  1. Um, steer clear from department drama. From what I've seen from others mistakes: don't sleep around with other students in your department. It gets messy. I swear, there has been more drama in my department this first year then all of my undergrad years. Make friends with the secretaries- be NICE. They're usually the ones that make sure you get into the necessary classes, research materials, and departmental paperwork done on time. (Also, never refer to them as "secretaries"- you should know their names anyway). Also, it doesn't hurt to be friendly with the janitors too. Also, figure out which faculty are the big kahunas and always mind your P's and Q's around them.
  2. My PI's last day was last week, and well, it's been a really weird 2nd semester, and it's got me thinking- how common is it for faculty to leave their positions? Anyone else have this happen? In my case, my advisor flat out quit and left for a position in industry. I have another friend at a different U had their prof leave for another U, and made no provisions for them to follow to the new school, thus, leaving my friend in a difficult position. Anyone else have similar stories? Did it turn out well in the end? and what would YOU do if your advisor only gave you a few months notice?
  3. So, my PI formally quit now. That complicates things a bit..

  4. I think one student in my dept heard back from a K1. Not sure though. I'm also waiting to hear back on my K1 too.
  5. I'm fairly certain you can't accept both the Star and GRFP. I vaguely remember some paragraph at the end of the NSF application mentioning it.
  6. I swear, my PhD must be in procrastination....

  7. For cheap housing, check out the dorms! Just because you haven't formally started grad school doesn't mean you shouldn't attend ESA. You really don't get a better chance to network like you do at ESA. It wouldn't hurt asking your advisor to go either (and apply for the ESA student section travel grants too). As young graduate students, I think the more conferences (in particular the big ones), the better we get to know our research field. I've learned quite a bit from attending ESA these past two years and have met some amazing people in the process. If you have the chance to go, do it. P.S. I had friends work the conference to get the registration fee waived- they seemed to have enjoyed it. Also... I know there is a huge contingent from UMich that attends (former grad students + current).
  8. I'm currently in LBK for grad school. I'm not a fan of this city- totally different from where I grew up and went to undergrad in the northeast. It is in the middle of nowhere, but, it is the somewhere in nowhere. Some perks: Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Palo Duro, Big Bend National park, Austin, and Dallas are all in reasonable (read: day trip) driving distance. Downtown has some events- theater, monthly art walk, a smallish music scene, and lots of cheap margaritas. Cost of living here is really low, however, don't count on travelling by bicycle unless you live very close to campus (lack of bike lanes and terrible drivers= terrifying). Plus, today, there was a horrific bike vs. pickup accident.... OH, and get used to breathing and chewing on dust. It's WINDY here (a good day is when its 15mph). There are dust storms AND mudrain (so be prepared).
  9. I'm fairly certain most of us don't have stipends of $30k+ (I have less then half that, which is actually high for my department and university). Seems rather pretentious to complain about being unable to double dip. Besides, if you're going into science (read: non-industry), clearly, your paycheck shouldn't be your #1 incentive (IMHO).
  10. 2 interviews! YESS!

  11. 1-let classes absorb my life 2-work extra at the stable (riding, grooming, lunging etc) 3- beer 4- exercising like a madwoman 5- play with my pets 6- sleep 7- stupid websites (Note this is also helping me get over the wait for 3 schools + the fact that my boyfriend dumped me last week. Yeeehaaw!)
  12. still nothing from 3 schools, rejected from 5. On top of that, my boyfriend of 2+ years dumped me. FML.
  13. I'm still waiting on three schools. I've heard back from one a few weeks ago (waitlisted). But the other 2 have not responded to my (one each) emails a month/month and a half ago. Pretty much worried sick at this point.
