  1. If you are the Duke rejection and you are reading this can you post on results if you got an interview or not?
  2. No idea on specifics but since a lot of people have multiple offers people do get off waitlist frequently in general. So it depends on where you are on the list and if those accepted are going to decline. Making CMU's waitlist is a great achievement so you should get in somewhere.
  3. It is the default. When I have posted it was because it decided to autocorrect Statistics to A.M. Statistics. I would assume that it is not meaningful. The first few times I couldn’t figure out how to override it but you let it correct and then remove the A. M and it works.
  4. It is very likely that you will be officially accepted pending you meet university requirements (which the department should know about). The graduate school or possibly the dean has to approve your application, but if your GPA, GRE, and TOEFL (if applicable) meet requirements you should be fine. So far my timelines on official letters have been about a week (plus or minus 3 business days) until it becomes completely official. The person who posted likely is in a similar boat or also had to wait for things to become official.
  5. Anyone else think we need a decision version of this thread to separate the waiting freakouts from the decision freakouts to avoid worsening the anxiety of those still waiting?
  6. I am in a similar situation and it somewhat matters to me. It’s not a dealbreaker but I feel like a cultural gap might be difficult to connect. I am factoring it in more as how I liked the current and prospective graduate students at that institution over another rather than the actual numbers. And I think the 50/50 goal is maybe more about expenses and politics than a real meaningful difference. Domestic students can be cheaper (in state tuition at public universities) and some would argue that the goal of American public universities is to educate Americans. If math is anything like stats, international applicants make up the vast majority of the pool and if they didn’t consider it as a factor there would be probably very few domestic graduate students.
  7. I am going to have to make a decision now on where to go. I am interested how others have or will make their decision. I have a spreadsheet to rank based on various things (stipend, research fit, completion rate, location etc) and I am deciding how I want to weight things. How I feel after visits is going to be a big factor for me because I want a great environment. For those of you already attending how did you make your decision? Also if you have thoughts on my personal decision for which program is best for me as an aspiring academic wanting to do social science Bayesian stats between Virginia Tech, Missouri, Texas A&M, UT Austin, and Baylor I would like that as well. I don’t have an official offer at Baylor but I am assuming I will get in (my visit went well and I think I will get in), and that my Virginia Tech unofficial acceptance with funding will be finalized. I am visiting all of them and will seek guidances from professors at my institution but I wanted more opinions.
  8. I was accepted to U of Missouri this morning with funding. I guess first round admissions weren't reported in the past for Missouri and Kansas State or they finished weeks early.
  9. Personally I would go for fit. Pick the department that is best for you both research wise and in general. I don’t think you could go wrong either way. I am kinda in the same boat with UT/A&M so it definitely is difficult to choose between multiple great programs. I might end up rolling a die or something. If I don’t like the result then I will then know I really liked the other program better.
  10. When I put I through google translate I kept seeing “no prize” is that mean unfunded or a rejection or something? The rest of it translated pretty well.
  11. I also think I aimed too low as well. I wish I would have had a more top heavy instead of bottom heavy list. I wasn’t willing to take the risks of a top heavy list so I decided to be safe in my application list (goal of 3-5 funded offers). I regret my decision though a little bit.
  12. Copy this. We need more details to make a better recommendation.
  13. I feel like Columbia is going to come at the very end of February. The PhD data is pretty limited it is hard to tell. @NumStats hopefully you will have good news soon. It seems like things are at least slightly behind in general.
  14. I got an email this morning from the DGS at Virginia Tech. They want to set up a call soon. Not sure what it means but I am a "great fit" and they "liked my application". I hope it means I am in the running for their fellowship. I am doing a lot better than I expected.
  15. Anyone else apply to University of Missouri at Columbia for any program? I got an email saying apartment applications were open but I don't know if it means anything or they sent them out to accepted students (who may not have been notified). Things like this have happened before so I wanted to check.
  16. If you really want to now soon call or email the department to confirm that they have sent out all acceptances. It's still possible to get one later on. It seems early to make a final decision. I don't know what the timeframe is in your field or for your applications but I wouldn't personally assume rejections and fully commit somewhere else just yet. Could you wait a week or so? If you are going to visit some programs you might get notifications between now and your visits.
  17. I was expecting way more activity this week. Not just with my applications but in general. Maybe next week will be more active. Still waiting on six programs (Baylor, Missouri, Virginia Tech, Columbia, Florida State, Duke).
  18. On Tuesday I received an acceptance letter from one of my programs through their online portal. It was an official acceptance but it didn't mention funding. I haven't heard anything from the department except a request for a new transcript because there was an issue with the file. My other two acceptances have come with a notice that I had been recommended for admission and that I would receive funding. Later I got the official formal acceptance in those cases. I am thinking about reaching out to the department and seeing if funding decisions have been made and if I can visit. The acceptance came three weeks earlier than the first acceptance on results in previous years (which I know has questionable meaning due to nonresponse bias) which seems weird to me. Should I contact them? If they aren't going to fund me or pay for a visit than I want to withdraw since they are more of a safety school and I have other funded acceptances with funded visits at two programs I like more (and 6 more responses to go). I am not ready to rule them out yet if they do fund me and pay for a visit, but I want to know what is happening. It is possible that I would attend the program under the right circumstanes, but only if I get a comparable offer and like it after the visit Any thoughts on what I should do? Is it too early to starting asking about funding?
  19. My understanding is they have two admissions committees (or evaluate the MA and PhD applicants at the same time) but I may be wrong. In the past MA acceptances were occasionally reported before PhD. Strangely there is very little data on Columbia’s PhD program admissions which is weird because they say they get hundreds of applicants. My estimate on a decision is the last two weeks for February. I don’t know though because I heard from Kansas State way quicker than I expected. It’s very possible that someone could have gotten accepted but it wasn’t supported. I am not expecting to get in anyway so I am not as anxious.
  20. Are you taking Columbia stats PhD or some other program. I don’t see anything on results.
  21. I agree. One of the factors I am considering in my decisions is do I think I will complete or will I possibly not be able to handle it. I would rather go to a program that may not be the best ranked but is the best for me. As long as they have decent academic job placements, good funding, and are a good research fit I could care less if they are #1 or #75 (there aren’t a lot of stats programs). If I get in to it I might choose a program that I love but isn’t the best ranked program.
  22. 1. Yes, the top 15% are interviewed. My shortlist email said this. That should cover the entire waitlist plus a few possible rejections on the shortlist 2. They do accept international students quite frequently actually based on their statistics and CVs of current students. Most of the probably have a US degree though. I think it is just nonresponse bias. It was a web interview so It would be easy to interview international students as well. Being a domestic student or having a US degree is definitely a strong advantage.
  23. So over two weeks ago I got a interview request for one of my programs. I was so excited and I thought the interview went good. I thought my interviewer said that they were trying to notify by last Friday. There are currently 5 acceptances reports and usually there are 12-15 spots. I am stuck in limbo right now waiting to know my result. Rejections and waitlists decisions (and maybe a few more acceptances) should come out soon. I didn’t think I would even make the shortlist and if I am rejected I would have preferred not to have the hope for three weeks that I might get into a top 10 program (with approximately 50% odds). I am a statistician and my brain knew that making the shortlist did not mean I was going to get in but my heart hoped. I did get into a Top 20 program with funding so it could be worse but I miss the dream I had of going to the best program in my subfield.
  24. Agreed. I haven’t heard so I am assuming a rejection or waitlist at this point. That’s rational right? There are five posted and I think they notified them last night.
  25. Not a writer but I have been doubting myself since before I even submitted my applications. A part of me felt like I was going to be rejected everywhere. I have three acceptances now (two funded, the other hasn’t made funding decisions), and now that I am facing a probable rejection within a couple of days I am doubting myself even more. I think it is common. This is so stressful and I hate it. I can’t imagine how difficult it will be when I apply for faculty jobs if I graduate. I have a website blocking service that disables gradcafe and my admissions email for most of the day so I can accomplish something.
