  1. I just got a call from the University of Cincinnati. They said the read my app, really liked it, and want to fly me out there for the interview weekend in late February (starting Feb. 23)!! I'm so pumped!

  3. Yeah, if you're into Magna Graecia you'll be fine there I would think. Same with pre-Roman Italy. I applied to BU for Archaeology. I have a friend who goes to Sheffield for Greek arch. and he really likes it! What is your undergrad major? And you never know! I definitely feel you. I'm surprised I'm not applying to any art history programs for arch. All of mine are in classics or archaeology. I've applied to IPCAA for their PhD and still haven't heard anything, so I'm going to just assume that's a rejection for me.
  4. I can't speak on behalf of how good the department is/isn't, but I decided not to apply there because the faculty in Roman archaeology wasn't there/was nonexistent. It seemed like they had a much, much stronger literature presence in Classics--and some Greek archaeologists. Where else did you apply?
  5. @striped I'm in the same boat as you as an undegrad applying straight to PhD programs. I feel very underqualified, even though as an undergrad I have done a lot (no publications or anything, just heavy coursework, a little study abroad, working as a tutor). I do have hope though that the PhD programs that say they admit BA students really mean it. For those schools they get a deal if they can keep one student under their wing for their entire graduate career. There is hope!
  6. That's good! Out of curiosity, what dept did you apply to for UT Austin? (Anthro probably?) I applied to Classics and like everyone else am still waiting...quietly...anxiously...
  7. Thanks for the reply! I'm glad departments will put that kind of thought into that. I'm happy to have found this community too. I don't have many friends going through it right now, let alone in my field, so it's great to find like minds.
  8. Hey guys, this may be a dumb question--but thinking about it at the moment I'm afraid I probably made a rookie mistake. It totally didn't even cross my mind to contact POIs before applying (last semester was really rough so I had a hard enough time just getting apps finished and everything with stuff going on)--so thinking about it now I'm concerned about my chances decreasing after the fact...In my personal statements I always mentioned faculty/projects that I would love to work with, but never explicitly said "I want this POI to be my adviser" or anything like that... Thoughts?
  9. Oh my goodness, you're on fire! Congratulations!
  10. Congrats to @Archaic_Smile (man, I dig that username--those smiles make me giggle every time) and @ploutarchos! Did you apply for their MA or PhD? I applied to the University of Cincinnati and am still a sitting duck--though their apps weren't due until Jan. 15th.
  11. Congrats @likeavirgil and @the gadfly!!!
  12. Hello @eggzand @museum_geek! Congrats on the acceptances! My family lives about fifteen minutes from Madison, and I'm in Milwaukee, so I can vouche for how nice the campus is. When you applied to Ann Arbor, what department did you apply to?
  13. It's been a couple days. Any of you lovely people had any luck hearing back from prospective schools? I haven't yet, but there is plenty of waiting time left!
  14. I'm the same. It's the weekend and I'm still checking like an idiot. It's just such a long wait...Made the mistake of looking at the little red diamonds on the results pages of my schools where it shows GRE scores people have had. Doesn't help the confidence! Stay away!
  15. I love your philosophy! That's how I've thought about a lot of things. Aim high, then if you settle in the middle, congrats, you're still ahead! I've heard great things about nautical stuff in Texas. I also applied to Cornell, but first to their Classics department (they let you put a second choice though so I put their Archaeology MA). I'm coming straight out of my BA (I graduate in May), so I'm anxious about how lots of my programs accept people straight from the BA into the PhD--meaning competition is even more fierce...No matter what, the introspection is important, and good luck!
  16. Awesome! What schools did you apply to? And same here, I have a couple things I'd like to hear back from in the next week or so, but most of them probably won't be until February (or at least hopefully, because for a lot of them if you don't hear back until March you're SOL).
  17. Yeah, the lack of data makes it more nervewracking, I think. Info is pretty scarce for other classical archaeology/classics programs too. I'm just sitting like around refreshing my email like a silly person... Ooh, that's interesting! My only worry is whether or not they send out the emails all at the same time or at different times.
  18. Awesome, thanks! I'll PM you.
  19. Hello! We've got a thread for all of Anthropology, but how about all you Archaeology-specific applicants? Who are you? What do you study? Where are you applying? Have you heard back from anyone? Nervously twiddling your thumbs? Gather 'round!
  20. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what did you do to strengthen your application over the year before your second app? I'm just curious because if I don't get in to places I want to think about options for fortifying my app, etc. If you don't get in will get send you an email with tips? Thanks!
  21. Congratulations! I'm glad you're getting to go this time around!
  22. Oh boy, that makes me so anxious because I haven't gotten any emails about interviews...I would think they would send all the emails out at the same time? Sadly I'm not sure about IPGRH's timeline.
  23. I hope so. I just want to fall to my knees and shout to the heavens "I know how to write!" and "The Analytical Writing is the only score on the GRE that I did really well on!". Pump my fist up at the heavens and await the wrath of the Grad school gods.
  24. @likeavirgilUnfortunatly the upload-system wouldn't let me put up more than one paper. I suppose I could have put two papers in one word document, but it didn't come to mind at the time...dang! Either way I managed to stretch the paper I turned in to 19 pages without writing anything else (nobody should notice the 2.5 spacing...), but I still mentioned in my personal statement why I uploaded that one. I have a linguistic anthropology paper I could have uploaded, but the style of writing is so drastically different from what I write for Classics, so it may have seemed strange for them to read, I feel. This is so tough, ugh!
  25. Has anybody ever had any problems with page requirements for applications? I just turned in my app for the University of Cincinnati and their page requirement is 20-30 pages, but I've never had to write something that length for undergrad in Classics (in fact, when I've told my profs about this requirement they're kind of flabbergasted). If I turned a 20 page paper in to most of my classes my profs wouldn't have read it, because you can write just as well in smaller portions...Cincinnati accepts PhD students straight from the BA, but also accepts students with MAs, so I don't know if that's why. Either way I turned in something that I managed to stretch to 19 pages somehow, and just mentioned in my personal statement that it's the longest thing I had Classics-related to turn in...My senior honors thesis will be 50-70 pages, but it won't be done until Spring. Anyone else had this problem? Did admissions ever get picky about it?
