That makes sense! This number is probably referring to either the number of direct applicants (as you suggested) or the number of people being forwarded from the specific selection committee I applied to.

Does anyone know how many people will get it this year? I also read in my letter that a max. of 236 out of 521 could be forwarded to the national competition. When I looked at statistics from the last two years 430 people were given the award per year. Either they have severely reduced the number of awards they are giving this year, or I am misinterpreting something.

Direct applicant in California - also just got a letter yesterday that I was forwarded to the national competition! Fingers crossed.

Would anyone mind sharing how they phrased this type of email to an institution? I'm nervous about it!

I'm considering a very similar offer from Stanford. On craigslist, most apartments seem to be at least $3000/month. On-campus housing is ~$1800 for a 1 bedroom and since I would be moving with my husband we would need a 1 bedroom. The on-campus housing is a lottery and is said to be 10-40% cheaper than off-campus. Do you guys think its possible to find a place to rent for less than $1800/month? We are coming from abroad and would have visas. My husband's work situation wouldn't be very stable.

Hey guys, just adding to info regarding decisions + timelines. I applied to GSE with GRE scores 161 verbal, 160 quant, 5.5 AWA. On Feb 3rd my potential advisor told me I was on the shortlist, and received official news that I got in Feb 14. Now I'll see if I can actually afford it....
