  1. Are you invited to the visiting weekend? That seems like the most crucial thing - going to that would allow you to still hobnob with relevant profs, get a feel for the dept, etc., especially if you're considering other options and don't want to wait till April 12th to start thinking comparatively. If they haven't told you either way, that's definitely something to inquire about. Other than that, I don't think a friendly follow-up to POIs is unwarranted either.
  2. I don't think Yale does interviews. I interviewed with Columbia a couple weeks ago - it was three professors from my subfield. They state on their website that, unlike other schools who use a holistic committee made up of people from across the entire department, Columbia sends all the apps from a particular subfield to the faculty in that subfield only. This makes for a more specialized admissions process, and also means that each subfield committee probably has relative autonomy. My point: just because some subfields interviewed DOES NOT mean that all of them will, meaning there is still a chance of acceptance without interview. I should note that this is an exception: most of the time, no interview means no acceptance.
  3. With the high percentage of early modernists they're sporting, here's hoping! I think they're the all-around Holy Grail of departments, stacked in basically every area. Their placement rates in early modern jobs especially are staggering. AHH I just need to know
  4. I also got into Michigan! Six years of guaranteed funding! My parents are both alumni, they'll be thrilled. Email at 8 PM Friday, capping off two explosive Fridays running - those adcoms are ready for the pub. 8a/0w/5r Not gonna count us out yet at Yale - a glance at their results board turns up some serious incoherence: calls over multiple days, some people getting emails instead. Might take longer for those of us who applied for special degrees, like Renaissance Studies. Although, looking more closely, I now see that their stiff language entrance requirements may keep/have kept me out That said, still waiting for Penn, my number one choice!! They've sent out decisions on Mondays the last two years running. Good luck to all!
  5. Ominous! It's hard not to feel like poor flies being struck down for sport, these days. And yes, I agree, I had a stellar first week, but since then it's been a painful trickle. Here's hoping we all finish strong.
  6. Dang - congrats to you mystery EM scholar-wizards who took the spot(s). Luckily all three of us have solid options already! Early modern solidarity!
  7. Out at Vanderbilt too - oh well. Someone posted a Yale acceptance via phone - anyone want to claim that? 7a/0w/5r
  8. And the winner is?? Congratulations!!
  9. I'm in at Cornell! Totally random website check after seeing the posters here. No email yet (although I assume that's coming). Definitely check the portal if you haven't, and best of luck to everyone!
  10. A fellow member of my current department got a phone call from Fordham's DGS a while ago (Feb 3rd, a Friday) with his PhD acceptance. He's not on GC so he wouldn't have posted, but it's possible acceptances have all gone out by now. I didn't apply there myself, so I don't have any other info. I'm sorry - I hope they contact you!
  11. Being on the adcom is considered by many profs to be the lowest of all possible grunt work. A DGS told me recently it's by far his least favorite committee. Think about it: you read through hundreds of apps, 95% of which you have to eventually reject and will never see again. Almost all your labor is negative, keeping things out rather than nurturing things already in. And, as others have said, they're not professionals. Undergrad admissions are a tight ship, with designated coordinators, recruitment officers, readers, even whole buildings at most schools. This is different, the always-already overworked department itself taking on extra work during one of the busiest times of the year (MLA, start of spring semester, etc.). So just keep in mind that perspective: what for us is the end-all be-all is for them a minor but onerous chore. By that light the attention we do get is very kind.
  12. Thanks a ton for calling them!! Really helps quell the anxiety. And you're right, an acceptance would make decisions harder, but at this point I just want to know one way or the other. Good luck to you as well, I hope you hear good news from them and elsewhere!
  13. Standard autoemail telling me to check the website. Said details would come directly from the department soon. Check the website if you applied! Was feeling pretty down too after implied rejections from Berkeley and UCLA. I guess it really is about fit.
  14. JUST GOT INTO BROWN AHHHHHHHHHH
  15. Bless ye. Now I can dismiss my left eye from duty, constantly scanning for that "(1)" to pop up next to the word "Inbox" on my email (god even typing it gave me shivers by this point). Anyone else's heart stopping only to freeze in their throats every time their current school emails them about phishing scandals and career fairs?
  16. I wouldn't write Berkeley off yet - it's a large program, which means it's likely multiple GCers will receive offers/waitlists, and because of its quality they'll be highly likely to post those results immediately. Only one posted response a day late doesn't seem quite right - might have been a particular POI email. I think the main wave is still to come.
  17. Congrats, such an amazing program for early modern! Gina Bloom and Fran Dolan are rockstars
  18. Hope yet for Columbia applicants: just got a Skype interview request. The email said mine was among the final apps in my subfield being considered, which means they're sending out requests/offers by area rather than tout court, so timelines may differ. Good luck to anyone still waiting!
  19. Congratulations!! I very much hope you both attend the visiting weekend so we can reconvene our GC forum there. It would be cathartic after all this anxious hand-wringing.
  20. I'm into Hopkins as well! Congrats Sunsy!! I can't believe it, I've rechecked the email like ten times
  21. Unfortunately she didn't, just that the competition was unusually strong this year - more and better applications. She also didn't indicate whether or not all decisions had been released - I hope more trickle out! Good luck!
  22. Rice is me, got the email from the DGS earlier this afternoon! Very excited! She said the competition was stiff this year, both in terms of number and quality. My portal remains unchanged though.
  23. Thanks so much, and I hope they start rolling in for you as well!
  24. Thanks so much, and congrats to you as well, I see you're already on the board yourself! Early modern is such a fascinating pair with ecocrit, so many assumptions about the status of the human (what defines it, what its differences are from animals and other matter) aren't in place yet, even if you can recognize them forming. Thanks very much, and congrats to you too! I'm always irked when ecocrit isn't on dropdown menus of subfields - hopefully we'll be able to start changing that!
  25. Added my info for Northwestern
