  1. Hey, current UCI student checking in with some info on our interviews this year- UCI will be conducting their interviews on Mondays in Feb, March and April, the first date being Feb 12th. Last year I received my invitation to interview 6 days before the first interview date, so I wouldn't expect to hear from UCI much before the week of Feb 5th. The current students will be inviting you to join us for dinner the preceding Sunday night
  2. Yeah I am totally still here because, I don't know exactly, this process is still really vivid in my mind and it's interesting to watch without the anxiety of actually going through it myself. And maybe I'll see some of you interviewing at UCI in the spring! I'm already looking forward to interviews and the bounty of free sandwiches they promise. Anyway, I have things I like about UCI but without having attended another school, I don't know what is note worthy. I am 6 weeks or so into the first quarter and I feel like clinical work is already a major component of what I do; my classmates and I are already taking patient histories and pedigrees in clinic, and we're already presenting some of our cases along side faculty in weekly clinical case conferences. I love our program director. Our schedule is busy but flexible. I'm definitely here to answer any questions about UCI!
  3. In regards to the matching algorithm, don't over think it or try to game it somehow by ranking schools in some order that is not your true preference. The way to get your best possible placement is to rank schools in the order that you'd want to attend them. Here is a very detailed video that explains The Match for medical residency, but our match is going to use the same exact iterative algorithm with successive rounds of tentative matching. I really think it's better for everyone involved. http://www.nrmp.org/match-a-to-z/video-tutorials/about-the-matching-algorithm-tutorial/ Really, the only theoretical way someone might benefit from the decision day system as opposed to the match system is if they're the lucky marginal candidate that happens to profit off of someone else's anxiety. Say, Amy, Becky and Claire are all waitlisted for their top choice school, Pitt. At the end of the second day, They're all still on the waitlist, in that order. Amy and Becky are competitive candidates who both have offers at other school; Claire does not - this waitlist is her only option. At the beginning of the 3rd day, Amy and Becky both give up on their top choice, and accept offers at other schools, and Claire is now at the top of the waitlist. When one last position opens up at Pitt, it's now Claire's, even though Pitt had initially ranked Amy higher and Amy really, really wanted to be at Pitt. I know it can be temping to identify with Claire here - Yay, everyone in our example is going to be a genetic counselor, they're all at least going somewhere- but you could just as easily end up being Darla, who would have gotten in to OSU had Amy not accepted there instead of her top choice, but now will have to apply for a second cycle. The number of spots is still going to be less than the number of applicants that interviewed and some people won't get in no matter what, but the matching system will take the waiting, stress, and game theory element out of it.
  4. Huh. I was clear that I wanted to return to Kentucky and serve more rural communities and no one seemed to care. I was self conscious about being one of the only applicants I met who didn't come from a big city or go to a prestigious school for undergrad. Welp. Who knows what they want.
  5. Hey all! I got in to UCI this cycle by the skin of my teeth and am feeling some mad survivor guilt. I paid like $70 for the magoosh gre study program and knocked the gre out of the park - 170v, 163q - so I'd totally recommend that if you can afford it and are concerned about the gre. I got started on my essays really early because I'm kind of a slow writer and I wanted time lots and lots of editing. I'm happy to edit your personal statements if you pm me! The 2017 applicants channeled their nervous energy into generating a lot of data. Here is a great deal of it - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScblLkOC10eqmrQDn_PLVrutN5sllsTnQ4A6Xoq8OnMJfq7uQ/viewanalytics This is survey results about how 2017 applicants ranked different schools - it includes fairly extensive qualitative pros and cons of each program. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1o1QTZb-PHuih117SY9LW7rPF0-Qm_WGjUvfc7pj0NVM/edit?usp=sharing This is survey results about how many schools applicants applied to versus how many schools invited them to interviews. I made it mainly to get data for this one: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bvloEuIlsL5AohmhoBjuF_3UV_ADCF3lz8yVtkLjY9o/edit?usp=drivesdk This spreadsheet gathered data about how many positions each program had and approximately how many applicants each program interviewed in the 2017 cycle. In addition, I used the data from the survey to make some guesses about admission. If you have any questions please feel free to pm me! I'm eager to help.
  6. Who's still waitlist locked? Who has an offer but is waiting for their top school?
  7. Nope. She said I was in the top group, but I got the distinct impression that I was not number one when I spoke with Pamela this morning. She had a lot of people turn down waitlist spots.
  8. I got in to UCI off of the waitlist! Thank you so much everyone who declined your offers quickly and made the waitlists move. I am so so thrilled I almost cried on the phone with the director. By the way, she said that they haven't filled out their class yet, so there is still significant shuffling to be done. Don't despair I'd you're waitlist locked, it can happen! I'm emailing Brandeis and BU to remove me from their waitlists right now. Where my fellow Anteaters at?
  9. Oh my gosh I want to send you a fruit basket. Honestly, I loved Boston too, and I LOVE the city. If I didn't have kids and need to be close to family, it would have been a top choice for me. It's a wonderful program, congratulations!
  10. Uuugghhh. I'm gonna go eat all my roommate's ice cream sandwiches. He will understand.
  11. It's super kind of you to share this info. Thank you for giving me hope.
  12. Congrats! You're going to rock it. Don't forget to turn down your other offers (cough UCI cough) - there are a lot of us desperate to get off of waitlists.
  13. I am so heart broken reading you talk about UCI. I feel like getting off the waitlist there is my only chance for going to school this year.
