Now if Santa Cruz could send me their (also strangely late) rejection I can finally be free! -

Right? I'm just a little salty but mostly amused. Maybe "pleaseure" is a new word meaning it's very much not been a pleasure? Like, "please(don't apply again)-ure"? -

I came back just to talk about "pleaseure" ? Honestly though -

I have written that they typically reject in the first week of March, so I'm not expecting that sweet sweet rejection until next week, probably. But yes. Just give it to me! -

I reached out to Brandeis to see what was up with people who hadn't been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted. They said while they've sent out those notifications, people still waiting are on a waitlist, just not ranked high enough to be notified. They said they'll follow up in the next few weeks as decisions are finalized. -

Thank you! I have learned a good bit. I think trying next year when I'm not trying to finish my MA will let me have a much stronger application! I'm still really into the land idea! I'm stoked if more people start looking into it. Maybe I'll just start a humanities commune somewhere instead of reapplying! I think so! I'm still processing it and making a plan, but I know a PhD is what I want to do, so I'll likely be back! -

Not yet, but I'm counting it as implied since they've sent acceptances and wait list notifications. -

With the sudden UW result I'm solidly a shut out this year. Best of luck to everyone still in the process! -

I agree that it's more complicated than not. Finishing my MA at an unknown school, I've had many talks with professors about how to overcome the "deficit" of where I went to school, and, well, that's clearly worked out for me. I also think there can be, in some situations, a connection between schools with more "prestige" and their ability to prepare students for the admissions process/PhD study. -

At least what I have written is Brandeis accepts over a couple days so I haven't given up hope yet. -

Yeah! We're looking at land for sale and thinking about what is needed in terms of space and zoning for both agriculture and residence. For the initial business, there's also looking at keeping livestock and opening costs vs. profit (lots of farmer's markets etc. to sell eggs/wool). Eventually as we can build/bring in more living space we plan to Air BnB for additional income. Then comes studio space that can be rented and used for homesteading classes. It's a long long plan, but I think if we did it right it could work! -

Email about what studying at Brandeis can offer you from dean of grad college right about the time my estimation says they'll be sending acceptances. They have to know how stressful that is, right? -
Modeling Successful Failure
CaffeineCardigan replied to CaffeineCardigan's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks! I've been thinking about it a lot since results started coming in and my students started asking, but a former student asked me to write a LOR for them yesterday and I thought that maybe it's something we should talk about more openly. -
Hi y'all-- I'm teaching two classes currently (university students across all academic years) and also have students from past years who know that I'm moving on this semester and are asking questions, and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on modeling handling PhD rejections well. I want to be able to show them healthy ways of dealing with failure, especially because it seems to be a big challenge for university students (we all get that). I also, though, don't want to simply ignore that trying something and not having it work out sucks and there are necessarily negative feelings to be experienced and processed. Is this something you've dealt with? Have you had these conversations with students (at any level)?

I've been working with a few people looking at starting a little homestead where people can live sustainably/visit and use their skills by teaching lessons or just having creative space. Shockingly this feels less idealistic than a PhD, but academia is still, I think, where I want to be. -

Last week I had a dream that I retook the GRE and got much better scores. I woke up and thought "No I retook the GRE and got only slightly better scores!" and went back to sleep. The next day I remembered that I've only taken it once. We're deep into constructing new realities to process the ambiguity of this process. -

I'm wondering if UCSC is done, but it looks like they randomly spread out their acceptances over Jan/Feb. There hasn't been anything since January, though.
