  1. @Kongyiji Not a poet by any means but it's a beautiful verse! Well done. Btw feel free to PM me if you have already questions about Berkeley or living in the Bay Area. Never went there myself but I live quite close to Berkeley.
  2. It could possibly be a rejection, or it might mean you've been placed on an internal waitlist.
  3. The President's Day Massacre? Ah well, Columbia wasn't that good of a fit for me anyways. I feel like I applied to Columbia just for the sake of applying.
  4. 8 years for a history PhD is not too far off from the average. IIRC the AHA said it takes 7-8 years for the average PhD student to finish.
  5. You can live on $20,000, but it means you will be living with roommates and not anywhere near Westwood. When I was still an undergrad there back in 2015, rent for a 2b2b apartment within walking distance to campus was ~$3,600/month and I'm sure it hasn't gone down since then. It will become cheaper the farther away you move from campus, but you will still require a roommate. How many roommates depends on how much you're willing to pay. I've seen rent as low as $600-$800 a month if you're willing to live with a roommate in a shared room. Also, UCLA has its own grad housing you can apply for. The ones near campus are absurdly expensive, but the apartments away from campus are much cheaper. And buy a car. If you want to do anything or go anywhere in LA, you will need a car. Factor in car maintenance, insurance, and gas costs too. All in all, I think it's all down to how much you're going to spend on housing. $20,000 is enough for LA if you're not paying a lot for rent.
  6. Buy a car, buy a car, buy a car. There is a reason why LA is called the car capital of the US. The metropolitan area is incredibly spread out and public transportation is not the best at the moment. If you want to go places and do things, it's better to have a car. Plus you would be able to look for housing in safer and/or cheaper areas a bit farther away from campus.
  7. Yes. If you do a East Asian PhD, you will have to explain your sub-field and focus and justify why you did East Asian as opposed to History. Harvard. I'm not sure about the situation in China but Hong Kong definitely prefers top US graduates. Lingnan's department head is a Harvard graduate and HKUST has a Harvard graduate assistant professor. If you're from a top 10 program and have an excellent publication record, getting a job in Hong Kong is not too difficult.
  8. @there_is_a_wait_so_long UCLA and USC.
  9. I prefer the general environment of Irvine over USC, yes.
  10. For what field? I personally enjoy Irvine's campus a lot more. Irvine is a nice city, pretty far away from the downtown LA pollution, has great food, and is very safe. USC's neighborhood is notorious for crime so that's something to keep in mind. But as a private school, USC has more money. Irvine has no one I'd like to work with.
  11. Hello! Anyone considering or have already decided to attend UCLA, USC, or any of the other LA area schools? I got a really good offer from UCLA for Chinese history and I'm heavily leaning towards attending. Would love to hear from you guys!
  12. @fortsibut It works now, thanks!
  13. I think you have to open this link, then open with Google Sheets, and then share the Sheets link here so others can go in and add stuff. Because this link is to an uploaded Excel sheet, any updates you make will only be viewable to yourself.
  14. It's 10PM here, so almost time for bed. I wonder if there will be anything unpleasant after I wake up.
  15. And I was one of the casualties, haha. At least I can say it was a good thing the rejection came today instead of on Chinese New Years. I always felt like Harvard was a long shot, but it was worth a try anyways.
  16. @winterlover What school is this? Seems to be that the department has decided to admit you, but the decision still has to be approved by the school.
  17. Congrats on the Harvard admit! Any day now for Princeton, but honestly, for a school that has a December 1 deadline and did their interviews so early, Princeton is so slow with decisions...
  18. @Kongyiji Was told during interview that Princeton EAS typically sends out decisions in mid-February, which would be next week.
  19. @CBC Nothing from Harvard. I applied to EAS for Princeton and was told during interviews that decisions typically come out in mid-Feb., which would be next week.
  20. A reputable, refereed journal. My advisor made it a point that I should only publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  21. @pepe.s As someone currently in Hong Kong, I can definitely relate haha. It's even worse for the West Coast, due to the horrendous 16 hour time difference.
  22. @BuckinghamRabbit I wish I was, but sadly I am also waiting.
  23. @Anon1818 Sent you a permission request, see if you can approve it?
  24. Apparently, Berkeley's results are already out. Anyone hear anything?
