  1. Awww man, the OG thread was one of my favorites on this site. Sad to see it gone...
  2. Congrats! I'm excited for graduate school. I wanted to do oceanography to get into the field work! Are there any other oceanographers on this board? I'm sure there are more of you on here.
  3. My undergraduate major. It's the only thing that made me stand out. I applied for a graduate program that has a different focus than my undergrad major/research. The PI that I was interested in was specifically interested in what I was. Most of the other applicants fit the program description well, and so I stood out as an applicant. I'm convinced that's the only reason I got accepted. So don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone/previous research fields! But other than that, a strong SOP as most have stated before me! And experience such as research/internships!
  4. I think that a school's pedigree should always come second to your interests. If there's a school with a PI who is a better fit for you, you should choose it regardless of the school's ranking or name. That being said, if that school's funding isn't so good, you might also reconsider and go with the school with better funding (which the ivy school seems to have).
  5. I mostly applied to west coast schools. I got into USC's MBBO, but I got rejected from UCSC, and UW. What attracted you to physical oceanography?
  6. Hey all! I'm posting to see if there are any other people on this board who are going to attend a graduate program in Marine biology and related topics starting in the Fall of 2017. I got into a school that I was very interested in; I'm excited, and I wanted other people to talk with about the field/their schools! I'm also very nervous as I'm going from a chemistry background into a biology heavy program, and I hope I'll be able to keep up.
  7. Can I ask what programs you've been accepted to?
  8. Hey guys. I'm a senior at my undergraduate waiting to hear back from a few chemical oceanography programs. I was wondering if there were others on this site who were applying to the same program (obviously, the person who made this thread is considering it), and I was wondering if any others have heard back from anywhere.
  9. As someone who went to a school in a boring town for their undergrad, I would recommend you go with the PI whose project interests you the most. You can live with living in a boring town, but you might regret doing research on something you are not as connected to.
  10. Ah, that's unfortunate. It would have been awesome to have been a top prospective for Scripps. The prof who got me the visit has been sending me a lot of reading material regarding his current work, so I'm optimistic with my chances (will read up more in depth though). Did all of the schools you got accepted to give you offers to visit? Or was it a some schools do and others no?
  11. Hey, I'm applying for the program that you are a part of. Actually, I applied for Scripps and a bunch of other schools. 1. Do you know if Scripps has made its decisions yet? 2. I got invited to interview at another institute; any tips?
