What is everyone using for their writing sample? I am applying to a mixture of rhet/comp MAs and general English MAs; I'm leaning towards using an 11 page literary analysis of three different interpretations of The Turn of the Screw, and possibly adding a shorter rhetorical analysis to the rhet programs. Would anyone be interested in an exchange?

Oh, forgot to add that right now, the unofficial 'official' list stands as: Utah, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech.

Thank you! It's a coming-of-age novel set in the 1850s about a girl growing into womanhood and moving west with her family. I just checked their website, and didn't see much in the way of financial aid which is definitely more of a must have than a what. However, if you happen to be aware if they do actually have good financial aid, would love a PM.

My publications aren't actually scholarly -- one fiction excerpt from my novel, and one shorter piece of creative non-fiction -- but I have hopes they will still strengthen my applications. I'm applying to MA programs only, both general English (most with the option to claim an emphasis/concentration) and some that specifically rhet/comp. Right now on the list is Purdue, Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Utah. My requirements were good funding, not specifically lit-based (although Kentucky kind of is...), in a more rural area, and low cost of living -- so, if anyone has any last minute suggestions, I'll take them.

GRE officially DONE. One less thing to stress over. SoP polished (will still likely revise more), recently received word of another piece of my work being accepted for publication, heavily revised a potential writing sample today. Where's everyone applying?

Absolutely not. I have seen some rhet/comp programs outright state they do not consider the quant score at all.

Hello everyone, This was from a practice GRE (Princeton), but I take the real thing In a little over a week. My verbal score was subpar - 152 - yet both of my essays scored a 6 with two different commentators/graders. I'm applying for mainly rhet/comp programs and my top two say that the GRE is not considered extremely heavily, yet I still worry. Will my writing scores outweigh my mediocre verbal score, or am I seriously in trouble? I've studied a LOT, bought the Magoosh membership, etc. but I'm simply not a good test taker. I truly feel I've done all I can do. Anyone been in this situation, or can offer some insight? Thanks in advance.

I'm applying to Utah and Purdue for MA programs specifically in rhet/comp, and Kentucky, Tennessee, and Oklahoma for general English programs with the option to concentrate on rhet/comp. Purdue's program fits every single want and desire of mine, and I'm just badly hoping I'll get in despite how competitive it is.

Where is everyone applying, and to what types of programs? I'm taking the GRE the second week of November, have mentioned LORs to my profs, and have about finished up a personal statement.

I'm also having trouble narrowing down my schools. I'm applying to some rhet/comp programs as well as creative writing, and want to avoid paying thousands of dollars in app fees... But I can tell you that I will be applying to around your range of schools - maybe even more. I wouldn't worry too much about asking your profs; I'm sure they've been asked before. I'm surprised that there isn't already a 2018 MFA thread...where is everyone?

Hello everyone, I'm an undergrad senior in my final semester majoring in English with a writing concentration. I'm preparing to take the GRE and apply to grad schools for an MA in Fall 2018, but for most schools, can find little to no information about acceptance rates, average GPAs/GRE scores schools are looking for, etc. Is there anyone here who has been accepted (or rejected) to the following programs who may be able to give me some insight?
