  1. Hi All, I am kind of a trespasser, I am not a sociology student. But I am reaching out to this audience for some help. Sorry about that. I hope that is ok! I am from India and I will be joining Baruch College this year for Ph.D. in Business. I could not find a dedicated thread for Baruch College let alone for my major. (side-note: I was reading all the conversations that have happened and it was pretty heartwarming really ) I am a little stressed about matters around accommodation, commuting, and at the feasibility of being able to enjoy a conventional collegiate vibe at Baruch/CUNY. I come with two master's experiences at U of Wisconsin and then at Ohio State U and I really loved the college town feel and atmosphere. I have been hearing that CUNY or Baruch do not really have a "campus", in the conventional sense, and the whole city is your campus. I am a small town person and enjoy small, quaint places. So this idea of not being able to enjoy that in NYC is little uneasy to me. Also, the daily commuting (subway/bus etc.) to get to campus, and having to plan for it as opposed to the other places I mentioned where you could just get up from your apartment and get going to classes (literally walk from one building to other) is also something I am having a tough time getting used to mentally. Don't get me wrong, I am excited about going to CUNY and NYC (was one of my top choices) but these are the lingering concerns nonetheless. The fact that I will be an immigrant from a small town in my country going to a fast-paced ultra chic city does not provide much counteraction either . Is there anyone like me in here (looking for some strength in numbers )? In any case, how are you all managing such thoughts/concerns if at all you have them? Thanks!

Looking to connect with people who are relocating to New York this fall, especially those from India. Thanks!
  3. Hi All -- Can somebody please provide an assessment/review/feedback about this school for Marketing PhD (Consumer Behaviour track). Thanks!
  4. @philisophe, thanks ! Of course I am not going to join university A just to save face... I get your point
  5. Hi Friends, now mine is a tricky situation. I was confused between universities A and B. After much consideration, I chose A over B and accepted A formally on their website but I have not paid the security money yet (to reserve my seat). However between the today and the time I made the acceptance of A, much information (read compelling reasons) have come to light which make me want to go for B now ! (Yes, this time I am sure ) I am pretty sure that though I had said 'yes' to university A, they would not have reserved my seat just going by my mail confirmation (that is the whole point of the security deposit right ). But still, I am kind of embarrassed now to go back to them to renege on my affirmation. Can someone suggest a way out of this please !
  6. is there one for UT Austin ?
  7. Yes...to be candid, I am personally not very excited about this prospect. There is not one overwhelming thing about this offer except for the UW's brand name. (your point about the blood-freezing temperatures included) I have considered the idea of doing masters in my country and have reasonably dismissed it too. I am real desperate for other admits ! Thanks monocle !
  8. @Monocle, like most masters, the Wisconsin one is also a cash-feeder for their PhD students.(and for the school in general) I have done MBA from a tier 1 college of my home country and I have also worked for a US bank for close to 3 yrs now. (in my home country) I have applied to couple of more univs. Got a reject from Duke. UT Austin is awaited. Have applied to UBC, Queen's and U of Toronto from Canada. Results are awaited. Also, I know of at least one current student who has gotten a job with a coveted consultancy in DC. I suppose she did her internship there and then was offered a full-time. But I also believe that she was probably the best of her batch (you know, the good things that happen to outliers.. that kind of story) But If I did decide to go for PhD after this, would this prospect look worthwhile then ? Thanks!
  9. Thanks iloveOM! I am not an undergrad. In fact, this would be my 2nd master's (but first in the field of economics hence I am unsure/inexperienced about wanting to do PhD). Come on guys... deadline for accepting this offer is just round the corner. Desperately need some valuable inputs on this. Also, some people have opined that Wisconsin is like in the middle of nowhere so not very conducive from jobs perspective (as compared to a NYC or Boston etc.) But I am thinking, should geography be that big a factor of consideration ?? I mean.. people can always travel right ? ( may look like a simpleton here) Thanks !
  10. I have applied to the MA econ at UBC. I (and I presume everyone else) got a mail saying that results will be declared from Mid- march to early may period.
  11. Hi All, I have got an admit from UW's MS Econ program. Total cost of attendance might come to a mind-numbing $100K. No scholarships. No RA/TA offered. I am not sure about wanting to do PhD afterwards and would most likely want a job. But I do not have clarity on what kind of jobs graduates of such a program might get, let alone idea about salary figures. I just remember somebody mentioning in passing that salaries could be anywhere between 65K-80K....90K tops... With an investment of that kind and a not-so-stellar return, I am developing my reservations about accepting the offer. Can somebody please help me in this dilemma. Thanks !
