2019 Applicants

I've been feeling the same way with my two official responses. I like thinking about taking the time to apply next cycle! I've also been looking at buying some land and starting a little homestead farm situation. So, there's that. -

I'm finally done submitting applications and resigned to the waiting. I had a moment of sheer panic when Rutgers emailed me two days ago to say my SOP wasn't submitted. I don't know how, but apparently I just submitted that app without any attempt at uploading my SOP. Thankfully they let me submit it, but damn. -

I'm in the same boat. My hope is that they are taking longer because they are tailoring their letters for individual programs, but the stress is too real. -

I do literature and the environment/ecocriticism with an interest in Transpacific studies and the ethics of space colonization. Let's do this thing! -

Hi, friends. Was it just two years ago that I was here doing MA applications? Yikes. I am back in the application life doing PhD apps for English Literature. I'm currently in the mad dash of submitting applications (2 today, 4 more this week), grading an incredible number of papers I've been ignoring, and writing my own. What a time. Everyone sharing that they have finished their apps and are back to real life is giving me hope. -
I'm currently doing a funded MA at a small state university, though I was accepted to 3 other programs. Most of us came in with ill-defined research interests, but we're being allowed to explore and receiving valuable guidance on future career opportunities. We are getting help with both applying for PhDs and applying for community college jobs. In my literature cohort of 6 students, 4 are fully funded. The other 2 did not apply for funding (as far as I know). So far my MA program has been a great opportunity to learn more about the direction I'd like to go with my research and to fill in some of my knowledge gaps in the field of literature. For my program I think writing sample, SOP, and letters were more important than anything else. Teaching experience is common among people who received funding, but not all GTAs had prior teaching experience. I had no idea what I wanted to specialize in when I was applying for MA programs, but I pretty quickly developed a good idea of what I want to do. Good luck!

2017 Final Decisions
CaffeineCardigan replied to Mippipopolous's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I've been off this forum for weeks because for a while there it looked like I was going to have to wait and apply again next year, but I ended up accepting an offer from Northern Arizona I'm pretty happy with. I received an assistantship with a decent stipend, 100% tuition remission, and health insurance completely covered by the university. After thinking I wouldn't be able to go anywhere and rejecting offers from my top two schools because of finances, I'm so happy to have accepted an offer! Now I'm looking towards getting back into my studies and getting ready to do this all again with a much stronger application for PhD programs in two years! -
BA and MA at Same University
CaffeineCardigan replied to CaffeineCardigan's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thank you all! I'm glad to hear this is more a scary story passed down to grad hopefuls than an actual rule. I'm not too worried about showing I'm adaptable after moving to Japan to teach for 2 years, so I'm thinking going back to where I did my BA won't be such a bad thing. Thank you again!- 11 replies

Hey everyone! I tried seeing if this information was easy to find anywhere else in the forum but didn't come up with anything, and if it's a question I'm having it might be a question someone else is having, too. It's looking like if I'm going to grad school this year it will be at the same university where I did my undergrad. Now I have heard in the past that it is frowned upon to do your BA and MA at the same school, but I wanted to ask what you all thought about that. Do you think it has a negative effect on PhD choices to have two degrees from the same school?

Venting Thread

@Wyatt's Terps Your advice is very much appreciated! It's especially appreciated because I like what you have to say. I am worried about taking on more loans because I do have some from undergrad, but I also know that this is what I want to do and that I am in it for the long haul. It seems like a necessary financial risk to give me time to do what I love and apply for a funded PhD immediately after. Though that might be the emotional high from the final acceptance talking, of course. -
2017 Acceptances

I AM LITERALLY SHAKING AT THIS MOMENT BUT I JUST GOT ACCEPTED TO MY FIRST CHOICE PROGRAM!!! MsC at University of Edinburgh in US Literature: Cultural Values from Revolution to Empire. I emailed them yesterday asking for an update and they said they hadn't had a chance to look at my application yet but would soon and I just received an unconditional offer!! No word on funding again but I thought I had NO CHANCE and I've been accepted?? I am so emotional and so overwhelmed because this is going to be a tough decision but I am SO HAPPY -

@Yanaka For my current job I had to let them know that I was leaving already at the beginning of January, so I'm unemployed and losing my Japanese work visa as of the end of July. So I mean hypothetically I could find a new job, but I have no idea where I would go. It's definitely a thing to consider, though. -

My vent for today: Everyone says you shouldn't go to a program without funding but I've received no funding offers with any of my acceptances and while I'm able to apply for some funding later it's not a guarantee and probably won't cover everything. But on the other hand if I don't go anywhere then I have no place to live and no where to go come this fall. So my choice seems to be add more debt and keep my career goals in motion or live on my grandparent's couch in a tiny town with no jobs and apply to different schools next year. I was really excited about one of the programs I was accepted to, but now I'm worried that by accepting my place there I'll be doing more harm for my future than good. There just isn't a clear choice like I've had in all of my big life decisions up to this point and that's making it really tough. -
I emailed my top choice school because I have a decision deadline of March 2nd for another program I was accepted to but have heard nothing from my top choice. They emailed me back the same day and said they'd been swamped with applications but would move mine up (it hadn't been processed yet) and look at it ASAP. Now that I know a decision is on the way sometime soon I'm both more relieved and more anxious. On one hand I'm relieved knowing the decision is coming soon but on the other hand IT COULD BE COMING AT ANY TIME. Of course my top choice is my last school to respond. It's going to be a tough choice to begin with because I don't think I'll be received funding from anywhere, but it's an even tougher choice coming up to March 2nd while still waiting on my top school!

@Yanaka Thanks! I really hope so. I'm worried about the timeline for going from a 1 year masters to a PhD, but that's a later-me problem. I've been in Japan for two years now and while I'm ready to move on from where I am currently, I'm not quite ready to go back to the US.
