  1. Thanks! I can't believe I went from 5 rejections to 2,5 acceptances! (ok, and 6,5 rejections, but whatever :P). Declining the other offer was so hard, my PoI was just great. This was the biggest luxury problem I've ever had.

By the way, today there was this item on the news (here, in the Netherlands!) about an American kid who applied at 20 schools and got admitted into all of them. I literally cried when I saw the video they made of his first acceptance.

  2. See if there are Facebook groups about local housing. I found my place (a private room in a shared house) through one of thise 'housing in XX' groups. I talked to my roommates on FB, then we skyped, and then we made the decision about when I could move in. I also contacted some local housing agencies that some of the other grad students in my department rent from, and the department also has a mailing list for rad student housing.

Hey! I'm going to be attending WSU too. I'm moving with my SO, so we're looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apt somewhere close, hopefully no roommates. We're moving from Maine, so it's gonna be quite a hike for us to get out there... But it looks like Pullman is much more affordable than where we are (Portland ME). I'm visiting this week, so I'm hoping to get a good feel for places to look, what rental companies to avoid, etc while I'm out there.

Congratulations! I have been scouting Craigslist and FB for a couple of weeks now, but no luck yet. You dont happen to be looking for a very cool Dutch roomate, by aby chance? Because I've got one of those available ;)

  4. Excellent topic, I have been thinking about this ever since I got my acceptance letter. I'm moving from Europe to the US and thankfully to an area with a similar climate, so most of my clothes will be useful there. I'm moving in the summer so I was thinking of buying an extra suitcase so I can fit most of my summer stuff in them. I'll ask my parents to send my winter stuff once I've moved. This is also a good time to really sort out all my stuff and decide what I am still wearing and what is just chilling in my closet for whatever reason.

My real concern are my 'luxury items' like shoes and handbags, it might be a bit ridiculous to send 10 pairs of almost similar brown boots and 3 pink handbags to the US, but then again, kids often look alike and you don't get rid of them for that reason, right? I don't think I'll be bringing any linnens, apart from a travel towl and a small sleaping bag, and my special anti-allergy pillow cases. Oh and all my make-up, conditioners, nail polish, etc.

@EvelynD I would think just a general outline of your progression in fieldwork and research, like “I plan to apply for field research grants and work in the field every summer for 2 months; initial field research would allow me to decide the best field setting and build rapport”. Something like that? Obviously a little more formal, haha, but that is the best I can think of.

Thanks! Thats really helpful. I'll mix it up with what I've seen in the handbook!

  6. So for one of my SoP's I have to provide an anticipated timeline. Does anyone mean what they mean by that? There is already a clear timeline in the graduate handbook so I wonder what they want me to add. My PoI is working in the field right now and he won't be back before the deadline.

@GreenEyedTrombonist I've long succumbed to checking the results page multiple times a day... I know the earliest I would hear back is mid-January, but it doesn't stop me in the slightest.

The only thing distracting me from all of this is HQ Trivia, online shopping, and eating like a kid in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Hahahaha, mine is binge watching the X-files in preparation for the new season, and trying to keep my house clean. Only one of those two things is working...

@EvelynD yeah I understand. I typically look at the courses too. Some of the schools that I applied to I had to frame my statement in how my POIs interest in “d” fits with my interest in “g”. I think each time I came back to theoretical alignment than geographical at some schools.

I took your advice and found a super cool school I actually have a great fit with. Thanks!

Best of luck, all. It just figures that the schools I'm most looking to hear from seem to send their notifications out in very late February/early March!

Me too I guess, and I'm not even going to make the same mistake as last year and check the results page. I'm just going to wait untill I get email,s or notifications from app acounts.

  10. Its just that I'm not sure how strong the fit should be. One school is specialized in my general geographical region, but there isn't a theoretical fit. One school kinda shares my thematical focus on environmental anthropology and my geographical region, but when I look at their cources I'm missing certain things. I don't want to spend money on schools that I think would have better matching applicants, but like you said I do wanna cast a wide net. Pfff :P

  11. I am freaking out for no special reason...I just checked the results page (so dumb, imo this only makes me geel worse) and one of my fav schools is already sending out acceptances for other departments. The departmental deadline is in january but the graduate school deadline was in november. I know results for anthro are not related to other departments, but still!

I believe in you @EvelynD ! My recurring dreams involve cutting my hair...

Nooo,, don't do it!! The other day I woke up super happy, and halfway through my way to work I realised it was all fake :P

I don't want Januari to be here, I remember being rejected 4 times last year so well that I almost prefer living in this Schrodingers application limbo forever.

@EvelynD I mean, yeah, don't get me wrong, I never said I was good at taking my own advice. Do as I say, not as I do (this post can be re-titled the World Wide Wine Club of Stress cause I'd imagine you and I can't be the only ones drowning our sorrows in wine)

This made me laugh out loud at work :P

Yeah and chocolate too, Im so not stepping on the scale right now! I did quit smoking a couple of weeks ago! Now Im chewing gum like crazy.
