A majority of my waitlists have been just that, actually. Maybe it's just the schools I applied to, but not one informed me that they placed me on the waitlist; they all asked me if I would like to be considered for their waitlist or not. Once again, maybe other schools have different wording, but I don't think you should feel any less confident in this waitlist just because they asked if you were interested or not. Good luck

Instead of getting all suspicious, why don't you call the office back, say you spoke to someone about a possible acceptance but didn't catch their name, and say you were wondering if you could be put in touch with them again because you have a few more questions. That should tell you if it's a (very weird) scam or for real. If you get a person on the line, ask questions about a stipend, required courses, or anything else that comes to mind. 
I'd say this isn't exactly common but probably isn't unheard of. And speaking to university profs (less so, admins) on their private cell phones about official university business is definitely something that's happened to me. 

Some times they just want to keep the waitlist short so they don't waste time contacting those who already accepted offers from a different school.

I think it's common.  I saw a friend's waitlist notification that was worded along the lines of "Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate for additional students at this time, but we would like to offer acceptance should sufficient space become available.  Please email so-and-so by some-date regarding whether or not you would like to opt in to the waitlist."

Well, I gave up all hope weeks ago, but I just got the call from Iona today!!! I was accepted and I couldn't be happier or more relieved! This goes to show: never give up, it isn't over until it's over!

Isn't that essentially what a waitlist is? There's no room in a cohort so you're on the waitlist until a spot opens up?

Some schools don't use the GPA on CSDCAS. The only real answer is you won't know until you apply.  Write about it in your SOP and how you grew from that set back.  At the end of the day, it's all up to the admissions committee.  Good luck!

Accepted off the wait list at the University of Pittsburgh and accepting the offer! I'm so excited!

Well I was accepted into my back up plan 14 months masters degree, so I will be in school still for another year and then probably work in that field for a year or so before reapplying. All my schools were actually on the less competitive end, and most people from my university actually didn't get in anywhere (not sure if its my schools rep) because a lot of people have fantastic GPAs. I'm kind of discouraged because I know my GPA isn't strong although my resume and GREs were, but maybe at some other point but, I'm just going to finish my masters in Deaf Education, and maybe reapply

I was the student who originally posted the e-mail on the USU page. I've already said a LOT on that fb post, but basically I think the general consensus among most schools is that the grade inflation does not exist. I just think CSULA has negative feelings towards the program, probably for a variety of reasons. I have two more semesters of the USU 2nd bachelors and I'm enjoying it! I don't think it is easy by any means, and I'm hoping that it will help me in the long run. Good luck!

I got into mercy college, Molloy college, and new paltz. All in ny. You just have to do a ton of research on what requirements colleges have for gpas and gres. I suggest going to asha Edfind to find a program that matches you. Then email and ask about your chances. It's def harder with a lower gpa but you can do it!!

So, my job keeps giving high priority, rush tasks. I wish someone would realize that if everything you give me is rush, nothing is. Really.

My first year I got all rejections, second year 2 wait lists, and finally got in the 3rd time! But thank you!  I just wanted to share because I know how frustrating it can be and how much you wanna say screw it and give up. But you can totally do it! I got into 3 schools with a 3.1 so if I can do it you can too! And I really hope those wait lists turn into acceptances for you. Maybe you can email and express your continued interest in their program and maybe that will give you a leg up!

Don't give up yet if you're still on some waitlists! I was rejected from nine schools with only two waitlists and I just got off of one yesterday! I had already started applying for other jobs! Everything will work out for the best, and you might even beat the odds and still get into grad school this cycle!

Thanks! Because of it I am most likely going to decline an offer to Whitewater if I ever get one, so maybe it will help you!  We should be hearing again next week!!

Got off the waitlist today at Bowling Green State in Ohio with a six credit scholarship available! Have until tomorrow to decide! Want to wait on the Wisconsin schools but I have an option!

Hey guys, I just wanted to say don't give up! This was my third time applying and I finally got in! I actually got accepted to 3 schools. If this is something you truly want then keep at it. Improve your app by getting volunteer experience, rewrite that SOP, and reconnect with those LOR. It's totally possible to do if you put your heart into it! I wish you guys the best in the future. I know it's hard not getting accepted (I've been there) but be positive and don't feel like a failure because you're not! So so so many people get rejected before accepted
