I see where you're coming from, but I respectfully disagree. I don't think the number of BA's/BS's being given out is the problem, the problem exists within America's university system itself. Having a generally better-educated populace is a good thing. Forcing kids to go into crippling debt in order to achieve that is where the issue lies. Until the cost of education goes down, we're stuck in this circular logic where kids go to college to get a degree to pay off the debt obtained for getting their degree. We shouldn't be discouraging people from getting BA's and BS's, especially if we're discouraging people from following their passions. We should be making it easier for them to pursue these passions without the fear of falling into such severe debt that they never end up attaining their goal.

I'm still assuming that if there's no maintenance message by tomorrow at 9pm, it's not gonna be Tuesday - though this may just be a method for me to feel some control over the arbitrary release date, lol #relatablethoright?

So if the maintenance message doesn't come up by around 9PM EST tonight, we're assuming it's Friday?

E/VG VG/E E/E HM as an Undergrad Disappointed but it's okay. Would be curious on anyone's thoughts on whether to apply again as a first year grad or as a second year grad (and how people navigated that decision this year). Congrats to those who got it!

This is awful, and hopefully it shows all the scientists in the ivory tower that research and science are unfortunately political, whether they want it to be or not.

Just wanted to update and say that I was accepted over another applicant who had already worked with my POI and had significantly more experience than me (they published with my POI, were close with her, etc.) So it is definitely possible if you interview well and are confident.

What exactly are prestige and rankings determined by? I feel like a lot of people just take rankings at face value without questioning who determines them (i.e., which people have enough power to determine rankings, that the field of psychology is still dominated by white men who are biased when selecting which grants get funded, etc.) Because I'm considering a super less well-known school over a top 5 program - it looks like I'd be able to publish about the same amount, the faculty at this less well-known school are super respected in their field, etc. And this lesser known school is extremely competent in terms of diversity and social justice compared to all the other programs I applied to, including this top 5 one. Though, as OP touches on, people have told me that going to this top 5 program would help me get a job after graduation - but at this point I'm not sure it's the type of job I would even want (though this program was great when I interviewed, just not as good a fit for me I think). I'd be curious to hear what other people think, because after going on some interviews I feel like basing your decision on fit is the way to go.

This is a super interesting thread. I just applied to a lab at a school against a candidate who 1) went to that school for undergrad and 2) worked as an RA for that particular lab for two years after undergrad and as a result got two-three pubs out of it, whereas I 1) didn't go that school for undergrad and 2) don't have any pubs. Hoping that I still have a shot - I don't think they'd invite someone to interview if they didn't have a chance, right?

To whoever received invites from Duke - would you mind messaging me your POI (or letting us know if it was from the DCT)? Thanks, and I hope everyone is practicing self-care!

What % of applicants from the total pool do ya'll think get preliminary phone/Skype interviews? And roughly how many of those do you think get the in-person invite? Curious if this varies by program too.

Any self-care strategies you all have found helpful as we await interview/rejection notifications? One of my friends at my school got an interview, and while I am super happy for them, it also slightly elevated my nervousness (I didn't apply to the school they got a notification from, so it doesn't reflect on me, but social comparison is hard to shake.)

How is everyone feeling about potentially getting interviews? It's kinda nerve-wrecking to think that so much of this process is dependent on the level of quality of our specific cohort, which is really out of our control.
