don’t have an actual “biblical studies” concentration so they squeeze some Bible-y early Christianity folks in with us.
  13. I just spoke with a professor with whom I am quite close. He said to expect to hear back from ND this week. This may only be for CJA, but I would imagine it is for all of the non-WRWC applicants. Get stoked!
  14. I was walking out of the building and saw the entire CJA faculty meeting yesterday (minus most of the biblical studies professors, since they're basically all on sabbatical). Even with all of the new hirings and job talk meetings going on, they're usually not all together at once like that. If you applied to ND, I would expect to hear back about PhD interviews sometime relatively soon.
  15. In terms of schools to which you should apply, definitely give Notre Dame a look. We have a wonderful MTS with (from what I understand are) amazing HC faculty. We also have a highly regarded ECS Masters that is independent of the Theology program. Since you already have Latin and Greek, you'll definitely want to focus on other ancient languages within the field. We just hired a professor who will be teaching Coptic, Syriac, and about a dozen other much more highly specialized languages.
  16. From what I’ve heard, they do not interview.
  17. This is likely untrue. WRWC is pretty independent of the other concentrations and their decisions usually go out separately. I know WRWC is a thing but I literally never see any of those folks around. It's basically a different department.
  18. It's still relatively early to hear back from a lot of the Humanities programs out there. Things should start to pick up at the end of January or beginning of February. If you don't mind me asking, to what schools did you apply?
  19. I believe ND's interview notices go out in late January. Like the very end.
  20. Well it would seem that we've all entered the long waiting phase. How is everyone feeling?
  21. I sent the professor a reminder a couple of days ago. There is no "due date" for letters listed on any of my applications. I know he'll do it, but it still makes me anxious! haha.
  22. I've applied to seven programs. Everything is wrapped up and submitted. Two professors have completed all of my recs, my GRE scores are in, I've paid the criminally high prices for PhD apps. But I still have a professor who hasn't even opened the recommendation forms. I don't have a question or anything. But it's lame.
  23. Oh poor summer child. You need to find a place that specializes in Ramen.
  24. I just mean that I think it's likely more for statistical purposes rather than anything than anything pertaining to decision making. I like the program at ND a lot. They have an insane amount of student resources if you're willing to apply for them and the faculty is great. It's weird going here as a non-Catholic, but you get over that. South Bend also isn't a bad town. It's obviously not as big as Chicago or Boston or anything like that, but it's got enough things to do. Your life will be occupied with school anyway so outside attractions aren't all that important.
  25. I work as a TA while completing my MTS but I also have a second job (~12-15 hours a week). It's tough, but it keeps me from having to take out loans. Totally worth it in my opinion.
