This sucks... no one wants a former cop with an MA who was almost killed twice in the line. I don't have the publication and research experience that all of you do, but I've lived it. Have fun with your f'ing studying..... I'll be greeting you at Walmart.

I still haven't heard from Yale or Toronto, but UCSD was nice enough to reject me twice! Haha! 

For those of you who are thinking about reapplying next year, if you'd like, I would be willing to look over statements of intent and writing samples over the summer. (I am writing my thesis right now! Eeek!) I have been a writing tutor for over 4 years and love helping with statements of intent. Obviously, I can't guarantee success, but I can help you strengthen what you have. 

For those of you who are thinking about not applying again, I offer the same as above and encourage you to never give up on your dream. I know how vulnerable this process makes us and how much we want to give up sometimes. We can't. Each of us brings something to the table that others don't. Students need that. Sociology needs that. Academia needs that! Maybe we can be the generation of scholars that works to change the face of academia, making it less competitive, more equitable, more diverse, and more applicable to and accepted by the broader public. 

I did as well! I received more than I thought I would - 20k. What about you all?
 

I heard back and was accepted! Congrats to those who were accepted!! I feel as though a heavy weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm waiting to hear back from a few other schools, but I am pretty set on UCI for the most part. How are you all feeling?

I was also wondering what you all think the acceptance rate is? I was told by a friend who goes to UCI that they usually keep an unofficial waitlist and extend Skype interviews after others let them know they cannot attend. Interesting process!

Hi! I think it is a really good idea to look into this stuff before you decide to go the PhD route. If you are interested in higher education, from what I have heard the job market in CJ is actually really strong at the moment. However, who knows will it will be in 5 years. "Figure 7 shows that not only is the employment rate among recent graduates [from the doctoral programs included] very high – 94 percent are known to be employed in a tenure-track academic position, a local, state, or federal research agency, or a private research firm – but also that academic positions are by far the most prevalent mode of employment for almost 60 percent of graduates."

I'm not sure if anyone has posted something about this recently - if so, i apologize for asking a repetitive question. I've been thinking a lot about getting my PhD in criminal justice, but i have struggled to find a job with my CJ MS. I really love CJ but i have to make sure i get a job if i'm going further into academics. I've checked out the bureau of labor statistics for information about CJ/criminology employment, but it is a bit confusing. I've looked at the post-secondary teachers and the sociologists tab, and the employment outlooks don't look all that stellar. Perhaps i'm wrong and there are lots of jobs out there for CJ PhD holders? I'm trying to get an idea of how competitive it will be. I can't afford to not find a job after i earn a doctorate. I'm completely okay with being a professor or a researcher, but i need some kind of information before i commit to it to ease my stress.

UCLA is my top choice. I wish they would send out the rejections at one time. I've been trying to stay optimistic as well, hoping for a waitlist.

With all sincerity I meant no harm and was just sharing information. I didn't know you could post links as I'm fairly new at posting on this particular board. Some boards have prohibited the posting of links in the comments section. There is some truth to to socapp2017 post, out of the 9 PhD programs I applied to, I did get rejected from 5, but interviewed at 2 and received an offer ($20,000 fellowship/GA) from one so far. Good luck to you all. 

Whenever I see on the admissions results page that someone has heard back from a school I haven't, I always feel super anxious and sad. I would rather the school just reject me than play this waiting game sometimes. 

If they invited 31 to this year's prospective event, I'd be willing to bet that's it for admits then. UCLA seems to notify rejects later and it'll just be a matter of the graduate school getting around to rejecting folks. Now, time for my hourly, let's-hurry-it-up-Harvard-so-I-can-make-my-decision post. 

In sure you all did a lot better than you think you did. Have faith/hope! I didn't make this account with an anonymous type name so you all probably know exactly who I am but, everyone I met there was super smart and a real contender! You all definitely have a shot!

I told my sister to order Chinese food because we didn't have anything to eat at home, and (I kid you not) this was my fortune.  

Apart of me wonders if admission and faculty committees read our anxiety filled forums and comments. Lol. Stay strong everyone! 

I've heard from a few people that they tend to release acceptances in two waves.  There is still hope!

@csot - Thanks for the good vibes. I've resigned myself to taking another year off between my M.A. and Ph.D...it's not ideal, but it is what it is. I'm not a big believer in religion or a higher power but I do think that the universe unfolds as it should. It just wasn't meant to be for me this time around. But I have to believe that there is something bigger and better waiting for me and I just can't see it yet. 
Next time around I'll try and cast a wider net than just four schools but as I paid for all of the applications/sending of GRE scores myself, I just couldn't afford to apply to more schools this time around on an adjunct salary. 

Haha I don't need to know ASAP but this just might be the worst fake out I've ever experienced...I've waited for days/weeks I can wait a little longer.

Type in your email, and it should show a password "Retrieve" button.  I remember I had difficulty finding out how to use the site the first time I logged on.

Based on the results board, it looks like NYU sociology notified of acceptances last year between Feb 11 and Feb 24, so you probably have at least another week or two to go. Hang in there! 

That makes a lot of sense! The Stanford RILE program is my top choice, but when I talked to someone from admissions, she told me that they hardly accept any students. I think she told me they only accepted a few in the last couple of years, but that was going to change this year. *fingers crossed*
