it presumably works differently for direct applicants though.  And last year people were told on their letter on SSHRC extranet if they were waitlisted.  As I say though, I'm just grasping at straws, don't listen to me!

arrghh you are probably right and I shouldn't' stay hopeful only to be disappointed again. I'm going to stay away from GradCafe now. Congrats to everyone who won!

I was waitlisted before for the CGS-M, it came from my department, not SSHRC. Although I don't know if that has changed since then..

if there was nothing on your letter, it makes sense to assume it's the same this year then. & it probably really sucks to be waitlisted for CGS and not get it, or did you end up getting it? just trying to see if there is still hope LOL

That's kind of my point.  Has anyone been told they are on the waitlist?  Or is there not one this year (as far as applicants know?)  Look, I'm just grasping at straw here ?

ohh, so you're trying to figure out the same thing hahaha it definitely doesn't hurt to be hopeful ?

in previous years you were told if you were on a waitlist.  So I assumed when I got my "regret to inform you" that that was it.  But if nobody has been told they are waitlisted, then maybe there is a list of "meritorious alternate applicants" (from 'Selection Procedures') who will be contacted if anyone turns down their award (as a few people inevitably do).

So if it doesn't explicitly say that you are in the "meritorious alternate applicants" list, then you are not in the waitlist, right? or there is no way to know?

Accepted in committee 3 (demography) with a score of 17.74 - good news after hearing that I was waitlisted for OGS!

For those who received extranet emails already: Did the come from the same fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca address as the last "SSHRC Doctoral Awards Results" heart-attack email in early April? Thanks so much!

it was called "Competition Results -Doctoral Awards (my application number)

Did you apply to this year's FRQSC competition? I'm still waiting on a response.

No, I got FRQSC in the last year's competition. I got my results on April 30th 11.59pm or something like that. I remember, I was so anxious to find out and I was waiting up. Best of luck for you with FRQSC!

With SSHRC, I got such a low rating this year too even though I worked more on my application and felt so much better about it. It just shows how subjective these things are and very dependent on who reads your application.

Generic said this was done in error, there's no logic to that. :) I've read on a few posts that the depts typically find out before we get access via email. We have no control over this process, so stressing out isn't really helping or changing anything. I'm working on my Plan B (other scholarship apps) in the meantime.

You are right that stressing about it won't really help anything and that we don't have any control over the whole process but I honestly I can't help it :( I will try to to do other things to keep my mind off of this but it's going to be so HARD.

My advisor accidentally let it slip and then retracted it -- which is a mindfuck of its own. But for the sake of my sanity, I am going to stick with it wasn't a mistake in what she said but that she said it. But yeah, they aren't supposed to tell us but they have it, 99.9% sure.

I don't understand the logic in this. Why would SSHRC notify graduate studies or departments beforehand (April 30th) but now allow them to tell us? Ughhh. Does anyone have any theories about this? Could it be that, they let them know, in case for administrative reasons, we can't get our results on time and THEN they can tell us??

This week is going to be literally the longest week of my entire life!!! How do you all pass the time, I can't focus on any actual work, even-though there is a ton to do of course!!

SSHRC storytellers was released this week, and SSHRC post-doc was recently released, I think. PhD SSHRC has not been released, yet.

Pfewww. That makes sense. Of course there are multiple SSHRC awards that people are hearing about. At this stage my brain has frozen and can't make logical observations LOL. I just NEED April to be over already LMAO in tears & misery.

So I was reading some other SSHRC related threads and apparently some people have started to hear back?? Does anyone know if this is accurate? I remember people receiving feedback at different times last year, so I really have no idea when I'm going to hear back.

What do you mean "hear back"? like an update on their application? or are you referring to the "heart attack" emails we've got and will be getting on instructions about how to check for the results.

if some people are hearing already and the rest of us have to wait, that seems super unfair... but I highly doubt this is happening!?

My understanding is that SSHRC announce the results (win or not win) to your institution (for example McGill), your institution passes that information to your department.

That's good to know & I'm in McGill so I will find out through my department even if SSHRC is late with results. Thanks.

Last year was very funny, which I think this year it should be fixed:
    (1) People received the extranet email notifications on different days

    (2) I was one of the last ones who received that email
    (3) But i tried to log in before receiving and worked for a day, but there was no result in there
    (4) Then they started uploading the results on the extranet batches by batches
    (5) Again I was one of the last ones, so I lost my patience and contacted the graduate office of awards and stuff
    (6) Conclusion, we dont know what is going to happen. One thing is for certain your office of awards thing at your institution knows the results before you get them. Also, in many cases your department (e.g department of psych of econ or whatever) knows the result before you do.

This is very helpful information, in case the same thing happens. I hope it doesn't though. It's my 1st time applying, so I have no idea what to expect. If I don't hear from SSHRC and don't get the extranet email or the letter, should I just contact my department to find out about the my results? Also would they have the results for everyone or just the ones that were successful, do you know?

I am just wondering, for those who also got the email earlier this month, were your names highlighted in green or some other colour?

Mine was green too. I don't think it means anything. or could it? lol we are reading into this way too much hahaha overanalyzing everything. This is so totally normal tho :P

My brain is playing tricks on me:D
My brain is telling me that there is a uniform distribution of getting the news from today to the end of April. So I refresh my email every hour.
But, the reality is they are going to send us the results on April 30th,11:59.
Or send us an email on April 30, 11:59 with: "sorry, Covid happened as you know, how about early May?"

let's REALLY hope that doesn't happen. I read in previous year's forum that people had to wait well into May to find out about their results and I think that's just CRUEL. We're already waiting for MONTHS! We shouldn't have to wait any longer. Let's all be positive and hope we will ALL hear about our results by April 30, by 11:59 :) or latest May 1st. Fingers crossed for good news.

Mine was in green! Got any theories?

Even though my sister told me a thousand times not to do this, I'm still going back and reading my research proposal. Don't try this at home kids!

OMG, I do this too! Your sister is probably right. It's not like we could do anything about it at this point. Sometimes I feel good about it after I read it but often I find things that could be better in it, I guess it depends on my mood.

But honestly there is so many ways that the proposal could be different/better/whatever and at the end of the day, I feel like there is an element of luck involved in that it heavily depends on firstly who are the people who read your proposal and how they feel about it and secondly how you compare to the rest of the applicants in that subject. So we can never know until the results are out. I know of people who've won CGS & Vanier (which is the most competitive of them all) but were rejected from FRQSC (which is a Quebec based scholarship) and is supposed to be much less competitive than CGS and Vanier since those are federal AND applicants have to go through multiple rounds before they will be considered. There really isn't a logic....

Ugh...I just want this month to be over already. I want to wake up and the date to be April 30th. Fairy god mother, can you hear me?

Thanks for starting this topic, @Farhsa8! I applied directly to SSHRC as I am at a UK university, in my second year of the PhD.

I didn't apply last year, which was my first year of the program, as I just didn't have time. However, I did apply the year before (unsuccessfully) as a direct applicant, @seeveeargh -- like you I was not yet enrolled and had to list institutions where I thought I would end up studying (I ended up somewhere else).  I second what others say - if your SSHRC app is successful, it bodes well for a place at your chosen program.

My question for everyone -- I recall getting a 'pre-selection' letter in the mail in Feb 2019 telling me that my application was being forwarded to the next stage of assessment. Haven't gotten one of those this time round, just an email last fall saying my application had been received. Anyone else get one of those 'pre-selection letters' this time?

I honestly don't know how it works if you're a direct application to SSHRC. I've always applied through the institutions since I'm at a Canadian University and they have two rounds (one department, one university) before getting forwarded to SSHRC. When mine got forwarded I got a letter from the graduate studies studies saying my application got forwarded but I haven't gotten anything from SSHRC ever since I applied, other than the generic "we've received your application" email which is the same one as yours....
