Well, many people actually confuse chemists (pharmacists) with laboratory chemists. Thankfully, I've left that behind...

Hang on in there, and hope for the best, peppermint.beatnik!

I agree with digits2006 that you should give the school a call about the status, considering the note was dated in Feb. What was the delay in the delivery of the note!?! If they still lack the references, then you could get your LOR-writers to email them immediately.

Don't worry too much about it. You have been admitted to the school, and it is alright to "shop around" for a potential supervisor, although you should have already done your homework to see who researches in topics you are interested in. All the best on landing an RA-ship then!

Well, the most important question is whether you are really interested in an academic career, or one in industry. That is a question that you can only answer, and a very important one to boot. Made a mistake in my youth, in my desperation to get funding, and am now paying dearly for it. All the best on reaching a decision!

Well, if it was your SOP, then you can only blame yourself for writing it. However, do consider that you may not enjoy the program if you really have a poorer fit at schools. Having to force-fit research to something someone in the school is interested in doing is not much fun, and trust me, a PhD is frustrating enough without that!

Having a potential supervisor on sabbatical on the first year is tricky, but I hope that everything will come through for you, jeanne! All the best!

They really do keep track of how many times you check your application!!

I would even be happy if they told us their track record on offers. eg. We tend to send out offers by the end of March At least it would give us an indication, and we needn't fret in February! -

joro, I think most of us would be calmer with checking the status of applications if we knew the actual progress of applications in the system. Perhaps the schools should indicate this, but I doubt they are bothered enough. -

Well, you could try to do it right the next time... Most schools look for focus in the SOPs, and then consider fit. Unfortunately, age also comes into play, since most academics do their most impactful work before 40. So consider all these things when you write your SOP, if you are going to try again (but you got an offer from Howard, right?).

Isn't this the case for any sell-side/buy-side analysis?
