allele1 reacted to LalaG in Genetic Counseling Fall 2018 Applicants
KGI interviews are out!!
In their email regarding accreditation:
"The KGI Master of Science in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling (MSGC) program has been granted Accredited New Program accreditation, effective February 1, 2018. A program achieving Accredited New Program accreditation may admit students, who, upon successfully completing their degree, will be deemed to have graduated from an ACGC-Accredited program."

I don't think this means they AREN'T going to invite out of state residents.. It's just that they aren't going to invite until closer to match day or even after... or possibly only invite those who end up on the unmatched list, who knows at this point.

Thanks for the update! I wonder if they will send rejections to most people who are out of state then.

I didn't post that, but that is a quote from Augustana's rejection letter. I don't think it's unfair or inappropriate to post it at all, it's part of the reasoning augustana is using to justify their rejection. I don't think they were necessarily trying to blame underserved populations for their rejection.

Yeah, I think KGI and Baylor have a good chance of getting accrediation by then. Arizona may just barely miss it. If so, they'll be participating in the second match with applicants who interviewed with them. (So if you still participate in match and for some reason, don't get in, there's still hope lol). And I'd assume all of them will do the same IF they don't get accredited in time

I haven't heard of that making a difference! Maybe if an interviewer senses some hesitancy about an interviewee moving across the country, then the chances of acceptance would decrease?

I got in to UCI off of the waitlist! Thank you so much everyone who declined your offers quickly and made the waitlists move. I am so so thrilled I almost cried on the phone with the director.
By the way, she said that they haven't filled out their class yet, so there is still significant shuffling to be done. Don't despair I'd you're waitlist locked, it can happen!
I'm emailing Brandeis and BU to remove me from their waitlists right now.
Where my fellow Anteaters at?

My biggest fear right now is that someone is holding onto a program that's one of my top programs and by the time they respond it could be too late for me :-(

@metabolismo looks like we got that call at about the same time haha
Yea, I just decided to let go of Emory (can't believe I'm writing that). It was my second choice school, but I'm already in so much debt from undergrad, I can't justify getting in debt over 130,000. They did offer a 2,000 scholarship for the first year, but it doesn't really help with cost overall. Plus a got a really good vibe from VCU. I know that all the GC programs are amazing and impressive so I know I'll still get an amazing education

Keep in mind all, waitlisted is great! It means they want you! They just can't out-right accept everyone they want. You are a wonderful candidate if waitlisted, so stay positive!

I got accepted to USF!!! I can't believe this is happening right now. I didn't accept yet because I want to hear from other schools first and think about it, but I'm leaning towards accepting. I'm just so shocked. Second time applying and I get outright accepted to my top program.

I think that a briefcase might be a bit over the top (unless that is your normal style). You could look for a nice padfolio for your notebook (check amazon or an office supplies store). I took a simple, black, faux-leather tote bag with some essential items, and a portfolio with a notepad/extra copies of my CV. At my last interview we were able to leave our coats and bags in a room while we went to our meetings/information sessions, so it was great to have the portfolio to carry around when I left my bag.
Wear whatever shoes you feel comfortable and confident in! Don't wear heels if you don't feel confident walking around in them, it will be very obvious from your body language if you are uncomfortable in your shoes or clothes. There are plenty of stylish, formal looking flats and loafers on the market these days. You could also try wedges if you prefer something with a bit of a heel. I have two pairs of very comfortable wedges from LifeStride that I wear almost daily for work. Unfortunately, they didn't match my interview outfit, so I wore a pair of heels that I can walk around in comfortably. I also stashed a pair of matching flats in my bag for the campus tour!
Look for something square or round toe, leather/faux leather in matte or low shine, solid color

I say interviews definitely call for the " No-makeup Makeup" look. I also really enjoy wearing makeup, and putting on little "natural looking" foundation/blush/brow tint/mascara/lip color helps me to feel strong and confident when I am out and about. I'm planning to go with the basics since I'm trying to pack as lightly as possible for my interviews, but I would feel naked without any makeup at all, lol. But for anyone who does not normally wear makeup, I would NOT recommend trying something new for your interviews. It took me a long time to figure out my go-to products and techniques for that low-key no-makeup look.

I second the flats! Look for interview wear on any website for grad students. I saw girls with tons of makeup (and I know this is subjective) but I feel like being able to see the face of foundation makeup and 4 layers of mascara its too much. Too much on the hair front can be overwhelming too.
Professional, but so people notice you and not your makeup, hair, clothes or shoes.

Flats that you can walk in! Unless you can walk all day in heels (I would end up miserable and/or at the hospital if I did) and are more comfortable with that. There are some pretty cute ones by Naturalizer that I've literally walked 7 miles a day in with no issues.
