Quick question - I have a paper that I submitted to a journal and it is currently under consideration. Should I put the name of the journal on the CV or just put "Submitted and under consideration?"

That's good to know. The information was relayed to me by a professor from another department, so that was why I wanted to find placement results to make sure.

Haven't considered looking at dissertations. I went ahead and looked at a couple and so far it seems promising. One of the professor's recent graduates is now on a tenured position at CalTech. I think both objectives are important to me. I believe this person can really benefit my research, but at the same time I do want to get an academic job.

Thanks for the advice! Any idea on what I should write in the e-mail to the Director of Graduate Studies? I found the information for some of the programs on the department website, but many has not posted it. I'm just kind of worried because I was told by another professor that one of the professors whom I am really interested in working with has placed no students in academic positions in the past ten years...

Well, that's certainly good to hear. But UCLA is not my top choice. I think for my research interests, the East Coast is a better option.

This is more of a personal decision as I have heard some negative things about his character that makes me question whether or not I want to study with him.

Maybe if there is less competition the chance of acceptance is higher?

Thank you for your answer! I don't really want to retake it either, but I was just worried that such a huge gap between verbal and quant might look bad. I think I'll use my time to work on aspects of my application instead (unless I do really bad on my essay).

Would a significant gap between Verbal and Quant score look bad to admissions? My Verbal is 161 but my Quant is only 148. I'm wondering if I should retake the exam.

If a language is required for your PhD program, your school will likely offer it to you. One of my friends went to a PhD program for Chinese history and it required Japanese. Since he didn't know any Japanese, the school made him take it over the summer. I'm about to apply for Fall 2018 and my Japanese is basically zero so I'm self-studying. I'm hoping to take the N4 or N3 if possible this winter, so I can at least show them I have a basic foundation and then take more advanced classes to build on that.

Wow, thanks for all the recommendations! Yes I realize medieval is more of a European history characterization, so Mid-Imperial is correct. I'm studying the Song-Yuan-Ming transition, maybe more political/fiscal than political/economic. For Harvard, Szonyi seems to be doing late Imperial and Modern. I was thinking of applying to Peter Bol, who is actually the adviser of my adviser here in Hong Kong. Yes, Chicago is probably going to be dropped from my list, unless Pomeranz is willing to take students who do Mid-Imperial history. Christopher Atwood and Christian de Pee are definitely both on my list.Mark Edward Lewis (he might be too early yes) and von Glahn I am not sure right now, I would have to discuss it with my advisers first. I know von Glahn studies this period but I'm very disinclined to apply to him. I'm considering R. Bin Wong instead. It's a shame Nicola di Cosmo isn't taking any students. My adviser highly recommends him.
