I second this. I may try to talk shop via email either before or after the visit with future profs (My normal thought process speed is "medium" and when I'm nervous I just buffer" so emails help me out a lot anyway) and leave the trip to friendly chat. Obviously, shop talk will occur but I think it is important to note if you are asked personal Qs and if you leave with a sense of who your dept is as people as well as scholars.

This was such a roller coaster, omg I feel like I should text my mom. (1) Thanks for letting us live through you and (2) HOLY SHIT CONGRATULATIONS!!!! -
They did - I just didn't catch the two acceptances in between the wait lists because relying on my peripheral vision to capture the word "wait list," which I then glommed onto before fully catapulting myself into a parallel dimension in which I alone can Sixth-Sense the notification dates, is more entertaining than actually, you know, reading the results one-by-one.

I will be squinting in Pitt's direction tomorrow - this evening I'm going to be shaking my head at Delaware because, hello it is Feb 2 - and I've developed a new theory based on my feelings and a free online tarot card reading that Maryland, having notified its short wait list people, will be sending out its acceptances this week. An early Michigan would be a blessing because then I can stop living in the style of "will my husband ever return home from sea" and move forward in one of two positive directions.

Scene: a dark room. A single cough is heard. A beer bottle cap clinks to the floor. "... did .... did you ever know that YOU'RE MY DREAM SCHOOOOL! AND EVERYTHING I WOULD LIKE TO FUUUUUUND I CAN READ FASTER THAN A CHEEEETAAAAH WITH YOU TO HELP MAKE MY BOOK-THOUGHTS FUUUUN(DABLE)" audio file attachment it is, then. -

Option 1: have one beer and keep the ringer on. Option 2: have all the beers, keep the ringer on, and prepare to offer up my rendition "Wind Beneath My Wings" should they call. -

Thanks @Warelin! This is a great resource! -
Hey! Your thesis sounds SO COOL! As does your current work on identity formation! I did my BA thesis on memory and trauma in Faulkner and Joyce (would 11/10 love to hear your thoughts on soap because that is a fantastic and hilarious approach) and brought that into MA work on diasporic Caribbean/Caribbean-American narratives of identity & memory. Re: dystopic spec-fic - Nalo Hopkinson is a Caribbean author who has a book, Midnight Robber, that is a dystopic spec-fic/sci-fi take on Caribbean history. It's outside of your field but it's a super fun read and - if you have a moment - may be something cool to check out for fun (?) I, too, nerd out about fantasy and world-building - feel free to PM, lol, if you want to swap favorite texts/approaches (there is some narrative theory stuff on world-building that you probably already about but, if not, it's cool!)

You're right @turtleducks about the test location - I did the GRE both outside of Philly and in Richmond - the Philly one was scary. Richmond one was playing Katy Perry and had candies. Total opposites. And no problem! I'm still trying to suss out how the GRE works since my scores are not fantastic (165/144/4.0 & 163/144/5.0 - future applicants, you can SEND TWO SCORES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE TO MOST SCHOOLS!) and the test is totally a ripoff (fun fact, my one math score was me hitting "C" each time and one was me trying to do the math) but it definitely has weight within whatever holistic approach is used. Dude - I don't even know what to say to that sh*t. It's like ... REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Who would (even anonymously) make any statement like that! Why. Please, leave. Go elsewhere.

First name to pop into my mind is Cathy Caruth at Cornell. You may also want to look into Carnegie Mellon's LCS PhD and the University of Buffalo's English PhD (I have done work in trauma studies and am looking at both Buffalo and CMU) - there are other programs, I'm sure, that are great but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I had a peer go to Boston College and she was very interested in children's studies but I don't know too much about their program or what they do theory-wise.

No problem - hopefully it helps! My $.02 - if the dept says on the website that they fully fund all students and all you have right now is a congratulatory "you're in!," I'd guess that they're going to give you more info soon(ish) - if that next contact doesn't explain things fully, you can definitely ask more Qs. -

Nope! CMU was like "it's in the letter which is forthcoming." Temple's dept has yet to email me directly (I was accepted by the grad school) but a friend who is there now said it took them about a week to email him with funding/other info (and judging by the GC boards that seems par for the course.) Buffalo's grad school emailed me at like 5:00 pm yesterday, so I figure it may be a day or two until I hear from the dept specifically with visiting/funding info. I'm fascinated to say the least -

You're welcome! I was under the impression that all schools sent funding/visit/official stuff RIGHT AWAY but that's not the case for the ones I've heard from. Which makes a ton of sense but also caused me to fret a good amount until enough peers/friends were like "caaaalm down." -

I got a call on 1/24 - I received an email two days (1/29) ago saying they're hoping to send the official letter out by the end of this week. I totally feel you on the WAIT WAS THIS A MISTAKE angst but I think it just takes time (probably more time than we'd assume and definitely time that feels endless) -
