    I was surprised that I got into...anywhere.

    Background story:

I only have a 3.2, and a guidance counselor told me not to bother applying anywhere.  She said I wouldn't get in anywhere decent.  I went ahead and applied anyway.  And I guess all the undergraduate research paid off.  I think my grades were offset by the fact I was in ROTC for the first half of college... it was tricky to juggle a math-heavy major while in the program (I'm not a math whiz).

And here I am, 12 months after she told me not to bother applying, getting ready to go to Hopkins, the top school in my field so glad I didn't listen!

I just received an interview invite from BU Biology....their grad school, not the PiBS program. Not sure how many people apply there overall but I'm excited as Boston is "home" for me!

Of course, happy to help! (although I probably should have tried to sell you on Baltimore since Stanford is my top choice and I haven't heard from them yet but oh well )

Wow, you're a psychologist, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you're referencing pseudoscience! It has everything to do with the character of the interviewers and interviewees. People of strong character won't care what you're wearing--like me. I have transcended such things, I hope one day you, too, will achieve such a level as I have . One of the quickest ways to spot a lying sadistic psychopath is to look for people that are overdressed.

Have you ever heard of heuristics or unconscious bias?  Those of us who are worried about what to wear are attempting to maximize the favorability of the "snap judgement" that a person makes in the first ten or so seconds of meeting another human.  This has nothing to do with the character of the interviewers or the interviewees.
It may be true that this initial impression is largely outside of either parties control, but there are some things that can be done to sway the probabilities.  Including dressing appropriately for the occasion.  Because many of us are entering social situation that we haven't encountered before, it is useful to seek the advise of other, more experienced, members of the community.

I can't believe people worry this much about what to wear! Chill out and just wear decent clothes. If they care that much about what you're wearing, then they're focused on the wrong things and they can go F themselves!

Keep the hope! I had given up, so it came as a major surprise  They called me, so it would make sense that it takes time to work through all of the applicants that they're inviting.
At the beginning of the cycle, I was going to apply to PiN, but I'm an international applicant and my understanding from previous applicants was that PiN takes fewer internationals than BBS. BBS has sooo many labs under their umbrella, including many neuro labs that I was keen on, so I knew I'd be a a happy BBS student!
I'm an international, but I'm currently in the US doing research so my case might be different than yours. It might be that domestic/locally-residing applicants are contacted at a different time since, as you said, the interviewing process is different

    Are you serious.....
Berkeley mcb, UCSF tetrad, and Stanford biosciences all want me and say I was a great candidate, but Caltech rejects me like that?
    I am crushed.
    When are the interview dates?

Congrats! I was thinking they were done. You've given me some hope that I might yet hear from them. So far, I've gotten 6/9 interviews, but MIT is my top choice.
I noticed that you've applied to both neuro and bioscience programs, like harvard's BBS. In retrospect, I wish I done the same since some of the labs at Harvard that I wanted are neuro labs but also available to BBS applicants. Given that this was such a competitive year for PiN, applying to BBS was probably a good way of getting a foot in the door even if it means not being a member of PiN.

I heard from Tufts Sackler Neuro on the Monday before Christmas. I reached out to BU GPN and they said they won't be meeting/reviewing applications until January

According to results from previous years, it seems that Yale BBS Neuro gives out invites shortly after the New Year.

Also for anyone who didn't hear from NYU, I got an email this morning saying that they had sent out all of their invites.

I'm an international residing in the U.S, and so far I've had domestic travel/accommodations covered. Some programs also extend that coverage to Canadians, in case you're there
