Just a heads-up, UC-Denver just changed one of their essay requirements today.  Earlier this afternoon the description under the past work tab was "Describe your professional and academic laboratory and/or research experiences from start of undergraduate work to present."  I was about to upload my finished application when I noticed that the description was changed to "Describe your preparation and experience relevant to your proposed graduate field of genetic counseling.  Please include course and non-course educational experiences, volunteer/advocacy and counseling experiences, teaching, laboratory or clinical research experience (including capstone, thesis, publications), and other relevant employment, scholarly or career exploration activities."

For most people the application is due on January 1st, so it might not affect people.  I'm an international applicant, so the material is due December 1st.  I've just e-mailed them asking if they're giving any lee-way to the deadline considering this change was made 2 days before it was due.

No!!!! I have already submitted my application. This is so frustrating.

Has anyone else applying to Stanford noticed they changed their personal statement restrictions from 500-750 words to 2 pages, double spaced? If so, how are you all navigating this? I wrote my statement following the original limitations so now I'm a bit worried...

I am having the same issues. I was about to submit my essay and noticed it too :(

People applying to Stanford- in the academic interests and specialization section of the application (page 6) are you leaving it blank? I am fairly positive that the program does not offer Academic Interest choices, and the only thing I can think of to put would be pediatric, prenatal, cancer etc. I think it should just be left blank, but I wanted to check and see what other people are doing.

I am going to leave it blank. I assumed the section is meant for PhD or other grad students.

  4. Hi! I am looking for advice on improving my application. I am first time applicant. I would love any feedback you guys have :)

I am junior majoring in molecular biology.

    GPA: 3.80

Extracurriculars: Involved in plant genetics research, volunteer at a homeless shelter (7 months so far), disability center (a month so far) and crisis helpline (a month so far). Hopefully volunteer at hospital this summer.

Shadowing: I have shadowed one GC for a day. I have interviewed three other GCs. I plan to do more shadowing during summer as well.

I haven't taken GRE yet. I still need to take a psych and a statistics course. Please let me know if there is some way I can improve my application until December!

The website is launched and they explain things really clearly. I think we're all nervous due to the fact that we get one answer without any flexibility... I think it's sort of fear of the unknown. Thinking about it, it's true, there are the same amount of slots available for the same amount of applicants. It all just seems very final and I think that's what's causing the nerves.

Reading through the website really helped, but it still makes me nervous that I wouldn't be the one directly making decision of choosing the program. I am glad though that this will reduce stress and waitlist game!

    Hey everyone,

So I was a second time applicant this past cycle: I applied to 9 schools, interviewed at 5, and was waitlisted at 3 but still didn't get a spot so naturally I'm feeling a bit frustrated about having to be a third time applicant :/

I felt like my GRE/GPA was fine as no schools seemed to say anything about it this cycle and I had followed up with programs last year and tried to do everything that they asked me to. The only thing that I felt like I was liking was long-term shadowing experience/a GC assistant position. I'm just not really sure what they're looking for since I tried to improve on everything that I was told to :(

I am really sorry! That sounds very frustrating. Seems like you are well qualified since you got waitlisted at three places. I heard that sometimes it is not about how qualified you are, but about how well your personality will fit in other students in that particular program. Hopefully new match system will be good for you!

  7. @NHxx  Congratulations! Can you tell me more about how you decided which colleges to apply? Also, is it important to be able to speak Spanish for Californian programs? I am just beginning to decide on colleges, so I have a lot of questions. How did you gather information about specifics of each program?  Thank you :)

Hey all! I am an applicant from India and I'm so glad that you've started this forum. Well, I had applied last year and interviewed with USF but unfortunately got waitlisted. So this time I'm planning to prepare early on and it would be really helpful to get a perspective from my fellow GC applicants!

@mithila.belekar Hi! I am originally from India as well. Good luck for this admission cycle :)
