Congrats on your two offers! In terms of what would look better on paper, it would almost certainly be being a Registered Social Worker with an MSW from UofT (school rep, greater employability, etc.).
In terms of financially, this is hard to say. Yorkville tuition is more expensive. But you'd have to factor in Toronto rent/living expenses if you chose UofT. So you'd have to do some extra calculations to determine how Toronto rent/living expenses + tuition compares to just paying Yorkville's tuition.
In terms of your post-grad career, yes Yorkville doesn't have a great rep, but I know people (my therapist)/have heard several other people mention that they know Registered Psychotherapists who graduated from Yorkville. So I would say many people don't have a serious issue meeting the required supervised hours to become registered. And once you're registered, the school you went to won't really matter. So if staying home is really important to you (and you don't want to reject both schools and try your luck with Laurier's online MSW next year), then I don't necessarily think it would be career suicide choosing Yorkville.
But if you can handle ~ 1.5 years in Toronto, then I would lean towards UofTs MSW as I think most would objectively consider it a stronger program than the Yorkville counselling MA.

Update for my Advanced MSW applications (March 8th)
- Carleton - Accepted March 1st with $12,000 scholarship offered
- UBC - Accepted March 2nd but with no scholarship money - Officially Accepted this offer
- Waterloo - Waitlisted March 4th
- Western - Accepted March 8th - assuming no scholarship money
For any future students looking at this thread or anyone waitlisted I will go over my application. I am genuinely shocked that I was accepted anywhere!
- Graduated with my BSW from UFV in 2020 - I believe with around a 3.9 GPA, also completed a social services diploma in 2018.
- Had around 6000 paid hours in social work type jobs - I have mainly worked with women experiencing violence and in harm reduction. I had about 5 paid positions.
- In my personal statements I was very forward about my life experiences. Especially with Carleton which was an essay style I talked about my own substance use and sexual experiences. I was torn about being this open but I think not holding back really helped. My advice would be to write about what you know and not what you think they are looking for. The schools want to know who you are beyond your GPA and work experience. Once again good luck to everyone and congrats to everyone for taking the courage, time and energy in applying and putting ourselves out there!

Like many of you, I'm constantly watching gradcafe and refreshing application portals, but I'm gonna take a few week breather by not checking gradcafe or the portals - when the decision email comes, it comes. Best of luck to you all during this waiting game

I think I've come to realize that it's not necessarily the wait or delay that is the problem for me but it's the lack of transparency around when you can expect to hear results. E.g., if an application deadline is December and the school sends a mass email after the deadline saying "you can expect to hear results by the 1st week of April", even though that's a really long wait, at least knowing I won't hear anything until April would help ease my stress because I wouldn't have to check a portal everyday or ask people whether they've heard from a school yet. It's also so much better for administrators because they would get way less emails and calls from applicants asking for a status update!
Here's to hoping future program departments can move towards being open about timelines to applicants.

I completely agree! It’s so hard, I want to know if I’m moving across the country, or doing a 2 year BSW, or looking for a new job…it’s hard mentally to be in such a limbo for what feels like forever!

Update for my Advanced MSW applications (March 4th)
- Carleton - accepted with $12,000 scholarship offered
- UBC - accepted but with no scholarship money, I did email them and they said that since I had one of the higher GPA's so I may be able to apply and get between $1000 - $3000. Also the program as a domestic student is only $6000 total for the year which seems to be one of the more affordable ones?
- Waterloo - just checked and got waitlisted.
- Also applied to Western but haven't heard back, if I do get accepted will turn down as this was my last choice and doesn't seem to be funding help/
I think I am going to go with UBC as I already live in Vancouver and want to continue living here so I think it makes more sense but also hard to turn down the scholarship money so I am still torn.
Good luck everyone!
